Christmas light festival in Amsterdam debuts

Amsterdam, Netherlands --- The Amsterdam Light Festival debuted during my visit to the city popularly known for its free laws on soft drugs and sex trade.

According to city residents, winter is usually an off-peak season for tourists visiting Amsterdam. But starting this year, visitors will have a new reason to consider taking a trip to the Dutch city during the holiday season.

The Amsterdam Christmas Light Festival that began this year officially runs from December 7 to January 20, 2013. The whole city and its canals light up.

One of the features of the festival is an "Illuminade" which is a walking route thru the city to view spectacular artworks of light erected for the festival.

One of the artworks I really enjoyed watching was an illuminated egg-shaped art piece that changes colors.

A boulevard of light along Amstel area and its river was also set up for visitors to enjoy a series of enchantingly-lit buildings and structures.

Ear candy for the Yuletide season was also provided by a special Christmas carol concert starring local celebrities in the Dam Square.

The festival culminated with a Christmas canal parade that featured various boats filled with live carols, lights and special effects.

So, if your planning a trip to Amsterdam in the years to come, try to consider visiting the Dutch city on December for an illuminated experience !
