Intel to focus on 2-in-1 gadgets, tablets in 2014

MANILA, Philippines – Intel Philippines will be mainly focusing on 2-in-1 devices and tablets in 2014, its country manager Calum Chisholm said on Tuesday.

“For 2014, the two main drivers are really 2-in-1 and tablet. The 2-in-1 can also be an Ultrabook, but the main design ability is really going into a 2-in-1 type device because people are using multi-devices, they have the tablet, and a notebook as well,” he said in a press briefing.

Chisholm said Intel will also be involved in driving digital literacy and accessibility of affordable devices.

“We need to drive down accessibility of affordable devices. To do that we need to work with our multinational partners as well as local partners to bring in the Philippines about 70 percent of the market for tablets that is under $199. We need to be in that space offering good value systems,” he said.

Chisholm said while Intel “changed the PC landscape” in 2013 by improving connectivity and price points on smartphones and tablets, 2014 will be about innovation.

“Expect more designs and a refreshed line-up coming in 2014,” he said.

Intel Market Development Manager Wowie Wong, meanwhile, said now is “the pinnacle of the mobile industry for clamshells and notebooks.”

“We’re going to focus on 2-in-1s, some of which will be Ultrabooks, some will be not. It’s a new drive to see how consumers are more convenient with two devices in one,” he said.

Chisholm added that emerging technologies, such as wearable devices, will see a rapid increase in 2014.

He said Intel will be making an announcement on the development of wearable devices in the first half of 2014.
