Martinez finishes 6th at Lombardia tilt
CARSON, California – Filipino Olympian Michael Christian Martinez bucked a fall in the free skate portion of his program to finish a respectable sixth out of 13 competitors at the Lombardia Trophy in Milan, Italy.
Figure skaters from the United States finished first and fourth, while Japan took second, and Russia took third and fifth.
Martinez finished with a score of 199.92 and beat the rest of the senior men's competitors from Europe.
Martinez's friends and supporters watched the event via live stream and were relieved to see him compete again.
It was also a relief for Martinez's family to know that his financial situation has improved after SM gave him a P9-million allowance for training.
"It's getting better and better, and with his new coach, hopefully he'll be able to concentrate on his practice," said Nonie Belarmino.
Martinez's adopted family in Carson will also have more celebrations to look forward to. After next month's Grand Prix, they will celebrate the Olympian's birthday in early November.
Martinez's next competition is the Grand Prix in Chicago.
