Seagate launches world's first 8TB hard drive

MANILA - Digital storage company Seagate has recently announced that is has began shipping the world's first ever 8TB hard disk drives.

The move marks an"important step" for the company as it seeks to answer the rising demand for storage, which corresponds with the amount of data and content being created and consumed in an everyday basis.

"As our world becomes more mobile, the number of devices we use to create and consume data is driving an explosive growth in unstructured data, " said Seagate vice president of marketing Scott Horn.

"This places increased pressure on cloud builders to look for innovative ways to build cost-effective, high capacity storage for both private and cloud-based data centers."

"Seagate is poised to address this challenge by offering the world’s first 8TB HDD, a ground-breaking new solution for meeting the increased capacities needed to support the demand for high capacity storage in a world bursting with digital creation, consumption and long-term storage," he added.

The company claims that new hard disk drive, which is geared towards data centers and others as such, will also operate in a cost-efficient manner. It boasts that it can "reduce overall operating costs, helping customers economically store data."

No price has been announced as of yet, but Seagate said it will be shipping the hard drives to "select customers" in the next quarter.
