Should you upgrade to iPad Air 2, Mini 3?

MANILA - While many consider the iPad Air 2 to be the best iPad currently available in the market, a tech expert said he is reluctant to suggest an upgrade from the first version of the tablet, which was launched less than a year ago.

On an episode of ANC's "Future Perfect" that aired Wednesday, tech journalist Art Samaniego explained that Apple's current strategy is to aim for consumers who are a step behind the "early adopters."

He summed it up with a couple of words: "Revolution, then evolution."

The strategy basically means that the tech giant is merely "perfecting" what comes after a device the company bills as "revolutionary."

According to Samaniego, this will result --most of the time-- in a minimal difference between the two devices.

He, however, does not belittle the upgrades made from the first iPad Air. For one, the iPad Air 2 now boasts a better camera. It also features Touch ID, an overall faster processor, and an aluminum enclosure that is both thinner and lighter than its predecessor.

'A disappointing upgrade'

But Samaniego does not see any reason to ditch your iPad Mini 2 just yet. He said that the single addition of the Touch ID is not worth the additional $100 (around P4,500) one would be dishing out for the newer Mini 3.

"Everything is the same with [the previous model]," he said, referring to the similar specs that both devices feature.

According to Apple's website, the Mini 2 and Mini 3 both sport the same 5MP camera, the same 2048x1536 retina display, and runs on the same A7 chip with 64-bit architecture and M7 motion co-processor.
