Google provides real-time info on 'Ruby'


MANILA - Filipino netizens can now get real-time public service announcements and information regarding Typhoon Ruby (international name: Hagupit) courtesy of Google.

On Thursday, the web giant announced that its Google Public Alerts system is now live in the country. The one-stop online page grants easy access to updates from state weather bureau PAGASA, as well as other related Twitter posts from government agencies and the media.

The service, which will feature a crisis map that details information about possible evacuation centers, is automatically displayed on Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Now. Users will also be provided with recommended actions, based on their location, as well as traffic updates.

Typhoon Ruby, which has been classified as a super typhoon by the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center, is expected to make landfall over Samar area before noon Saturday. It is currently packing 195 kph winds and gusts of up to 230 kph, according to PAGASA.

Meanwhile, public storm warning signal number 1 has been raised over Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, Siargao Island, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat.

Several local government units have already declared the suspension of classes in preparation for the typhoon.
