Web stars Bogart, Erwan, Chris in rare cook-off

MANILA – Three of the country’s YouTube stars came together recently in a rare cook-off that utilizes Google’s different applications.
Erwan Heussaff, Bogart the Explorer and Chris Urbano (of “Maputing Cooking” fame) took on the role of head chefs during the Google Cook-off event at the Center for Culinary Arts campus in Quezon City.

They were assisted by sous chefs from CCA and selected members of the media, including ABS-CBNnews.com.

During the event, the three Internet stars and their respective teams were tasked to prepare a dish using a set number of ingredients which include cod, canned tomatoes, onion, soy sauce, olive oil, brown sugar and thyme.

But there was a twist – each ingredient was listed in a different language, so contestants were required to use Google Translate to figure out which items to get. Gmail – or Google Mail – was also needed to get the instructions on how to prepare the dish, as well as applications like Drive, Chrome and Voice Search.

Each of three teams managed to finish successfully, but it was Heussaff’s group that ultimately won the cook-off. This came as no surprise to the other contestants and the members of the audience, especially since Heussaff is a well-known restaurateur in the country.

Shortly after the cook-off, the three celebrities went on to share bits of advice to those who are hoping to make their mark on YouTube.

Urbano said getting someone to edit and cut videos to make them look more polished is quite handy, especially for those who are planning to use YouTube for profit.

“Get someone to do it!” he said, recalling the time when he was having difficulty creating his first few videos.

Heussaff, on the other hand, stressed the importance of finding one’s voice on the Internet, saying that a person’s videos should offer something fresh.

While he admitted that his YouTube videos are not as “viral” as those of his peers in the industry, Heussaff said his strength lies in being able to secure partnerships abroad, with more TV networks looking for unique online content.

“They want native digital content, something quick,” he said, citing the likes of channels such as National Geographic.

Bogart, for his part, emphasized that those who are planning to become an online celebrity should be passionate about his or her craft.

“Like many things, you should love what you do,” he said.
