What 'perfect' female body looks like in PH, 17 other countries

MANILA – “How do perceptions of beauty vary across the globe?” A study conducted by a UK online pharmacy attempted to answer this question by conducting an interesting study.

Titled “Perceptions of Perfection Across Borders,” the study aims to “better understand potentially unrealistic standards of beauty and to see how such pressures vary around the world.”

Superdrug’s Online Doctor tapped female graphic designers in 18 countries to edit a photo of a woman based on what they think is deemed beautiful in their own territory.

The actual instructions were as follows: “Photoshop her form. The idea is to Photoshop and retouch this woman to make her more attractive to the citizens of your country. We are looking to explore how perceptions of beauty change across the world. Multiple designers are involved. You can modify clothing, but her form must be visible. All other changes, including those to her shape and form, are up to you.”

Explaining the focus on female graphic artists, the study added: “We wanted a woman’s view of what her culture finds attractive and to understand more about the pressures they face. However, in order to get entries from more countries, we accepted contributions from four men with the caveat that they first seek input from women and base their design changes on this feedback.”

Here’s a look at the original image released by Superdrug. View the slideshow to see how it was altered by designers from the Philippines and 17 other countries to make it look like the “perfect” female form.
