Fil-Ams set up ice cream shop with Pinoy flavors

CALIFORNIA – A Filipino-American couple is hoping to bring some classic Philippine flavors to their artisan ice cream shop.

For mixologist Adrienne Nicole Borlongan, ice cream holds a special meaning for his family. Her grandfather was a chemist for Magnolia Ice Cream.

"I love ice cream! Maybe it's in my blood. I thought there were such interesting flavors. Growing up, I was disappointed they didn't have such exotic flavors at the regular grocery store," she said.

Her boyfriend, JP Lopez, is a lawyer inspired by the success of CPK, which was also founded by a lawyer.

"If I'm going to become a lawyer, I'm going to become the lawyer that leaves his practice to open up a restaurant or a business," Lopez said.

Together, they pursued their dream of having their "churn" in the growing food trend of artisanal ice cream.

The two have opened their artisanal ice cream shop Wanderlust in the valley town of Tarzana.

"It's an ice cream concept inspired by Wanderlust… wanting to travel and explore different places and cuisine and following a nonlinear path," said Borlongan.

From pinipig rice toppings, ube cones, latik, and sticky rice mango, several of the rotating flavors are Pinoy-inspired with many more in the works. But to the owners, they're more than just flavors.

"The sweet cream latik reminds me of being in Palawan and El Nido watching little kids swing across the palm trees. It reminds me of those experiences as opposed to it's the Philippines," said Lopez.

Everything is made in house and Wanderlust will do something that only few other Los Angeles ice cream shops do: pasteurize their own milk, which requires special permits.

It's a family affair, with Lopez's aunt and mom using their French pastry backgrounds on some of the other munchies, hoping to make Pinoy-inspired ice cream a year round treat in sunny southern California.
