6 things to know about Rodrigo Duterte

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte may be popular, especially with his iron-fist approach to crime, but here are some things you probably didn't know about the tough-talking, no-nonsense mayor.

- He spent seven years in high school.

It took the young Duterte seven years to finish high school after being expelled from the Ateneo de Davao due to misconduct. He was then sent by his father to a distant school in Digos City, the Holy Cross of Digos, where he eventually finished his secondary education.

- He is worth nearly P22 million.

The 70-year-old Duterte, who has been the mayor of Davao City for 7 terms, has a net worth of P21.97 million, based on his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) for 2014. His declared assets are worth P22.97 million while his liabilities are P1 million.

- He is not a fan of awards.

In April 2014, Duterte declined a nomination for the World Mayor Award, organized by the City Mayors Foundation, saying he was only doing his job. He also declined other awards for Davao City, including the anti-smoking award in Singapore in 2010 and another from the American Cancer Society.

- He has been named "The Punisher."

Duterte, who has been tagged in extrajudicial killings in his city, has been dubbed by TIME Magazine as "The Punisher" in a 2002 article. In May 2015, Duterte admitted his links to the Davao Death Squad (DDS), which is allegedly responsible for summary executions of over 1,000 criminals in the city. He, however, later backtracked on his statement, saying he was referring to the Davao Development System.

- He supports LGBT rights.

In 2009, Duterte slammed the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for rejecting the accreditation of the party-list Ang Ladlad for the 2016 polls. Ang Ladlad is a political party representing the Filipino community of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders. In 2012, Davao City also passed an ordinance banning discrimination against members of the LGBT community, minority groups, and differently-abled persons.

- He is not afraid of expressing his feelings.

Back in 1995, Duterte burned a Singaporean flag to express his outrage over the execution of OFW Flor Contemplacion in Singapore. Contemplacion was convicted of the murder of another Filipino domestic worker and a Singaporean child.
