What to expect at Click Play social media fest

MANILA -- Thanks to his role as as Minho in the "Maze Runner" dystopian film franchise, Korean-American actor Ki Hong Lee is now a bona fide movie star.

Despite this, Lee has not forgotten his roots as a social media sensation as he joins other world-famous YouTubers and Viners in the Philippines for the first-ever Click Play: The Social Media Festival, happening on November 22 at the SMX Convention Center at the SM Mall of Asia Complex.

Lee achieved YouTube fame as a recurring actor in various Wong Fu Production short films like “Take it Slow” and “She Has a Boyfriend.” After "Maze Runner," he landed a role on the sitcom "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," which was created and written by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.

Asked about working in big-budget productions, Lee said, "I think the only notable difference is comfort."

"You get to have a trailer and they make you feel comfortable while you’re shooting on location," he told ABS-CBNnews.com ahead of this weekend's festival. The work is the same – which is great. I get to do what I love – which is to act."

Meanwhile, Lee played down his comedy skills, giving the credit instead of the "talented comedic writers."

"Comedy is great because it’s just so much fun to do. I’ve been very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such talented comedic writers. They are the real funny ones – I just try to be truthful in whatever comedy they write," he said.

Teen choice winners

Apart from Lee, Click Play will also feature Cimorelli, the family act who won the Teen Choice Award for Web Star in 2013.

With a fan base of 3 million on YouTube, the Cimorelli sisters will be visiting the Philippines for the first time and are expected to regale the Click Play crowd with songs from their "Renegade" EP, and perhaps some from their "Christmas Magic" EP, or tracks from their mixtape of original acoustic songs.

In an interview with ABS-CBNnews.com, Katherine Cimorelli said they started in 2007.

"We originally played as a full band with electric guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. Then in 2009 I had the idea to put up our first cover. It wasn't that common on YouTube at the time to do covers, and we had found a leaked video of Miley's performance of 'Party In The USA' at the Teen Choice Awards before it came out. I remember saying to my sisters, "Maybe if we post a video of us singing it, people will find us when they're looking for Miley's video!"

Katherine described their music as "primarily pop, with influences of country and emo."

"We write our songs from the heart, about personal experiences that deeply affected us. We hope that our concerts can be inspirational, moving, and a powerful experience to all who hear us live!" she said.

Vine famous

Lee and Cimorelli will also be joined at the Karpos Multimedia-produced festival by Ryan Higa and David Choi, who both became famous via YouTube. Higa is known for his witty and funny videos, while Choi has enthralled fans with his music covers and original songs.

The newest addition to the Click Play roster is the duo of Sam and Colby, who has 1 million fans on Vine. With their youthful good looks, Sam and Colby are living the life, travelling all over the world and sharing their motto, “Onward and Upward,” while posting hilarious 6-second videos.

Regular priced tickets are available for the rate of P3,500, while VIP Clickers are priced at P4,500, which includes a chance to win exclusive meet and freet passes via Click Play's social media giveaway contests, free Click Play poster, lanyard and I.D. Tickets are available at SM tickets online and outlets nationwide. -- Report from Joko Magalong
