Huey, Klepac reach Aussia Open semis

Filipino-American Treat Huey and his Slovenian partner Andreja Klepac beat Taiwan’s Yung Jan Chan and India’s Rohan Bopanna in two sets to move to the semifinals of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Huey and Klepac, who won 6-2, 7-5, will meet the US’ Coco Vandeweghe and Romania’s Horia Tecau in the semis.

Vandeweghe and Horia Tecau had a tougher time getting through the quarterfinals by hacking out a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-6 win against Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Bob Ryan.

Prior his victory, Huey and his doubles partner yielded to Canada’s Daniel Nestor and the Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek in two sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Huey's semis march is the best finish so far by a Filipino tennis player in a Grand Slam tournament since 1981 when Virgilio Sison reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, according to the Philippine Star. – With a report from Reuters and The Philippine Star
