You've been pronouncing Godiva wrong this whole time

MANILA – Many of us know Godiva, the Belgian brand of chocolates known for its decadent truffles and chocolate-dipped strawberries.

But do you know how to pronounce the brand’s name correctly?

At the brand’s 90th anniversary celebration last month, Belgium’s Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs said that Godiva was intended to be pronounced as Go-dee-vuh, as opposed to the more familiar God-eye-vuh, according to an article on the food website Delish.

“To be fair, both pronunciations are perfectly acceptable and considered correct by Godiva representatives. However, as stores open in new markets, employees tend to pronounce it the Belgian way to honor the company’s roots, explains chef chocolatier Philippe Daue,” Delish said.

Early this month, netizens were surprised to find out that the Spanish clothing brand Zara is pronounced as “dzah-dah,” as revealed by the lifestyle website Refinery29.
