California ice cream brands want to enter PH market
MANILA – There is always enough room for ice cream here in the Philippines, especially as Filipinos continue to find ways to beat the sweltering summer days.
And the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB) is taking this opportunity to introduce its ice cream brands to the local market. If everything goes according to plan, over 200 ice cream products may finally be launched here in the Philippines.
“We are bringing in all these suppliers from the state of California to the Philippines. We are bringing them together and we’re linking them to customers,” said CMAB consultant Janet Arellano, referring to the recently held Ice Cream Fair in Batangas, where selected distributors and importers were presented with various California ice cream products.
“The Philippines is a hot country and it just goes hand in hand with ice cream,” she added. “Who doesn’t like ice cream?”
Indeed, the Philippines is home to countless types of ice cream, from the sorbetes sold in street carts to supermarket staples and artisanal varieties.
But many Filipinos have yet to try ice cream brands carrying the “Real California Milk” seal – or those made with 100% California milk – such as Rosa Brothers, Gelato by Naia, Mikawaya Mochi Ice Cream, Crystal Creamery, and the “super premium” Coolhaus, among many others.
“We’re here to market those products,” said Arellano, noting that this is already their second attempt to push California brands to the country.
Aside from the Philippines, the CMAB is also introducing their products to other parts of Asia, such as South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan.
In these countries, feedback has so far been good. “Believe it or not, we have an Asian ice cream product called mochi in California, and it’s actually doing really well in China. Who would’ve thought? Mochi is a Japanese dessert and the Chinese want the ones from California,” she said.
