Kimbo Slice, the highly popular streetfighter turned mixed martial arts star, has died at the age of 42, MMA promotion Bellator and the American Top Team confirmed.
Slice, born Kevin Ferguson, rose to prominence thanks to street fights that became viral on YouTube. He went on to compete in the UFC and Bellator, last fighting in February against DaDa 5000 (Dhaffir Harris).
Ferguson beat Harris via third round knockout, but the result was overturned after Ferguson tested positive for steroids.
According to a report from the Associated Press, Ferguson was hospitalized in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, last Monday.
Bellator, in a statement sent to NBC, said they are "shocked and saddened by the devastating and untimely loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family."
"One of the most popular MMA fighters ever, Kimbo was a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport," it said. "Outside of the cage he was a friendly, gentle giant and a devoted family man."
"His loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family and all of Kimbo's friends, fans, and teammates."
