MANILA, Philippines – Filipino golfer Miguel Tabuena has qualified to the U.S. Open after topping the sectional qualifying tournament at The Olympic Club and the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, California on Tuesday.
Tabuena finished the tournament with an 11-under par 132 to become one of the six golfers to earn tickets to the US Open scheduled for June 16-19 at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
He carded an 8-under 64 at Lake Merced and wrapped up his tournament with a 3-under 68 at the Ocean Course at the Olympic Club, to finish two strokes ahead of Justin Suh, Gregor Main, and Mark Anguiano.
Tyler Raber and Brandon Harkins were the other qualifiers from the sectional qualifying tournament.
"I told myself that Lake Merced would be the easier course, and I needed to go low there, which I did," Tabuena said in an interview with the US Open website.
"I am just really happy with my rounds," he added. "I am still in shock. This will be my first major, and I just can't wait to have fun next week."
The 21-year-old Tabuena, who turned pro at 16 years old, had two eagles, 10 birdies, and three bogeys in the two-round qualifiers. The US Open will be his first major tournament.
"I am really happy with the way I am playing right now," added Tabuena, who won the 2015 Philippine Open. "I had a lot of help from members here."
World No. 2 Jordan Spieth is the defending US Open champion.
