Frampton wins slugfest over Santa Cruz to claim WBA title
NEW YORK -- Carl Frampton defeated Mexico's Leo Santa Cruz by a majority decision Saturday to claim the WBA featherweight crown and become the first boxer from Northern Ireland to win titles in two divisions.
The challenger Frampton improved to 23-0 with 14 knockouts as he had to overcome a height and weight disadvantage in one of the few times in his career he has moved up to fight at 126 pounds.
"It is a dream come true," said Frampton, who was born in Belfast. "I had a dream of winning a world title and I won it.
"I won it with my heart, not with my head. I got my hand raised."
The 29-year-old Frampton controlled the fight between the two undefeated boxers in the early rounds, landing a punishing left hook in the second round that sent the champ backpedaling across the ring.
He then held on for the win as Santa Cruz gained steam in the middle rounds before the two closed it out by exchanging heavy blows in the middle of the ring as the final bell rang.
One judge scored it even, 114-114, while the other two gave it to Frampton 117-111 and 116-112.
Frampton previously held the IBF and WBA super-bantamweight titles.
Frampton punctuated his impressive early round performance by staggering the champion in the second round with a left hook. His short counter shot slammed into the right side of Santa Cruz's head, sending the Mexican stumbling backwards into the ropes with 45 seconds left in the round.
Frampton then padded his lead by winning the next three rounds before Santa Cruz turned it on in the sixth, which proved to be one of his best rounds of the fight as he landed some solid combination punches.
But Santa Cruz's inability to score enough points in the early going caught up to him as Frampton did not tire in the later rounds.
- 'Get him in rematch' -
"He has a difficult style, but we know his style and will get him in the rematch," Santa Cruz said.
Santa Cruz had considered pulling out of the fight a few months ago because his father and trainer, Jose Santa Cruz, is battling bone cancer.
But dad was at his son's side on Saturday night as the trainer continues to wage the fight of his life against the disease.
Leo Santa Cruz (32-1-1, 18 knockouts) suffered the first defeat of his career, losing the belt he won also by a majority decision when he beat Abner Mares last August. He defended it five months ago when he stopped Kiko Martinez in five rounds.
Frampton won the 126 pound title despite giving away two inches in height and four inches in reach to Santa Cruz.
He is now 5-0 in title fights and 8-0 in fights above 122 pounds.
The crowd of 9,062 at the Barclays Center arena included four-time major championship winning golfer Rory McIlroy.

Pokemon GO players robbed at gunpoint in London park
LONDON - Three teenagers playing the hit game Pokemon GO have been robbed at gunpoint in a north London park and forced to hand over their mobile phones, British police said on Saturday.
Armed robberies are rare in Britain and police said they were hunting three suspects thought to be aged around 16 or 17 in relation to the incident on Tuesday evening.
While one suspect demanded that the three teenagers hand over their phones, a second revealed what the police said was a handgun from his waistband. The three teenagers handed over their phones and left the scene unhurt.
Nintendo Pokemon GO has become the unexpected and runaway smash hit of the year, with players looking at their mobile screens to find virtual Pokemon characters that are appearing at office spaces, restaurants, museums, parks and other sites via the augmented reality technology.
The game has already been blamed for a rash of accidents and a slew of mishaps stemming from distracted players.
First rolled out just over three weeks ago, the game has driving up Nintendo's market value by 50 percent.

Review: Excited about Pokemon Go? Watch 'Nerve' first
"Nerve" is the name of an internet game where players are dared to do wild stunts for cash prizes and fame among the Watchers. One day, mousy and nerdy girl Vee gets pressured by her friend Sydney to play the game. On her very first dare, Vee meets another player codenamed Ian. From this first dare, Vee and Ian would go all around New York City doing task after task as they escalate from plain crazy to dangerously deadly.
This film lets us enter an unseen world of the Millennials of this internet age. This world drawn here in "Nerve" is all so cool and colorful, but it may not necessarily be a pretty sight or a safe ride. We get drawn in and get mesmerized by this youth culture, probably in the way films like "Rebel Without a Cause," "St. Elmo's Fire" or "Fight Club" did in years past.
It is the charisma of the lead characters and the likability of the actors who portray them which make this risky ride worthwhile.
Emma Roberts may be less memorable than her same-name contemporaries Watson and Stone. I only recall her seeing her once before playing Nancy Drew. As Vee, she really hits her stride when she is already playing the game, looking mighty fine in that pricey green cocktail dress she wore for most of the film. I like her winning smile, her fresh innocence and girl-next-door vibe that would make you root for her to win it all.
As Ian, Dave Franco plays another fun, devil-may-care guy like what he played in "Now You See Me." He has a distinct charm from his more famous brother, James, and should have no trouble establishing himself on his own. He had great chemistry with Roberts in the dares they did together, especially in that wacky stunt in the swanky department store. It was clear to see why they attracted plenty of "fans" in the film.
I was really surprised when I recognized Juliette Lewis playing Vee's harassed mother Nancy. Time really flies. If this film was done back in the '90s I would not be surprised if quirky Lewis would be cast in it. She would most probably be perfect in the role of Sydney, Vee's insecure best friend played here by Emily Meade.
Of course, the technological advances in special visual effects that the industry uses these days make the impossible possible to happen onscreen in a more realistic manner. They can literally make characters ride a motorcycle down through NYC traffic blindfolded or hang by one hand from a crane atop a skyscraper, and make special effects make it appear that these can happen. In a film like this, we suspend our disbelief and breathlessly immerse in the fun and the danger vicariously.
I thought it would be very interesting for the older generation (Baby Boomers and Gen X'ers) to watch this and worry about what their kids could be up to these days. Like several films about the internet, like "Disconnect" or "Unfriended," this is another cautionary tale about the risks that abound within the Net. The current craze Pokemon Go is already getting some youngsters into trouble and accidents. This technology we see in "Nerve" may not be as far-fetched as you may think. 7/10

7 Ways to Use a Reverse Mortgage as a Financial Planning Tool
In the past, the main purpose of a Reverse Mortgage was to help seniors to fulfill cash needs by allowing them to pull the equity in their homes. But today, many seniors are finding that even if they don’t particularly need to fulfill a cash need, they can take advantage of the benefits of a reverse mortgage as a tool to use strategically in retirement planning. Here are 7 ways a reverse mortgage be used as a financial planning tool.
You can delay Social Security and pension payouts
Some seniors may financially need to use payouts from Social Security and pensions as soon as they are available. However, with the cash from your reverse mortgage, you will be financially sound enough to wait on receiving those payouts, thus increasing how much you receive.
You can postpone drawing down retirement assets, giving assets time to grow
This idea follows the same formula as your Social Security and Pension payouts. The longer you can delay in receiving your benefits, the longer they have to grow. With a reverse mortgage, you can afford to wait.
You can increase your cash flow by eliminating monthly mortgage payments
Every month, a monthly mortgage payment takes a chunk out from your income. But with a reverse mortgage, your existing mortgage is paid off. This leaves you with extra money in your pocket that would have normally gone to paying your existing mortgage.
You have access to a low cost, non-cancellable, GROWING line of credit
With a reverse mortgage, you have an ever-growing line of credit available to you. It grows with time. This means that the line of credit available to you years from now will be much larger than the line of credit available to you now.
You can protect your portfolio performance in a down market
In a down market, your portfolio and cash flow may not be at its peak performance. With a reverse mortgage, the incoming funds are able to protect you until the market picks back up again.
You can have annuity-style payments using your home’s equity
With a reverse mortgage, you are able to choose the option of receiving your funds in annuity-style payments. This is perfect for some types of people who would rather plan their income as a steady flow.
You can replace cash reserves
Some people have less cash in reserve than they would like. A reverse mortgage gives you the chance to catch up and replace your cash reserves, getting you up to speed financially.
These are just a few examples of how you can use a reverse mortgage as a strategic tool. With the right plan in place, you will be well on your way to a solid retirement.

Mickelson makes cut despite horror start, McIlroy misses it
SPRINGFIELD, New Jersey - Phil Mickelson made a "horrific" start to the second round of the PGA Championship on Friday but recovered to make the cut with nothing to spare, while Rory McIlroy's bogey at the last saw him miss out by one stroke.
Mickelson sliced his tee shot out-of-bounds at the par-four first, his ball landing on the adjacent Shunpike Road and bouncing onto another street.
"Just a total mental block on that first hole. It was just horrific," said Mickelson, who teed up again and in the end was fortunate to salvage a triple-bogey seven after almost hitting his approach shot out-of-bounds too.
"I think in the history of the PGA Championship, that's the worst start of any player's round. I'd have to look that up."
Mickelson looked stunned as he trudged to the second tee but settled down and had only one further blemish, a bogey at the 16th, before closing with a birdie at the par-five 18th to make the cut with nothing to spare.
"I was able to fight back and be patient, start to make a birdie here or there," the British Open runner-up said after shooting a 70 for one-over 141, 10 strokes behind leaders Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb.
"I actually hit a lot of good shots and missed on a lot good opportunities in the middle of the round."
McIlroy, who played with Mickelson, messed up the final hole to miss the cut for the first time in eight starts at the PGA Championship.
"I've hit the ball really well this week and I'm walking away not playing the weekend. It's really disheartening," said the world number four.
McIlroy, who continues to struggle on the greens, also missed the cut at the U.S. Open and tied for 10th at the Masters and for fifth at the British Open.
The Northern Irishman's last major win came at the 2014 PGA Championship in Kentucky.
"I just need to figure out what to do on the greens. I need to have a long hard think about that.
"I think if you had to give anyone else in this field my tee shots this week, they would have been up near the top of the leaderboard. It just shows you how bad I was around the greens."
Mickelson agreed.
"You watch him with a driver and it's the sweetest thing you can imagine," he said. "He's just so tentative through impact (with his putter). He's just not confident. You can just tell." (Reporting by Andrew Both in Cary, North Carolina; Editing by Peter Rutherford; )

Amazon's Bezos passes Buffett, becomes 3rd-richest person: Forbes
NEW YORK - Jeff Bezos, the founder and chief executive of Amazon.com Inc., has become the world's third-richest person as of the market close for the first time, Forbes magazine said, passing Warren Buffett, the chairman and chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
Bezos' fortune was $65.3 billion as of 4:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday, compared with Buffett's $64.9 billion.
Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates remained the world's richest person, at $77.7 billion, while Spain's Amancio Ortega, who founded the Zara clothing chain's owner Inditex SA, was second at $72.7 billion. Facebook Inc. co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg was fifth, at $54 billion.
Bezos, 52, owns close to 18 percent of Amazon. Its stock has risen by roughly 50 percent since early February, as the world's largest online retailer continued to upend retailing as more people took to the Web rather than the mall to shop.
Amazon's share price rose further in after-hours trading, after the Seattle-based company reported better-than-expected second-quarter results.
Buffett, 85, owns close to 18 percent of Berkshire, but his donation this month of $2.86 billion of Berkshire stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and four family charities led to his drop to fourth place. He has donated more than $24.3 billion to the Gates Foundation and family charities since 2006.
Berkshire is based in Omaha, Nebraska, and has roughly 90 business units including Geico car insurance, the BNSF railroad and Dairy Queen ice cream.
In June, Buffett called Bezos a "classic example" of how a business owner could thrive, by having focused at Amazon on how to "delight" customers, and keep them coming back, rather than simply process their orders.

Pope Francis walks alone through horrors of Nazi death camp
Pope Francis on Friday walked alone through the notorious wrought-iron "Arbeit Macht Frei" gate at Auschwitz-Birkenau, beginning a historic visit to the former Nazi death camp.
His head bowed, the pope prayed in silent contemplation before meeting Holocaust survivors -- some of whom he tenderly kissed -- in front of the death wall where the Nazis summarily executed thousands of people by firing squad.
Among the survivors he met were Helena Dunicz Niwinska, a 101-year-old woman who played the violin in the Auschwitz orchestra, as well as survivors who worked at the camp hospital or who were there as children.
Francis lit a candle in front of the death wall, bowing his head in prayer before visiting the cell of Polish priest and saint Maximilian Kolbe who died at Auschwitz after taking the place of a condemned man.
The visit falls on the 75th anniversary of the day Kolbe was condemned to death.
The Argentine will later lead prayers for the 1.1 million mostly-Jewish victims murdered at the camp.
Ahead of his visit Francis said that rather than making a speech, he would stand in silence to reflect on the horrors committed and let his tears flow.
After arriving Wednesday in Poland -- the heartland of Nazi Germany's atrocities -- the pontiff said the world had been plunged into a piecemeal third world war.
He has repeatedly denounced those committing crimes in the name of religion, after Europe suffered a string of deadly jihadist attacks.
The pontiff has forged ever-closer ties between the Catholic Church and Jews since his election in 2013.
As the morning rain subsided and the sun began to shine, around 200 people gathered by a big screen in Birkenau to await his arrival, among them a group of elderly Poles known as the "righteous among the nations" who risked their lives to help hide and protects Jews during the Holocaust.
Prayers will be said just a stone's throw from the ruins of one of the crematoriums which was blown up by the Nazis as they evacuated the camp.
- 'Scream against injustice' -
Poland's Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich welcomed the pontiff's intention to remain silent during his visit to the camp, saying "often people go to Auschwitz... and they are silent (about the horrors) for the rest of their lives".
"Instead, once we leave Birkenau we must spend the rest of our lives screaming, yelling and fighting all kinds of injustices," he said Thursday.
The pope will travel the two miles (three kilometres) to Birkenau, the main extermination site, and be driven along tracks laid in 1944 to allow trains of prisoners to be transported directly to the gas chambers and crematoria.
There, some 25 Christian Poles who risked their lives during the war to help hide and protect Jews -- a group recognised by Israel's Yad Vashem as "Righteous Among the Nations" -- will tell their stories to the pope.
Among them will be Maria Augustyn, whose family hid a Jewish couple behind a wardrobe for years, and Anna Bando, who helped rescue an orphan from the Warsaw ghetto and gave several Jews forged "Aryan" papers.
A Hebrew prayer for the dead will be read aloud in Polish by Stanislaw Ruszala, Catholic parish priest of the town of Markowa, where a family was wiped out after they were discovered to be sheltering Jews.
Jozef and Wiktoria Ulma and their seven children were butchered. Wiktoria, who was seven months pregnant at the time, had started giving birth before she was executed, according to the Vatican.
More than 100,000 non-Jewish Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, homosexuals and anti-Nazi partisans also died at the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in occupied Poland. The Soviet Red Army liberated it in 1945.
Two of the pope's predecessors also visited the camp: John Paul II -- a former archbishop of Krakow -- in 1979 and Benedict XVI in 2006.

Djokovic stands between Murray and second gold
ISLAMABAD - Britain's Andy Murray, bristling with confidence after ending a three-year wait for another grand slam title at Wimbledon, will seek to make history in Brazil by becoming the first man to win successive Olympic gold medals in men's singles tennis.
But to replicate his London Olympics triumph Murray will need to find a chink in the armour of Novak Djokovic, the proud Serb who has dominated men's tennis in recent years and now has his eye on the only major honour to elude him.
In recent years Murray has struggled to hold his own in the rivalry against childhood friend Djokovic, who defeated him in the 2016 Australian and French Open finals to became the first man since 1969 to hold all four grand slam titles at once.
Djokovic's maiden French Open title elevated the Serb, a winner of 12 grand slams, to the pantheon of tennis greats but a lacklustre third-round exit at Wimbledon has offered hope to Murray and his other rivals that his dominance may be ebbing.
"Winning medals for your country is as good as it gets," said Murray, who in 2012 became the first Briton in 104 years to win a men's singles gold medal at Olympics.
Three-time grand slam winner Murray will be hoping to improve on his 24-10 career match record against Djokovic in Brazil, where the two men are favourites to take gold.
Roger Federer's hopes of winning a men's singles Olympics gold to go with the doubles title he won in 2008 look to be at an end, however, after the 34-year-old pulled out of Rio -- and the rest of the season -- to undergo rehabilitation on his left knee.
In the women's game, 22-time grand slam winner Serena Williams is hot favourite to retain the Olympic singles gold that she won for the first time in 2012.
Williams, who won three Olympic doubles gold medals with sister Venus, underscored her dominance of the women's game this month by lifting her seventh Wimbledon title.
Germany's Angelique Kerber and Spain's Garbine Muguruza have contested the last four grand slam finals against Williams and are expected to be her main challengers in Rio.
But Russia's Maria Sharapova, who lost to Williams in the 2012 final, will miss Rio as she is still serving a two-year ban for failing a drugs test. (Reporting by Drazen Jorgic,; Editing by Neville Dalton)

Transgender woman makes history at Democratic convention
PHILADELPHIA - Sarah McBride on Thursday became the first openly transgender person to address a national US political party convention, telling Democrats that White House nominee Hillary Clinton "understands the urgency" of the fight for equality.
"My name is Sarah McBride and I am a proud transgender American," the beaming rights activist told cheering delegates on the fourth and final day of the Democratic National Convention that anointed Clinton as the party's flagbearer.
"Hillary Clinton understands the urgency of our fight," she said. "She will work with us to pass the equality act, to combat violence against transgendered women of color, and to end the HIV-AIDS epidemic once and for all."
Transgender people have seen their cause advance in recent years, notably this April when a US Circuit Court of Appeals recognized that transgender Americans are protected under federal laws banning sex-based discrimination.
The issue has become a political flashpoint in several states including North Carolina, prompting lawmakers to take sides on whether communities or institutions can forbid transgender people from using the bathrooms of their gender identity.
In June after a lengthy review, the Pentagon said it was ending the ban on transgender people being able to serve openly in the US military.
"Despite this progress, so much work remains," said McBride, who noted that she came out as transgender while serving as the student body president at her college.
"Today in America, LGBTQ people are still targeted by hate that lives in both laws and in hearts. Many still struggle just to get by, but I believe that tomorrow can be different."
McBride was introduced at the convention by Sean Patrick Maloney, an openly gay member of the US House of Representatives.
"You know, it's a beautiful thing when your country catches up to you, and when your basic rights, and your very family are on the line," Maloney said.
Trump, he added, "doesn't care" about some families. "He's against marriage equality. He wants to go back."
The convention has embraced the Democratic message of inclusion, particularly for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
McBride's appearance on center stage comes one week after Caitlyn Jenner, an avowed Republican who is the world's most famous transgender woman, defended gender rights in Cleveland on the sidelines of the Republican convention that picked Donald Trump as their party's nominee.
Jenner's support of a political party reluctant to advance the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people has drawn criticism from the LGBT community.

Star-studded lineup unveiled for 73rd Venice Film Festival
The Venice Film Festival revealed a star-filled line-up for its 73rd annual edition on Thursday, featuring top Hollywood names and auteur directors in a wide selection of US and international movies.
The world's oldest film festival will open with Damien Chazelle's "La La Land", starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in a musical romantic comedy-drama about a jazz pianist who falls in love with an aspiring actress in Los Angeles.
In competition for the top prize are 20 films, including Ana Lily Amirpour's "The Bad Batch", a black comedy about cannibals in a Texas wasteland, and fashion designer Tom Ford's thriller "Nocturnal Animals", featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams.
Serbian director Emir Kusturica will be also be vying for the Golden Lion award with his "Na Mlijecnom Putu" (On the Milky Road), featuring himself and Monica Bellucci in a story that stretches through war, love and living as a reclusive monk.
Other films in the main line-up include German director Wim Wenders' "Les Beaux Jours d'Aranjuez", Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve's "Arrival", Dutch director Martin Koolhoven's "Brimstone" and Russia's Andrei Konchalovsky with "Rai" (Paradise).
Pablo Larrain's biopic "Jackie" starring Natalie Portman as first lady Jacqueline Kennedy in the aftermath of her husband's assassination was added to the competition at the last minute.
The festival's artistic direct Alberto Barbera said that this year's films spoke about universal themes but took a more subtle and less graphic approach to depict day-to-day life, violence and poverty than in previous editions.
"The great themes, philosophical and existential questions...this time are approached with film-makers taking a distance from the brutality of reality," he told a press conference announcing the line-up.
"So there are no more scenes of everyday life or footage of today's wars, but the great themes are still there. It is not an escape from the contemporary world, it is used as a way to reflect on today's world in a different way."
The first two episodes of Paolo Sorrentino's hotly anticipated mini TV series "The Young Pope", featuring Jude Law as a cigarette-smoking American pontiff Pius XIII, will screen in an out-of-competition section.
Mel Gibson's "Hacksaw Ridge", based on the true story of a World War II army medic who refused to bear arms, but later received the Medal of Honor for saving many of his comrades, will also screen out of competition, alongside Philippe Falardeau's boxer movie "The Bleeder" with Naomi Watts.
The festival will close with Antoine Fuqua's "The Magnificent Seven", showing Denzel Washington in a modern remake of the classic about hired guns in the Old West protecting a town from thieves.
British director Sam Mendes, known for James Bond movies "Skyfall" and "Spectre" heads this year's jury. The festival runs from Aug. 31 to Sept. 10.

Eating red meat linked to kidney failure risk
Red meat may take a toll on the kidneys that increases risk for kidney disease and eventually kidney failure, a large study suggests.
The authors also found that replacing some red meat in the diet with other types of protein – whether chicken, fish, eggs or vegetable sources – might dramatically reduce that risk.
“There is an increase in numbers of individuals developing chronic kidney disease worldwide, and many progress to end-stage renal disease, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant,” Woon-Puay Koh told Reuters Health by email.
“Current guidelines recommend restricting dietary protein intake in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease to help reduce symptoms and slow progression to end-stage renal disease,” said Koh, a researcher at the National University of Singapore and the study’s senior author.
Though limiting protein staves off progression of existing kidney disease, little is known about whether protein, and meat in particular, contributes to the risk for developing kidney disease, Koh’s team writes in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Globally, an estimated 500 million people have chronic kidney disease, the researchers note.
The National Kidney Foundation says that approximately 660,000 people in the U.S. are being treated for the end-stage kidney disease, kidney failure. Of these, nearly 470,000 are on dialysis and 193,000 have had a kidney transplant.
Since there is little evidence that overall dietary protein restriction or limiting specific food sources of protein intake may slow kidney function decline in the general population, Koh said, “we embarked on our study to see what advice should be given to the general public worried about their kidney health regarding types or sources of protein intake.”
The researchers examined data on more than 60,000 adults living in Singapore and participating in a long-term health study. They grouped the participants according to how much protein they ate, and after 15 years of follow-up, found that about 1,000 people had developed kidney failure.
The study team found that participants who ate the largest amount of red meat had about a 40 percent greater risk of developing kidney failure compared with people consuming the lowest amounts of meat.
However, the researchers didn’t find any associations between kidney health and intake of poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products or legumes. In fact, they calculated that substituting some other source of protein for one daily serving of red meat reduced the risk of kidney failure by up to 62 percent.
“Our findings suggest that individuals can still maintain their protein intake unless their kidney function has been severely compromised. However, to reduce the risk of end-stage renal disease, it is best to eat red meat in moderation,” Koh said.
It’s not necessary “to avoid red meat like poison,” she added, but best not to make it the single meat item at every meal, or main protein source every day.
The study doesn’t prove that eating red meat causes kidney disease, Koh acknowledged.
“Future studies are warranted to confirm our findings and to investigate the underlying mechanisms as to how the chemicals present in red meat may aggravate the progression of chronic kidney disease,” Koh said.
Even so, Lauren Graf, a clinical dietitian specializing in pediatric nephrology at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, said, “this is such an important study and is consistent with a large body of evidence suggesting that excess protein from meat can be damaging to the kidneys.”
Graf, who was not involved in the study, said the kidney damage might be due to the higher acid-forming effects of meat protein in the digestive tract compared with plant protein.
“The kidneys are responsible for removing extra acid consumed from the diet and meat protein, therefore, creates a greater workload for the kidneys,” Graf said. “Plant-based diets that are rich in vegetables and fruit have the opposite effect.”

Apple hits milestone: 1 billion iPhones sold
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple announced Wednesday the sale of its billionth iPhone, a milestone for the company as it seeks to keep momentum in a competitive smartphone market.
Chief executive Tim Cook made the announcement at a staff meeting at the company's California headquarters.
"IPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history," he said in a statement.
"It's become more than a constant companion. IPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day. Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we've always set out to make the best products that make a difference."
The news comes a day after Apple reported a drop in iPhone sales over the past quarter, a second straight drop after uninterrupted growth since its introduction in 2007.
Apple sold 40.4 million iPhones in the quarter ending June 25, down 15 percent from a year earlier, highlighting concerns over growth for the iconic smartphone.
The quarterly results underscored the challenges for Apple, which has built a huge business around the iPhone but is unlikely to see continued growth, due to a saturated smartphone market and increased competition.
Apple has been seeking to diversify its product line and move into services for a more stable revenue base, while keeping users in its ecosystem with offerings such as music, connected cars and its Apple Watch.

Fed leaves rates unchanged, says risks to outlook reduced
WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged on Wednesday but said near-term risks to the U.S. economic outlook had diminished, opening the door to a resumption of monetary policy tightening this year.
The U.S. central bank said the economy had expanded at a moderate rate and job gains were strong in June. It added that household spending also had been "growing strongly," and pointed
to an increase in labor utilization.
While Fed policymakers said they continued to closely monitor inflation data and global economic and financial developments, they indicated less worry about possible shocks that could push the economy off course.
"Near-term risks to the economic outlook have diminished," the Fed's policy-setting committee said in its statement following a two-day meeting in which it left its benchmark overnight interest rate in a range of 0.25 percent to 0.50 percent.
The Fed noted, however, that inflation expectations were on balance little changed in recent months, and gave no firm indication of whether it would raise rates at its next policy meeting in September.
Most Fed policymakers had urged caution in raising rates until there was concrete progress in moving inflation toward the central bank's 2 percent target.
"It's a little bit more hawkish, but not much," said Walter Todd, chief investment officer at Greenwood Capital Associates in South Carolina.
The Fed's preferred inflation rate currently stands at 1.6 percent and has been below target for more than four years.
U.S. Treasury prices pared gains after the Fed's decision, while the U.S. dollar briefly strengthened against the euro and yen. U.S. stocks extended declines before later reversing course to trade largely flat in the session.
Federal funds futures implied traders still see roughly even odds of a rate increase at the Fed's December meeting and about a 20 percent chance of such a move in September, a bit lower than before the decision, according to CME's FedWatch Group.
The policy-setting committee will also meet at the beginning of November, but a rate hike at that time is generally seen as unlikely because it would occur a week before the U.S. presidential election.
A Reuters poll of economists suggested the Fed is most likely to wait until December to raise rates.
"There wasn't any tip that the Fed will raise rates in September," said Mike Materasso, co-chair of Franklin Templeton's fixed income policy committee in New York. "A rate increase is warranted this year, most likely at the end of the year, but a lot has to do with a benign world arena."
Kansas City Fed President Esther George was the only policymaker to dissent at this week's meeting. She has favored raising rates at three of the last four meetings.
FOCUS ON DATA, YELLEN
The Fed has held steady on rates since December, when it raised them for the first time in nearly a decade and signaled another four rate increases were in the offing for 2016.
That was scaled back to two hikes this year after central bank policymakers issued new projections in which they also lowered their longer-term growth estimates for the U.S. economy.
A global economic slowdown, financial market volatility and uncertainty over the impact of Britain's June vote to leave the European Union have repeatedly forced the Fed to delay another
rate increase.
The U.S. economy, however, has suffered little initial impact from the so-called 'Brexit' vote. A string of better-than-expected economic data recently as well as an easing in financial conditions also have calmed nerves.
Fed officials will now turn their attention to this Friday's first initial estimate of U.S. gross domestic product for the second quarter, which is expected to show a healthy rebound from the previous quarter.
The economy likely expanded at a 2.3 percent annualized rate during the second quarter, according to the Atlanta Federal Reserve's latest forecast.
The closely-watched U.S. monthly employment report will be issued on Aug. 5, followed three weeks later by a speech from Fed Chair Janet Yellen at the annual central banking conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Fed policymakers have used the conference to give major steers on central bank policy.

Obama passes torch to Clinton, warns election is test of US democracy
PHILADELPHIA, United States - President Barack Obama on Wednesday called on Democrats to carry Hillary Clinton to victory over Donald Trump, saying the 2016 White House race was not just about party politics, but the nature of American democracy.
The two-term president offered potent testimony on the third night of his party's national convention about how Clinton, his onetime rival, became an ally and trusted advisor.
Painting Republican nominee Donald Trump as a know-nothing who cozies up to dictators, Obama said November's vote was "not just a choice between parties or policies; the usual debates between left and right."
"This is a more fundamental choice," he said, telling convention delegates in Philadelphia --- the city where America's constitution was written -- that this was a battle for the very "meaning of our democracy."
"This is a more fundamental choice -- about who we are as a people, and whether we stay true to this great American experiment in self-government," he said.
Obama spearheaded a day-long effort by Democrats to depict Trump as unfit to be commander-in-chief, contrasting the political neophyte with his more experienced Democratic rival.
Trump, he said was "not really a plans guy. He's not really a facts guy either."
"He's betting that if he scares enough people, he might score just enough votes to win this election."
Punching at Trump's campaign slogan, Obama insisted "America is already great. America is already strong. And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump."
"America's never been about what one person says he'll do for us -- it's about what can be achieved by us together," he said.
- No one more qualified -
Acting as a character reference for his secretary of state of four years, with whom he battled in the 2008 primaries, Obama offered a comprehensive endorsement of Clinton as the one person uniquely qualified to succeed him.
He said the 68-year-old former first lady and senator knew what it's like to be in the room when tough epoch-making and presidency-breaking decisions were taken -- like the move to strike Osama bin Laden.
"I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman -- not me, not Bill (Clinton), nobody -- more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America," he said.
At the end of Obama's speech, Clinton -- the first woman to win the presidential nomination of a major US political party -- arrived on stage to deafening shouts from the party faithful.
- Framing the battle ahead -
Earlier in the day, Trump launched a pre-emptive attack against Obama, calling him "the most ignorant president in our history."
The Republican nominee also sparked howls of outrage from Democrats with a reference to thousands of Clinton emails held on a private server that were deleted.
"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing." Trump said.
Clinton says the emails were personal and not work-related, but for Republicans, it is a smoking gun for a cover-up involving her use of a private server during her time at the State Department.
The FBI concluded this month that Clinton had been "extremely careless" in her handling of classified material via a private email server, but did not recommend that she face criminal charges.
"He asked the Russians to interfere in American politics. Think about that," former CIA director Leon Panetta told the convention before Obama took the stage.
"As someone who was responsible for protecting our nation from cyber-attacks, it is inconceivable to me that any presidential candidate would be that irresponsible."
- Dimming limelight -
Now in the twilight of his second term, Obama faces ever-dwindling opportunities to address the nation, mold his legacy and influence the 2016 race.
But on Wednesday, he had a prime-time chance, appearing before thousands of delegates and tens of millions of viewers at home.
The White House said Obama had been working on the roughly 45-minute speech for weeks.
Yet this touchstone presidential moment had been a decade or more in the making.
The address bookends Obama's career-launching address to the Democratic convention in 2004, his contentious 2008 primary battle with Clinton and his eight years in office.
Obama made a familiar case for what has been achieved during his two terms, highlighting America's recovery from the Great Recession, the Iran nuclear deal and reforms to health care.
But this was also a passing of the party torch.
"I have confidence as I leave this stage tonight that the Democratic Party is in good hands," Obama said, appearing to become emotional.
"Thank you for this incredible journey," he said before his long exit from the stage.

The story behind President Duterte's Marikina-made shoes
MANILA – Did you know that the shoes President Rodrigo Duterte wore during his meeting with United States Secretary of State John Kerry last Wednesday was a gift from a 68-year-old shoemaker from Marikina?
According to a report from Philstar.com, the brown brogue-style boots were made by Rolando de Guzman Santos.
His daughter Rosemarie sent the shoes to Chardin, which designs barongs for the President, hoping that these will be worn during the inauguration.
“She was telling kung pwede ba raw ipadala niya ‘yung mga gawa na sapatos ng tatay niya for President Duterte,” Boni Adaza of Chardin told Philstar.com.
In a Facebook post last June, Rosemarie said she would do everything so her father could achieve his dream – that a president will wear the shoes he made.
President Duterte was not able to wear Santos’ shoes during the inauguration and even his first State of the Nation Address, with Chardin designers noting that it doesn’t match his outfit.
Early this week, however, Santos’ dream came true. In a video courtesy of PTV-4, President Duterte was seen praising his custom-made shoes from Marikina to members of his Cabinet.
“Ang Filipino-made, sa craftsmanship number one,” he said.
Marikina is known as the country’s shoe capital.

Bombings kill at least 31 in northeast Syria city, state TV says
BEIRUT - Two bomb blasts claimed by Islamic State hit the northeastern Syrian city of Qamishli near the Turkish border on Wednesday, killing at least 31 people and wounding 170 others, state television reported.
The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the blasts but gave a lower death toll of 14 killed and dozens wounded.
It said one of the bombs exploded near a security headquarters of the Kurdish administration that controls most of Hasaka province, where Qamishli is located.
State TV said one blast was from a car bomb and the other from a bomb on a motorbike.
It rolled footage purportedly from the scene of one blast, showing large-scale damage to buildings, vast amounts of rubble strewn across the road and plumes of smoke rising.
One explosion was so powerful it shattered the windows of shops in the Turkish town of Nusaybin, directly across the border. Two people were slightly hurt in Nusaybin, a witness said.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they had targeted Kurdish security forces.
The jihadist group, which is fighting against the Kurdish YPG militia and its allies in Hasaka and Aleppo provinces, has targeted Qamishli and the provincial capital, Hasaka city, in the past with bombing attacks.
A suicide blast killed six members of the Kurdish internal security force, known as the Asayish, in April. In July, an Islamic State suicide bomb killed at least 16 people in Hasaka.
The YPG captured large areas of territory from Islamic State in northeastern Syria last year and is involved in a U.S.-backed offensive that has advanced against the jihadists further west near the Turkish border. Clinton makes history, wins US Democrats' White House nomination
PHILADELPHIA - Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton secured the Democratic Party's 2016 nomination for the White House on Tuesday, becoming the first woman to head the ticket of a major party in U.S. history.
In a symbolic show of party unity, Clinton's former rival, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, told the chairwoman from the convention floor that Clinton should be selected as the party's nominee at the dramatic climax of a state-by-state roll call at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia.
"I move that Hillary Clinton be selected as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States," Sanders told thousands of delegates in the Wells Fargo Center, which erupted in cheers.
After a tough battle with Sanders during the state nominating contests, Clinton is now the party's standard-bearer against Republican nominee Donald Trump in the Nov. 8 election.
Clinton, who promises to tackle income inequality and rein in Wall Street if she becomes president, is eager to portray Trump, a businessman and former reality TV show host, as too unstable to sit in the Oval Office.
But Trump, who has never held elective office, got a boost in opinion polls from his nomination at the Republican convention last week. He had a 2-point lead over Clinton in a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday, the first time he has been ahead since early May.
Sanders has endorsed Clinton, a former first lady and U.S. senator, but some of his supporters protested in Philadelphia against the party leadership's apparent backing of her during the bitter Democratic primary fight.
Sections of the convention hall were left conspicuously unpopulated on Tuesday night as delegates from strongly pro-Sanders delegations, including California, walked out after Sanders moved that Clinton be named the nominee.
MAKING HISTORY
Earlier on Tuesday, delegates from South Dakota had given Clinton 15 votes, formally ensuring that she had more than the 2,383 votes needed to win the nomination. She emerged with a total of 2,842 votes to Sanders' 1,865.
Delegates chanted: "Hillary, Hillary" as U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland formally put forward Clinton's name for the roll-call vote.
In nominating Clinton, delegate after delegate made the point that the selection of a woman was a milestone in America's 240-year-old history. U.S. women got the right to vote in 1920 after ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
"Yes, we do break barriers, I broke a barrier when I became the first Democratic woman elected to the Senate in her own right," Mikulski said. "So it is with a full heart that I'm here today to nominate Hillary Clinton to be the first woman president," Mikulski said.
Supporters of Clinton say her Washington credentials show she has the experience needed for the White House during troubled times as the United States tries to speed up its economic recovery and faces security challenges abroad.
Detractors view her as too cozy with the establishment and say she carries political baggage dating back to the start of her husband President Bill Clinton's first White House term in the 1990s.
The star turn in Philadelphia on Tuesday will be the traditional warm spousal endorsement - with the twist that it will be a former president making the case for his wife.
In his prime-time address, Bill Clinton will be capping a day in which Democrats want to showcase Hillary Clinton's achievements on issues such as women and families, healthcare and as a former secretary of state. Speakers will include women whose children died from gun violence, some at the hands of police.
Clinton, 68, will be watching from home in Chappaqua, New York, as her husband speaks, campaign officials said.

Apple sells more iPhones than expected, shares jump after hours
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc. sold more iPhones than Wall Street expected in the third quarter and estimated its revenue in the current period would top many analysts' targets, soothing fears that demand for the company's most important product had hit a wall.
Its shares rose 7 percent in after-hours trading.
The world's most valuable publicly traded company said it sold 40.4 million iPhones in the third quarter, down 15 percent from the year-ago quarter but slightly more than the average analyst forecast of 40.02 million, according to research firm FactSet StreetAccount.
IPhone sales dropped for the second straight quarter, pushing down Apple's total revenue 14.6 percent in the fiscal third quarter, ended June 25.
Demand for Apple's phones has waned in China, partly because of economic uncertainty there, and has also slowed in more mature markets as people tend to hold on to their phones for longer. The sales slump has stoked concerns about whether the tech leader can continue to deliver profits at the level Wall Street has come to expect.
"China was a major letdown," said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. "Samsung and Huawei are much more competitive now than a year ago and the Chinese economy is not doing well at all."
Moorhead said, however, that increased services revenue - which includes the App Store and iCloud - was a "very big bright spot for Apple."
Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri told Reuters in an interview that Apple's performance had topped his expectations in a quarter weighed down by tough foreign exchange rates and difficult comparisons with blockbuster iPhone 6 sales from the previous year.
Apple reduced channel inventory by $3.6 billion, exceeding the $2 billion expected reduction, meaning sales were better than they appeared, Maestri said.
Customer demand "was better than what is implied in our results and better than we had anticipated," he said.
Sales of the iPhone fell last quarter for the first time since the gadget's release in 2007, dropping 16.3 percent. Maestri projected the gadget's average selling price to rise in the September quarter.
The iPhone drives about two-thirds of Apple's total sales. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said during a call with analysts that the iPhone SE, a cheaper, four-inch (10 cm) phone released this year, was extending the range of people able to buy Apple phones.
"It's opening the door to customers we weren't reaching before," he said.
Apple's quarterly net profit fell 27 percent to $7.8 billion, while revenue of $42.36 billion beat analysts' average estimate of $42.09 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
CHINA WORRIES
Sales in Greater China, once touted as Apple's next growth engine, decreased 33.1 percent, compared with a 112.4 percent growth in the year-earlier quarter and a near 26 percent fall in the second quarter.
Maestri attributed the drop to channel inventory reduction in the nation, foreign exchange headwinds and a general downturn in the Chinese economy.
"It is very clear that there are some signs of economic slowdown in China, and we will have to work through them," he said.
Adding to Apple's woes in China, the company's stores for books and movies went dark earlier this year. Cook said Apple was working with regulators to restore the services but played down the financial impact of the outage, saying the stores yielded less than $1 million in revenue during the short time they were on the market.
"It’s not a revenue-related issue," he said. "This is a service we want to provide our customers."
Apple's services business, which includes the App Store, Apple Pay, iCloud and other services, generated nearly $6 billion in revenue, up 18.9 percent from the previous year.
As iPhone sales level off, Apple is attempting to use such services to wring more revenue out of its existing base of users. The business emerged as Apple’s second largest after the iPhone for the first time in the second quarter, eclipsing gadgets such as the iPad and the Mac.
That shift bodes well for Apple because gross margins on services are better than the average for the rest of the company, Maestri said.
"It’s a great business because it is recurring in nature and more linked to our installed base," he said.
Maestri touted music as an example of one successful service, saying the growth of the Apple Music streaming service had more than made up for declines in digital downloads. To redouble its momentum in music, Apple purchased rights to the next season of popular series Carpool Karaoke, CBS Television Studios announced on Tuesday.
Apple forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $45.5 billion to $47.5 billion, largely above Wall Street's average estimate of $45.71 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
The forecast, covering the quarter ending in September, will likely include at least the first weekend of sales of the iPhone 7 range, which Apple is expected to launch in September.
Up to Tuesday's close, Apple's shares had fallen about 8.2 percent since the start of the year. Shares rose 7 percent to $103.47 in after-hours trade following publication of results.

Patient shoots, kills doctor in Berlin then kills self
* Shots fired at clinic in Berlin's Steglitz district -police
* Doctor badly injured and later dies, gunman kills self
* Police say "no signs at all" of link with terrorism
BERLIN - A patient shot a doctor in a university clinic in Berlin on Tuesday before killing himself, but there were "no signs at all" of a link with Islamist militancy, police in the German capital said.
Germany is on edge because of a spate of violent attacks on civilians by men of Middle Eastern or Asian origin since July 18 that have killed 10 people. Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for two of those four attacks before Tuesday.
Berlin police said the doctor had sustained life-threatening injuries in the attack at the Benjamin Franklin campus of the Charite university hospital in the southwest of the city and died shortly afterwards.
They added that the situation at the hospital in Berlin's Steglitz district was now "under control" and investigators were on the scene to determine the background to the crime.
"There is currently no danger," police said on Twitter.
Winfrid Wenzel, a spokesman for Berlin police, said the crime took place in the jaw surgery area of an outpatient clinic where the doctor was in a treatment session with the patient.
"In the course of the consultation, the patient pulled out a gun and fired several shots at the doctor. The attacker then directly turned the gun on himself and died as a result of the shots," Wenzel told Reuters TV.
He said police did not yet have information on the suspect's background, history, personal details or motivation, but added: "We do not have a single indication that this crime was motivated by extremism or Islamists."

Melason no more: Jason confirms split with Melai
MANILA -- Celebrity couple Jason Francisco and Melai Cantiveros, whose romance started inside the "Pinoy Big Brother" house, have separated after almost three years of marriage.
Francisco confirmed the split in a series of posts on the Instagram account of their only child Amelia "Mela" Lucille, who turned two last April.
Cantiveros and Francisco were married on December 9, 2013 at the Holy Cross Parish in General Santos City, three months after the comedienne announced her pregnancy.
Just two weeks ago, Cantiveros vowed to stick it out with Francisco despite some problems in their relationships, saying it is just normal for couples to have arguments.
On Tuesday, Francisco revealed that their misunderstanding started when Cantiveros accepted the series "We Will Survive," which aired its finale last July 15.
According to Francisco, they had an initial agreement that his wife won't have a partner in the series and that she will only have a leading man for the pilot week.
Francisco said it took him two months to find out that Cantiveros had a partner on the show as he was also busy working on "My Super D."
Because of this they started giving each other the cold shoulder, with Francisco sleeping in another room.
"Hanggang sa dumating ang punto na nanlalamig na kaming mag-asawa sa isa't isa, 'di na nagpapansinan sa bahay. Hanggang sa ako'y sa kabilang kwarto na natutulog. Almost two months na kaming ganun.

Review: 'Ignacio de Loyola' shows saint's humanity
A technical glitch marred the invitational VIP premiere of “Ignacio de Loyola” at the Gateway Mall Sunday. The screen went black for about three minutes even as the audio went on playing, house lights were turned on and the showing briefly stopped.
Director Paolo Dy stood up, apologized, and told the audience that the the movie was not yet over. He joked that he had asked lead star Andreas Muñoz to perform live.
Gabe Mercado, who hosted the short program before the movie was shown, explained that there had been a brownout in the area. The screen worked after that, but it went black once again before the film rewinded to an earlier scene then went on smoothly till the end.
But glitches aside, “Ignacio de Loyola” is a film that can keep viewers hooked from start to finish, mainly because of its portrayal of the main character.
“Ignacio de Loyola” follows the story of Iñigo, a brash young man whose dreams of knighthood are shattered after he seriously injured his leg in battle.
As he finds Christ during his recovery, Ignacio (he changes his name after his conversion) yearns to share God’s word throughout the world, only to find his preaching soon questioned by the Church hierarchy.
We all know St. Ignatius of Loyola as the founder of the Society of Jesus, one of the most influential religious orders in the world. The film, however, focuses on his humanity—his conversion, his short temper, his frustrations, his yearning for God.
Unlike most saint films that depict the apostolic work of the saints until their peaceful deaths, “Ignacio de Loyola” chose to cover only a short part of Ignacio’s life, specifically, the portion before the Society of Jesus came to be.
“On the one hand, in 2 hours, you can’t really tell the whole thing,” Dy told reporters after the premiere. But he adds, he and his team wanted to talk about Ignacio’s transformation from sinner to saint.
“You know the fairytale version is always he got hit by a cannonball, and while he was recuperating he read the book and suddenly, he’s transformed already,” Dy said. “That will work if you’re five years old, seven years old. But for an adult, mature audience, we need something deeper.”
“It’s real and you can see yourself in that attempt to transform yourself,” he explained.
The film’s opening scene is gripping. More gripping still are the moments of frustration as Iñigo wrestles with despair and faces a life where dreams are shattered.
Towards the end of the film, Ignacio is shown fighting his inner demons as he tries to listen to the voice of God. This dramatic sequence could well be the best one in the film, especially as it ends with Ignacio reciting his prayer of surrender: “Take and receive, O Lord, my liberty, my mind, my memory.”
Theologically, the film was spot on. The statement of the First Principle and Foundation of Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises (SpEx)—that man was born to praise, revere, and serve God—was accurate. So were the explanations of other key parts of the SpEx.
The part where St. Ignatius “meets” St. Francis of Assisi is likewise a nod to Simple Contemplation, an Ignatian prayer method where one imagines himself in the scene of the gospels with Jesus. Ignacio’s conversation with the prostitute Ana was likewise another accurate depiction of an Ignatian prayer method.
The cast gave a solid performance. Muñoz was excellent and totally owned the role, portraying every nuance of Iñigo’s character perfectly well.
The rest of the all-Spanish cast—which included Javier Godino, Julio Perillan, Pepe Ocio, and Mario de la Rosa—also performed their roles well, portraying their characters with depth.
It’s worth noting, however, that although all the actors were Spanish and all scenes were shot in Spain, “Ignacio de Loyola” is still a Filipino film. Jesuit Communications (JesCom), the media arm of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus, produced the film. Lee Briones Meily, who received several awards for her work on Laurice Guillen’s “Tanging Yaman,” was the movie’s director of photography.
The musical scoring was provided by renowned Filipino composer Ryan Cayabyab and performed by the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra. The Ateneo Chamber singers also lent their voices to the production, and the music as a whole was perfect for Ignacio’s high and low moments. The jazzy-classical music, however, may not be appealing to younger audiences who have a fondness for pop or rock tunes.
Some scenes in the film that didn’t have scoring are borderline draggy, though the actors can convince you to stay. Be ready to see some blood in the film, too. It is, after all, a medieval war movie, and some scenes may be too gory for the queasy.
Overall, however, the film is intense with a good depiction of man’s deepest frustrations, desires, and hopes.
Some may not be drawn to “Ignacio de Loyola” as the title can connote a striving for divinity that may seem unachievable for some. But “Ignacio de Loyola” is more human than holy, more relatable than preachy.
Looking to reflect on your spiritual life? Come see this film.
Just hitting the cinemas to unwind? Come anyway and see how transformation is possible—and how life can take on a whole new meaning in the face of despair.

In an interview on Monday, Vera can't help but giggle when asked about Santos. "Crush ko po siya, 'yun lang. Kaya po siguro tinutukso (ako ng ibang Star Magic artists)," she said.
Vera revealed that even after the show ended, she and Santos continue exchanging text messages as "friends."
Vera also said she's aware that Santos is being romantically linked to singer Angeline Quinto.
"Sabi po ni Erik, friends lang daw po sila, I take his word naman for it, pero hanggang hindi pa naki-clear ang isyu ay siguro distansiya po muna, friends lang muna," she said.
Asked if Santos is "boyfriend material," Vera replied, "Alam ko mabuti siyang anak, mabuting kapatid. So boyfriend material po talaga," she said.

Attacker in Japan stabs, kills 19 in their sleep at disabled center
SAGAMIHARA, Japan - A knife-wielding man stabbed and killed 19 people as they slept at a facility for the disabled in a town near Tokyo early on Tuesday, a senior government official said, Japan's worst mass killing in decades.
At least 25 other residents of the facility were wounded in the attack.
"This is a very heart-wrenching and shocking incident in which many innocent people became victims," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a scheduled news conference in Tokyo.
Police have arrested Satoshi Uematsu, 26, a former employee at the facility in Sagamihara town in Kanagawa Prefecture, about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Tokyo, a Kanagawa official said. At least one media report said Uematsu had called for euthanasia of the severely disabled.
Uematsu had turned himself in, the Kanagawa prefecture official, identified only by his surname of Sakuma, told an earlier news conference carried on public broadcaster NHK.
Another 25 people were wounded, 20 of them seriously, Sakuma said.
Kyodo news agency said the dead ranged in age from 19 to 70 and included nine males and 10 females. Earlier media reports had said as many as 45 people had been wounded.
Staff called police at 2.30 a.m. local time (1730 GMT Monday) with reports of a man armed with a knife on the grounds of the Tsukui Yamayuri-En facility, media reported. The man wore a black T-shirt and trousers, reports said.
The 3-hectare (7.6 acre) facility, established by the local government and nestled on the wooded bank of the Sagami River, cares for people with a wide range of disabilities, NHK said, quoting an unidentified employee.
Residents of the small town of Sagamihara said the last murder in the area was 10 years ago.
A woman who said she used to work at the facility said many patients were profoundly disabled.
"They are truly innocent people. What did they do? This is shocking," she told Japanese television station TBS.
BAG OF KNIVES
Police had recovered a bag with several knives, at least one stained with blood, the Kanagawa prefecture official said.
Police said they were still investigating possible motives.
Asahi Shimbun reported that the suspect was quoted by police as saying: "I want to get rid of the disabled from this world." Other reports said he had held a grudge after being fired from his job at the facility.
Broadcaster NTV reported that the arrested man presented a letter to the speaker of the lower house of Japan's parliament in February calling for euthanasia of disabled people.
"My goal is a world in which, in cases where it is difficult for the severely disabled to live at home and be socially active, they can be euthanised with the consent of their guardians," it quoted the letter as saying.
At least 29 emergency squads responded to the attack, Kyodo reported, with those wounded taken to at least six hospitals in the western Tokyo area.
NHK reported that the facility is usually locked at night but the suspect broke into the building by smashing a window.
The facility's website said the centre had a maximum capacity of 160 people, including staff.
Such mass killings are extremely rare in Japan and typically involve stabbings. Japan has strict gun laws and possession of firearms by the public is rare.
Eight children were stabbed to death at their school in Osaka by a former janitor in 2001. Seven people died in 2008 when a man drove a truck into a crowd and began stabbing people in Tokyo's popular electronics and "anime" district of Akihabara.
A revision to Japan's Swords and Firearms Control Law was introduced in 2009 in the wake of that attack, banning the possession of double-edged knives and further tightening gun-ownership rules.
Members of a doomsday cult killed 12 people and made thousands ill in 1995 in simultaneous attacks with sarin nerve gas on five Tokyo rush-hour subway trains.
