Bruce Willis diagnosed with untreatable dementia: family

LOS ANGELES - US action hero Bruce Willis has been diagnosed with untreatable dementia, his family said Thursday, less than a year after he retired from acting because of growing cognitive difficulties.

"Since we announced Bruce's diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce's condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia," a statement said.

"Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.

"Today there are no treatments for the disease, a reality that we hope can change in the years ahead.

"As Bruce's condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research."

Actress Anne Heche taken off life support after crash

LOS ANGELES - Hollywood actor Anne Heche has been taken off life support, two days after she was declared legally dead from brain injuries sustained in a car crash in Los Angeles, her spokeswoman said.

Heche, known for 1990s movies "Donnie Brasco" and "Six Days, Seven Nights" as well as a relationship with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, had been comatose since driving her car into a building on August 5.

Her body had been kept on life support until Sunday while organ donor options were explored, in accordance with her wishes, spokeswoman Holly Baird said.

"Anne Heche has been peacefully taken off life support," Baird told AFP Monday, without saying if organ recipients were found.

The violent car collision involving Heche earlier this month destroyed much of a two-story house in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles. Dozens of firefighters battled the ensuing blaze for more than an hour.

Preliminary tests of Heche's blood came back positive for narcotics, prompting a felony DUI probe, but Los Angeles police said investigations and efforts to file charges would cease after she was declared legally dead.

Celebrity media outlet TMZ, citing unnamed police sources, said Heche had tested positive for cocaine and fentanyl, with the latter sometimes used for pain relief in clinical settings.

Angelina Jolie advocates for U.S. domestic violence law

WASHINGTON — A bipartisan group of U.S. senators on Wednesday agreed on a deal to renew a long-lapsed law to strengthen domestic violence protections, just hours after Hollywood actor and humanitarian Angelina Jolie made a tearful speech of support.

Jolie's voice broke as she acknowledged the women and children "for whom this legislation comes too late" in a speech in Washington D.C.

"Standing here at the center of our nation's power, I can think only of everyone who has been made to feel powerless by their abusers by a system that failed to protect them," Jolie, wearing a black suit and pearls, said.

The Violence Against Women Act expired at the end of 2018 and U.S. President Joe Biden, who originally sponsored the bill as a senator in 1994, had campaigned on renewing it.

The House of Representatives approved its renewal in a 244-172 vote almost a year ago, but legislation stalled in Congress amid partisan disputes over access to guns and transgender issues.

"The reason many people struggle to leave abusive situations is that they have been made to feel worthless. When there is silence from a Congress too busy to renew the Violence Against Women Act for a decade, it reinforces that sense of worthlessness," said Jolie. "You think, I guess my abuser is right. I guess I'm not worth very much."

Republican Senators Joni Ernst and Lisa Murkowski and Democrats Dick Durbin and Dianne Feinstein issued a joint media release confirming they had reached a "compromise" deal to get the bill moving.

Biden said in a statement he was "grateful that this critical bipartisan bill is moving forward, and I look forward to Congress delivering it to my desk without delay."

Emotional Pinky Amador shares learning after curse-filled outburst

MANILA – For the first time, Pinky Amador granted a one-on-one sit-down interview to talk about her curse-filled outburst that was caught on video and went viral on social media early this month.

The clip captured an enraged Amador cursing at a woman inside what appears to be an office, as the actress demands for a supposed long overdue "circular."

Amador, who is wearing a face mask in the video, mentions numerous times her life being endangered, referring to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) supposedly being allowed to check in at the building where she lives.

Speaking to Korina Sanchez for “Rated K,” Amador explained that she was merely asserting her right as a resident of the said building.

“Yung buong mundo ngayon, nasa kalagitnaan tayo ng pandemya. Lahat ng tao nagtatago, nagkukulong, takot. Pati na rin ang mga kasama ko sa aking building, lahat kami sobrang nabahala. Pati na rin ako kasi pinaglalaban ko lang naman 'yung karapatan ko at naming lahat sa building na mabuhay na ligtas sa sakit,” she said.

Saying she lives alone, Amador said she is afraid to catch the respiratory illness because no one would be looking after her.

“Alam mo, hindi ko kasi kaya magkasakit dahil mag-isa lang ako. Takot akong magkasakit. Kapag nagkasakit ako, wala na tutulong sa akin dahil sarili ko lang ang inaasahan ko. Marami pa akong gustong gawin sa buhay ko. Marami pa akong gustong tulungan, marami pa akong gustong turuan,” she said.

Amador also said she has nothing against OFWs.

Ano ba ang tinatago nila,” she added.

After what happened, Amador acknowledged that her outrage may have gone too far.

“Maaaring sumobra talaga 'yung galit ko na nakapagsalita ako ng masasakit, na nainsulto ko ang mga kausap ko at pati na rin ang mga nanood ng video. Ang hinihingi ko lang naman is paumanhin dahil sa bugso ng damdamin, takot na takot na ako. Galit na galit na kaming lahat. Hindi namin alam kung bakit kami binabastos at binabalewala para sa isang bagay na dapat naman nilang ibigay sa amin,” she said.

When asked if she plans to a file case against anyone, she said: “Pinag-iisipan pa namin kasi I live alone. Doon pa rin ako nakatira sa building na 'yun. Siyempre hindi mawawala sa isipan mo na baka balikan ka or baka pahirapan ka nila. Marami sila, mag-isa lang ako. Kailangan makapagdesisyon ako ng tama para maging ligtas pa rin ako.”

Amador then turned emotional as she shared her learning from this experience.

“Tinamaan din naman ako ng malaki dito. Nakasakit ako, nasaktan din ako. I’ve learned my lesson. But this isn’t about me. This isn’t about Pinky Amador. Tungkol ito sa nakararami,” she said.

“Para sa ibang mga building administration na sana pangalagaan nila ang kalusugan ng mga nakatira doon. Sana pangalagaan nila 'yung pagbigay ng impormasyon. Napakahalaga ng impormasyon sa panahon ng pandemya,” she added.

During this uncertain time, Amador said it is important that Filipinos would help one another.

“Rated K” tried to get the side of the building administration where Amador lives but they refused to give any other statement, saying they are standing by what they have already said before.

That earlier statement is included in the video below.

Kelsey Merritt joins Viva family

MANILA – Kelsey Merritt has finally joined the Viva Artists Agency (VAA) family.

The Filipino-American model made the announcement herself through a social media post on Saturday.

“So happy to share that I’m now represented by @vivaartistsagency in the Philippines,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.

VAA made a similar announcement on its own page as it listed down Merritts achievements at a young age of 23.

Born in Pampanga, Merritt began her career in the Philippines as a commercial model before moving to America to try to make a name for herself.

True enough, she became a pride of the Philippines as she became the first Filipina to join the coveted Victoria’s Secret fashion show in 2018.

A year later, she announced her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit stint.

“Appearing in both Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated is a rare feat for many models from all over the world, and Kelsey has already achieved that in just 2 years after debuting in the international modelling stage,” VAA said.

Before her modelling career, Merritt finished AB Communications at the Ateneo de Manila University.

WATCH: Kim Chiu's 'Bawal Lumabas' enters MYX's Daily Top 10 chart

MANILA -- It's a song centered on one rule: bawal lumabas.

And ever since it came out, Kim Chiu's fun, catchy swipe at her haters and critics has become a massive hit with Filipinos, so much that in entered the MYX Daily Top 10 this Thursday.

Its debut on the local chart traces, apparently, from its high number of streams online -- it garnered more than 10 million views across Facebook and YouTube within a day of it release.

This led to it being put up on all digital platforms including Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Apple Music, and Deezer, garnering strong enough numbers that it made it to the 10th spot of the daily MYX rankings.

Chiu wrote "Bawal Lumabas" after experiencing being bullied online over an incoherent thought she had while pleading for ABS-CBN to be allowed to return on air. She described it as "one of the lowest points" of her life, before turning it into a positive.

Her song has spawned a viral dance and music covers, and she even made a merchandise line based on it to help fight COVID-19.

Adarna earned praises from her followers with some saying she continues to amaze them with her talent.

Some even requested for the actress to make an appearance on “ASAP Natin ‘To” and do a production number on the variety show.

However, this request won’t probably happen in the near future.

After going on hiatus from showbiz for nearly three years, Adarna recently said in an interview that she has no plans of returning to the limelight anytime soon, as she embraces an important role behind the cameras.

"I don't want to say, like, forever, right? But definitely, not in the next seven years," she said.

Her reason? "I want to be with my son in his formative years. I'm a very hands-on mom."

Adarna, 32, became a first-time mom during her time away from the screen. She gave birth to her son, Elias, with her former co-star John Lloyd Cruz in June 2018.

Dingdong Dantes learns to play guitar during lockdown

MANILA — Actor Dingdong Dantes has learned a new skill during this period of enhanced community quarantine.

In an Instagram post on Monday night, Dantes shared that he finally fulfilled his childhood dream of learning how to play guitar.

View this post on Instagram

Back in grade school, i was a drummer of an amateur rock band whose only claim to fame was winning first runner up in the school’s ‘94 Battle Of The Bands. Second out of only 2 participating groups! 🤣 Since then, I’ve always wanted to learn how to play a whole song on guitar. The farthest i’ve reached was learning 3 chords— G, D and A, mula pa sa kabanda kong magaling mag gitara. I had given up on that dream not until i saw the post of @kuyakim_atienza wanting to learn the instrument during this ECQ. So ayun, kailan pa ba ako matututo kundi ngayon?! I am grateful to my friend (and grade school classmate) for hooking me up with one of their stocks! Mabuti na lang at may on-line tutorials din for beginners like me. First on the list is for my little Buddy’s celebration this coming Thursday— ang napakahirap at napakalupet na Happy Birthday song.😆 Ikaw, ano request mo? 'Give yourself something to look forward to': 6 tips survive the extended COVID-19 lockdown

MANILA -- Miss travelling or going out to eat? Make a list of things you plan to do with your friends, or even by yourself, after the lockdown ends. That's just one tip from celebrity life coach and author Myke Celis on how to "survive" this extended downtime.

Celis, author of the self-help book "#BestMeEver: Of Positivity and Possibilities," said some people will find it difficult to adjust to this new reality under lockdown due to the coronavirus.

This is because "people tend to be pressured to conform," meaning that they put immense pressure on themselves to be productive during this quarantine period. He argued that "waking up the next day, COVID-free, is an achievement by itself."

"You don't even have to force yourself to do anything because (by being alive) that will be more than enough," he added.

With that in mind, below are his six tips to achieve this inner peace against the stress and anxiety brought up about COVID-19:

1. "First things first: accept the space you're in. Being resentful prevents you from growing where you are. Know that the more you resist, the more chaotic everything seems."

2. "Follow through by setting a very simple goal: to survive. This may include simply waking up healthy, keeping safe in your space and just appreciating what you have."

3. "Next: know that you have everything within to survive. We oftentimes forget that and we depend so much on everything else around us: the news, the donations, what others are doing. How different will it be if we focus on what we can do, in our space, with what we have? That makes it more self sustaining."

4. "Don't let the extended lockdown cause you to break down. Plot a workable routine that will be comfortable for you. Manage your work schedules, watch Netflix in between, exercise, bond with family. What if instead of considering it as a huge separation from the rest of the world, you see the lock down as a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with yourself and all things (and people) which really matter? By plotting your list coming from inspiration, instead of fear and desperation, you are able to defeat boredom and anxiety without going overboard and straining yourself in the process."

5. "Self-care is key. Take longer showers. Wear nice clothes. Update your skin care routine. Shave when needed. Exercise. Read books. Binge watch. Do all the things that will make you appreciate yourself more and the space you're in. Don't ever feel guilty for not subscribing to what others are doing at present. You do you."

6. "Lastly, give yourself something to look forward to: what do you want to do after the lockdown? Make a list. Plot your travels. Check out where you want to eat. What hairstyle do you want to get. What do you want to do? Just do it. And know that you deserve it. By having something to look forward to, you allow yourself to be happier and more inspired as days go by."

Oprah Winfrey donates $10 million for coronavirus relief

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oprah Winfrey said on Thursday she was donating $10 million to coronavirus relief efforts, including a new venture to help get food to vulnerable Americans during the coronavirus epidemic.

Winfrey, one of America’s richest and most influential women, made the announcement on her social media platforms.

“I am donating $10 million overall to help Americans during this pandemic in cities across the country and in areas where I grew up,” she said. Winfrey, 66, was born into poverty in Mississippi and raised in Milwaukee and Tennessee.

Part of the money will go towards the new initiative called America’s Food Fund, launched in conjunction with Apple Inc, the Ford Foundation, Laurene Powell Jobs and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

It will help feed those most impacted by the coronavirus epidemic in America, including children who rely on school lunch programs, low-income families, the elderly, and individuals facing job disruptions.

“I still remember growing up with my mother in Milwaukee when we were all out of welfare and sometimes we needed assistance for our family just to survive. At times like this, so many more people are vulnerable,” Winfrey said.

She did not say where she would direct the bulk of her $10 million donation.

Winfrey made her announcement the same day as U.S. data showed that a record 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment last week.

Winfrey last month launched a weekly series on Apple’s new streaming service, Apple TV+, called “Oprah Talks COVID-19,” in which she speaks over video platforms with spiritual leaders and others about how to get through the crisis.

Winfrey, who ended her popular television talk show in 2011 after 25 years, signed a development deal with Apple in 2018 to produce original content for the streaming service.

Actress Iza Calzado tests positive for COVID-19, recovering well - manager

MANILA — Actress Iza Calzado has tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), her manager Noel Ferrer said on Saturday, after being confined in a hospital for pneumonia.

Her manager Noel Ferrer shared the actress' condition in a statement on his Facebook account, saying: "Iza Calzado received her results yesterday that she tested positive for CoVid. She is recovering well as she was aggressively treated for pneumonia and the virus. She can actually breath now without any oxygen assistance."

Ferrer said Calzado will be tested to check if she has been ruled negative for the virus. Her husband and other people she interacted with will be screened as well, but they have not shown symptoms, he said.

The actress is the second showbiz personality to be confirmed infected with COVID-19, after screen veteran Christopher de Leon.

De Leon has since been discharged from the hospital.

Another actor, Menggie Cobarrubias, who succumbed to pneumonia recently, was tested for COVID-19. His results have yet to be released.

Prior to the Luzon lockdown due to coronavirus, which effectively halted showbiz productions, Calzado was filming the upcoming ABS-CBN teleserye "Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin."

It's unclear when Calzado first showed symptoms of pneumonia.

Veteran actor Menggie Cobarrubias dies

MANILA --  Veteran actor Domingo “Menggie” Cobarrubias passed away Thursday morning, his wife said in a Facebook post.

“Goodbye my love. Thank you for 30 wonderful years. I love you. Dear God please give me the strength to be able to face this very difficult moment of my life,” Cobarrubias’ wife Gina Jorge Cobarrubias confirmed.

“Thank you everyone for the immense love and support. Marami talagang nagmamahal sa asawa ko,” she added in another post.

The actor’s wife did not mention the cause of death of her husband.

However, Cobarrubias' niece Patricia Prudon earlier revealed on Facebook that their family has yet to get confirmation if her uncle died of COVID-19. In the same post which has already been deleted as of writing, Prudon said Cobarrubias passed away due to complications from pneumonia.

According to an entry by Romulo Joey Baquiran about Cobarrubias at the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, the veteran actor began his career in theater as Guronggurong in "The Heart of Emptiness is Black" (1974).

He then went on to star in numerous stage productions such as "Ang Bundok" (1976); "Pagbibinyag sa Apoy at Dugo" (1975 and 1985); "Dapithapon"; "Sakada"( 1975); "Pitong Taon"; "The Boys in the Band" (1977); "Batibot" (1980); "Ang Kismet" (1981); "A Hatful of Rain"; "Refuge and Strength (2000); "The Forsaken House"; "Ang Tagak"; "Isa Pang Soap Opera" (2012); and "Ang Dukesa ng Malfi” (2013).

On television and in the big screen, Cobarrubias appeared in over 100 productions, including "Sakada" (1976); "Jaguar" (1979); "Angela Markado" (1980); "Mga Uod at Rosas" (1982); "Soltero" (1984); "Orapronobis" (1989); "Sabado Nights" (1996); "Hiling" (1997); "Deathrow" (2000); and "Mano Po" (2002).

Meanwhile, among Cobarrubias’ last projects with the Kapamilya network were “Make It with You” and “Last Fool Show.”

Following his demise, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and its family of artists mourn his death.

“Paalam, Menggie. We send our love and sympathy to Menggie's family and loved ones. To fellow artists and cultural workers, when all this is over and when we can embrace each other again we will gather to remember and celebrate Menggie's life,” the CCP said in a statement.

(Ed's Note: An earlier version of this story said the veteran actor died of COVID-19, which was based on a post by his niece, Patricia Prudon, which has since been deleted. We apologize for the confusion.)
