NBA: Giannis powers Bucks past Celtics; Wizards spoil Simmons' debut

Bucks 108, Celtics 100

Giannis Antetokounmpo submitted a dominant effort of 37 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Boston Celtics, 108-100, in their first game of the season.

Four other Bucks players scored in double-digits, with Khris Middleton backing up Antetokounmpo with 15 points, nine boards, and six assists.

The Celtics, who lost Gordon Hayward to a gruesome leg injury in their season opener against Cleveland, dropped to 0-2 in the NBA season.

Jaylen Brown led Boston with 18 points, while Kyrie Irving added 17 points, four boards, three assists, and three steals.

Wizards 120, 76ers 115

Double-doubles from Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid were not enough as the Washington Wizards defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, 120-115.

Embiid had 18 points and 13 boards in just 26 minutes, while Simmons marked his NBA debut with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.

However, John Wall (28 points, 8 assists) and Bradley Beal (25 points, six rebounds, three steals) conspired to lift the Wizards to victory.

Spurs 107, Timberwolves 99

Despite playing without All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard, the San Antonio Spurs still had more than enough to down the new-look Minnesota Timberwolves, 107-99.

LaMarcus Aldridge, fresh off signing a contract extension with the Spurs, had a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Danny Green made three of his seven three-pointers to finish with 17 points.

Rudy Gay, the Spurs' biggest free agent signing in the off-season, had 14 points in his debut for San Antonio.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Butler had 12 points in his first game for Minnesota. Karl Anthony Towns led the Wolves with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Pistons 102, Hornets 90

Tobias Harris had 27 points and 10 rebounds as the Detroit Pistons won their first game in their new stadium, the Little Caesars Arena, by beating the visiting Charlotte Hornets.

Kemba Walker led the Hornets with 24 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Pacers 140, Nets 131

Indiana opened the post-Paul George era by fending off the Brooklyn Nets, 140-131, in a high-scoring affair.

Myles Turner (21 points, 14 rebounds) and Thad Young (17 points, 11 boards) were instrumental in the win, while Darren Collison also came up big with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

D'Angelo Russell, who was acquired by the Nets in the offseason from the Los Angeles Lakers, had 30 points and five assists in his debut for Brooklyn.

However, it was a brutal opener for the Nets as they lost Jeremy Lin to a knee injury in the fourth quarter.

Magic 116, Heat 109

Six player scored in double digits as the Orlando Magic defeated the Miami Heat, 116-109.

Evan Fournier had 23 points, while Nikola Vucevic had a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Hassan Whiteside's monster effort of 26 points and 22 rebounds went for naught for the Heat.

Grizzlies 103, Pelicans 91

Big games by DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis were not enough to lift the New Orleans Pelicans to a win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Mike Conley had 27 points, and the Memphis bench came up with solid performances to spoil the efforts of (33 points, 18 rebounds) and Cousins (28 points, 10 rebounds, 7 blocks).
