Samsung unveils 'unbreakable,' folding smartphone display

Samsung said it received certification in the US for an "unbreakable" and flexible display, as smartphone makers race to unveil the world's first folding smartphone.

The flexible OLED panel is overlaid with a fortified plastic window and can be used on smartphones, tablets, cars, portable gaming consoles and mobile military devices, Samsung said in a statement.

The world's largest smartphone maker is set to unveil its flagship Galaxy Note 9 in August. The iterative updates to the S and Note lines this year are in preparation for larger overhauls in 2019, including a new line with a folding display, according to technology websites.

Samsung said its flexible panel "functioned normally, with no damage to its front, side or edges" even after being dropped from nearly 4 feet 26 times. It was also subjected to high and low temperature tests.

The world's third largest smartphone maker, Huawei, is planning to release a folding smartphone early 2019, beating Samsung, Japanese publication Nikkei reported, citing sources.

Shenzhen-based Huawei tapped Chinese compatriot BOE Technology group for the flexible displays, Nikkei said.

Huawei is expected to announce a successor to its Mate series smartphones before the end of the year.
