MANILA--A magnitude-6.2 earthquake jolted Batanes past midnight Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The tectonic tremor occurred at 12:44 p.m., some 16 kilometers east of Basco town. It struck at a depth of 174 kilometers.

The Phivolcs said the quake is expected to cause aftershocks but no damage is expected.
