In red, green, blue: De La Salle University shows support for ABS-CBN

MANILA - De La Salle University on Tuesday showed support to ABS-CBN Corp., hours after the broadcast giant was ordered by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to shut down its TV and radio operations.

In Facebook and Twitters posts, the facade of the university's Manila campus is seen lighted up in red, green and blue, which are the signature colors of ABS-CBN.

"In solidarity with ABS-CBN, its employees, and the millions of Filipinos who depend on the broadcast network for news and information, De La Salle University lights up the iconic St. La Salle Hall in the colors of the company to appeal to the National Telecommunications Commission to grant provisional authority for the continued operation of the network," it said.


The NTC earlier in the day ordered ABS-CBN to “cease and desist” its TV and radio broadcast operations, one day after the company’s 25-year operating franchise expired.

The agency said the network must stop its broadcast operations "due to the expiration of its congressional franchise" on May 4. 

It said the network should "stop operating its various TV and radio broadcasting stations nationwide 'absent a valid Congressional Franchise as required by law'."

ABS-CBN Corp., which employs around 11,000 workers, was given 10 days from receipt of the order "to respond as to why the frequencies assigned to it should not be recalled."

ABS-CBN Corp. stopped its broadcast operations Tuesday night in compliance with the NTC order.

In a statement, the country's largest media network cited how the order was issued despite earlier legislative resolutions assuring the issuance of a provisional authority pending the renewal of its broadcast license. 

Several bills for the renewal of its franchise, which lapsed Monday, are pending at the House of Representatives. 

The NTC order covers 42 television stations across the country, including the flagship Channel 2, 10 digital broadcast channels, 18 FM stations and 5 AM stations, including DZMM radio.

Ateneo, La Salle team up in battle against COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines -- After figuring in numerous wars in the UAAP, archrivals Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University are teaming up to fight a common enemy in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Society of Jesus and the De La Salle Brothers have joined forces to raise funds for the vulnerable communities affected by the enhanced community quarantine in a campaign called "Let's Work Together To Fight COVID-19."

Even before this collaborative effort, Ateneo and La Salle have done their part in helping the country during the crisis.

La Salle, together with the Arnold Janssen Kalinga Center, opened the doors of the Razon Sports Complex and the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde's covered courts to the homeless of Manila, providing them with shelter and food.

Ateneo, meanwhile, opened its dormitories to medical frontliners.

"I appreciated the shelters, so the first thing that crossed my mind was to help," said Philippine Jesuit Provincial Fr. Jun Viray, SJ. "The Ateneo alumni, those in business, said they'd like to help."

"I told them, 'Let's raise money together with our friends -- which means also La Salle friends'," he added.

"A little conversation between myself and Father Jun created a spark that is more explosive than UAAP that allowed us to say, maybe this is the time to work together rather than compete," said DLSU president Bro. Armin Luistro, FSC.

As of April 15, their initiative has raised P10,000,000 that will feed almost 500 homeless individuals and 6,000 urban poor families.

La Salle lights up blue after UAAP loss to Ateneo

After suffering a loss to their arch rival Ateneo de Manila University, the De La Salle University community showed graciousness in defeat last night, as it lit the facade of the university’s iconic St. La Salle Hall blue.

The Green Archers suffered a heartbreaking loss in the men’s basketball tournament to their rivals, who snatched from them what would have been their second successive title.

In a remarkably well-fought game that featured seven deadlocks and seven lead changes, the Blue Eagles fended off the Green Archers, 88-86, in the do-or-die Game 3 of the best-of-three finals to dethrone their rivals and annex the UAAP crown.

It was Ateneo’s first UAAP title since Season 75, when they won the last of five consecutive championships.

The act of sportsmanship was seen in a photo shared on Facebook by The LaSallian, the university’s paper.

After space trip, Pinoy astronaut wants to give back

MANILA – Crossfit coach Chino Roque is excited to be the first Filipino to fly into space.

The De La Salle University Manila graduate said he has been preparing for his one-hour space flight, even if it is still months away.

“I believe in preparations, so right before I go to Florida again for some training, I’m going to continue my crossfit training. I guess that’s going to prepare my body for most of the exercises,” he said in an interview on “Mornings@ANC” on Wednesday.

“Space camp was the best for me, really. And after that will be the actual space tour, so I’m really psyched for that,” he added.

Thankful for being given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Roque said he plans to focus on “giving back” after his journey to space.

Specifically, he wants to utilize his skills by training more kids in sports, and older people in crossfit.

“What I have now in store for me would be just trying to find ways to give back. Again, I couldn’t be more thankful to everyone who supported me along the way,” he said.

“Right now, I’m just focusing on finding little ways to give back, maybe coaching small children again in football, giving time to teach crossfit,” he added.

Asked what he plans to do during his brief stay in outer space, Roque said: “Embracing the moment is what matters to me the most, since I guess if I take too much selfies, I won’t have much time to just enjoy it.”

No giving up

Recalling the recently held space camp in Florida where he and two other Filipinos competed for a slot for a trip to space, Roque said they had to go through a series of tasks that challenged both their minds and bodies.

“It always starts out early in the morning, so most of us would be awake from 4 a.m. just trying to get ready for the exercises for that given day,” he said. “There was a military assault course where we had to go through a series of challenging obstacles… there are hurdles, jump ropes, pushups and situps, wall climbs and ziplines. It was fun.”

“They (judges) wanted to know if you’re in condition to perform tasks under pressure,” he added. “So there was one task, after you do a set of burpees, you have to shoot three targets out of nine.”

When asked why he thinks he was chosen over his older competitors, Roque said: “I don’t think there would be an advantage or disadvantage since everyone has his own strengths and weaknesses. But I think for me what separated me from most of the candidates was that I never gave up.”

“Like in most exercises, I just tried to find the fun in it. For example, I was put in a centrifuge where we were spun… I still tried to find fun in it, doing poses inside the chamber. I guess the judges saw that, they saw I was just chilling out, just having fun and helping other people out.”

Roque replaced Lt. Mario Mendoza in the Axe Apollo National Challenge after the Air Force pilot dropped out due to conflicts in schedule.

The two others include original space race winner Evan Rey Datuin, and Ramil Santos, who was the winner of Axe’s electronic raffle.

Roque said he plans to contact Mendoza soon.

“I’m still finding that time to call Lt. Mario Mendoza [to thank him],” he said. “I’m very thankful to God, this is a wonderful experience.”

La Salle closes out series, nabs UAAP crown

MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University (DLSU) took its first UAAP crown since 2007 by beating University of Sto. Tomas, 71-69, in Game 3 of the men's basketball finals.

After trailing the Tigers in the first two quarters, the Archers mounted a comeback in the second half to clinch the game.

Jeron Teng, Arnold Van Opstal and Arnold Vosotros led the way for La Salle.

The last time La Salle won the title was when it swept University of the East in the 2007 finals.

The Archers' victory also foiled the Tigers' attempt to become the first fourth-seeded team to win the UAAP men's title.

UST takes halftime lead over La Salle

MANILA, Philippines -- University of Sto. Tomas is enjoying a 32-24 halftime lead over De La Salle University (DLSU) in Game 3 of the UAAP Finals.

Jeron Teng and Arnold Van Opstal opened the game with a 14-10 lead for the Archers.

But Kevin Ferrer's triple started a run for UST, which took an 18-16 advantage going into the second quarter.

Jason Perkins and Almond Vosotros were able to pull La Salle within 22-21 midway the quarter.

Jeric Teng then retaliated with back-to-back triples to keep UST ahead, 28-21.

UST and La Salle eye to break the 1-1 series deadlock for the UAAP crown.

DLSU wins bid for Bonifacio lot

Manila, Philippines - De La Salle University is heading to Bonifacio Global City.

Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) on Saturday said it awarded the last remaining vacant lot at the Institutional Area of Bonifacio Global City (BGC) to lone bidder DLSU.

"We welcome De La Salle University to the Bonifacio Global City and we are confident that the presence of De La Salle, one of the country’s prestigious universities, will play a major role in affirming the BGC as not just as a premier business, commercial and residential area but a premier institutional area as well,” BCDA president Arnel Casanova said.

De La Salle will pay an annual lease of P3.948 million for the 1,395 square-meter property. This will be subject to an annual escalation of 5% starting on the second year.

Upon signing of the contract, BCDA said DLSU will immediately remit an advance payment equivalent to the annual lease for the first four years with an annual escalation of 5%.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines will benefit from the deal, since 50% of the lease remittances will go to the AFP Modernization Program.

At present, the University of the Philippines also has a lot in the institutional area of BGC where it plans to put up a satellite campus called UP Professional Schools and offer post-graduate courses in Law, Business Administration, Statistics, Engineering and Architecture.

UE climbs from behind to beat La Salle

The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors climbed from behind to defeat the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers, 85-83, on Saturday's Season 76 UAAP men's basketball at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The game was close in the first two quarters, with La Salle maintaining a slim 4-point lead, 43-39, heading into halftime.

La Salle threatened to pull away at the start of the fourth by extending its lead to 10, 68-58, with 8 minutes to go in the ballgame.

But turnovers and cold shooting from the Green Archers allowed UE to trim the lead.

Five straight points by Roi Sumang tied the game at 73 with over 3 minutes left in the game.

The Green Archers then took a 4-point lead with over a minute left, 81-77, but another 5-0 run capped off by a three-pointer by Ralf Olivarez shifted the lead back to the Red Warriors.

With the Red Warriors holding on to a 3-point lead, La Salle’s Luigi dela Paz hit a long two-pointer with only 17 seconds left.

Olivarez was then fouled and split his charities to give UE an 85-83 lead.

The Green Archers had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but Thomas Torres missed a floater in the lane.

Sumang led the Red Warriors with 21 points. Charles Mammie and Olivarez chipped in with 19 points and 8 points, respectively.

Almond Vosotros scored a career-high 26 points in a losing effort.

La Salle suffered its second straight loss despite having a double digit advantage in the final quarter.

In its last game against the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws, La Salle had a 13-point advantage before squandering it and eventually lose in overtime.

La Salle fell to its third loss in five games while UE improved its record to 3-3.

Gumabao wants Gerald Anderson as onscreen partner

MANILA, Philippines – If she were to enter show business and choose her onscreen partner, La Salle’s Michelle Gumabao said she would pick Gerald Anderson.

This was her reply when she was grilled on the “Ihaw Na!” segment of the late night gag show "Banana Lite" on Wednesday.

“Sabihin na nating pinili mong maging artista, sino sa mga male artist ang gusto mong makatrabaho?” asked Jason Gainza, who was impersonating Boy Abunda.

“[Si] Gerald Anderson po,” responded the 20-year-old beauty, who admitted that she had a crush on Anderson, now currently linked with actress Maja Salvador.

“Dati naging crush ko s'ya dahil sa accent n'ya ‘pag nagta-Tagalog s'ya,” she said of the Filipino-American actor.

Gumabao, whose defensive skills helped De La Salle University sweep Ateneo in the recent UAAP women’s volleyball finals, is the daughter of former basketball player and actor Dennis Roldan.

Her brother Marco, meanwhile, stars in ABS-CBN’s teen series "Luv U."

Gumabao admitted she is open to joining show business once she finishes her studies.

“Tingin ko everyone's open to it, I'm personally open to it. I'm not shutting down my door to showbiz,” she said earlier. “If may offer, I'm going to think about it talaga.”
