‘Idol PH’ finalist comes out as gay to his fans: ‘Irresponsible it is for me to stay silent’

MANILA — Miguel Odron, one of the top five finalists of the first season of “Idol Philippines,” came out as gay to his fans on Tuesday.

The singer took to Instagram on the last day of Pride Month to share his truth and apologized to those who might “feel hurt” or “feel lied to” because of his announcement.

MY COMING OUT STORY. I’ve never had to come out in my life. My mom just knew. In college, I fell in love with a boy and brought him home, and that was that. No questions asked. The news spread in my family, so I never really got to experience that big coming out moment. Until now I guess. When I joined Idol Philippines, I made a conscious choice with the producers of the show not to address my sexuality. To be clear, I’ve never been ashamed of being gay. Everybody in my close circle knows and accepts me and anybody who doesnt is no longer in that circle. Star Music has known from the start and they have always supported and loved me for who I am. I made that choice on Idol not because I wanted to present a fake version of myself to all of you, but because I wanted your focus to be on my voice, my music and my writing. These are the things I truly value about myself. Being gay is as interesting to me as the number of hairs on my head or the size of my feet. I thought it would just be a distraction from the music. As I release more songs, Im finding it harder and harder to stay quiet about this. My music is very autobiographical. A few of you have picked up on the little hints and have asked me questions. It makes me happy to know you guys are really picking apart the words I wrote, but its also made me realize how irresponsible it is for me to stay silent about this. I’ve tried to live with radical authenticity for most of my adult life, and to have suddenly put myself in a closet I was never in is a really weird experience. A lot of you have already figured it out and I see your cheeky messages in my DMs 😂 If youve supported me and you feel hurt reading this or you feel lied to, I am sorry that you feel this way and I am still so thankful for the support all of you have given. I wanna make it clear that I never lied about my sexuality, I never pretended to be straight. I chose to stay quiet about a very small but very personal part of me. I am still the same person. It would be a nightmare for any of you to listen to my songs with a “Miguel is gay” lens. My songs are meant to be mirrors to your own experiences, and I hope it stays that way. Gue 🌻

He wrote that he decided to keep it a secret, particularly during the time he wast first introduced on “Idol Philippines,” because he wanted people to focus on his voice, but is now ready to celebrate his sexuality as he hopes to be an inspiration for others.

“I made that choice on ‘Idol’ not because I wanted to present a fake version of myself to all of you, but because I wanted your focus to be on my voice, my music and my writing,” Odron explained. “These are the things I truly value about myself. Being gay is as interesting to me as the number of hairs on my head or the size of my feet. I thought it would just be a distraction from the music.”

Continuing his post on embracing being gay, he said: “As I release more songs, I’m finding it harder and harder to stay quiet about this [as] my music is very autobiographical.”

“A few of you have picked up on the little hints and have asked me questions. It makes me happy to know you guys are really picking apart the words I wrote, but it also made me realize how irresponsible it is for me to stay silent about this.”

He went on to apologize to his fans who might feel offended, but made it clear that he “never lied” about it.

“I never pretended to be straight. I chose to stay quiet about a very small but very personal part of me,” he said, before concluding with a hope that his supporters would continue to listen to his music, even after coming as gay.

Odron is signed with Star Music, and earlier this year released his first single with the ABS-CBN label, titled "Chevy Cruze."

Daniel Padilla's brother launches music career

MANILA – Another member of the Padilla family has joined the entertainment industry.

On Tuesday, JC Padilla, the younger brother of the Daniel Padilla, was launched by ABS-CBN’s Star Music as one of its new artists who is part of the album “OPM Fresh.”

But unlike his brother, JC told ABS-CBN News in an interview that he only intends to pursue a music career. “Singer lang forever,” he said.

JC is the son of Karla Estrada with Pearl of the Orient vocalist Naldy Padilla.

Although Daniel also sings, JC pointed out that their singing styles are actually different.

“Siguro masabi ko lang na difference namin -- hindi ko naman nilalayo 'yung boses ko and hindi ko rin naman ginagaya ['yung boses niya]. Pero siguro [magkaiba] talaga 'yung style,” he said. “Husky ng boses ko. Mas clean kay kuya. Mas pang-pop ang boses niya.”

Asked if he sought any advice from Daniel or his mother, JC said: “Bilin nila na i-enjoy ko lang 'yung blessings na dumadating sa akin and stay humble.”

JC said he will do his best to make a name for himself and use his brother as his inspiration, adding that he just feels blessed to be given an opportunity like this.

“Napakasaya ko po kasi first time ko ito pero sobrang nerbyos kasi first time ko din mag press conference. Sobrang saya na may halong kaba pero enjoy naman,” he said.
