Bb. Pilipinas USA crowned at star-studded event
LAKEWOOD, California - It was a night of pageantry as 20 young women competed for the title of the first ever Bb. Pilipinas USA.
Winners would not only get cash prizes, trips to the Philippines, movie and television roles, but also a shot to compete in the Bb. Pilipinas Universe and Miss Earth Philippines pageants.
Twenty-three year old Geramie Dizon, a marketing employee, was crowned Bb. Pilipinas USA.
"It feels amazing. I'm so happy! Thank you so much," Dizon said.
Many more awards were given out including one award named after The Filipino Channel, the Bb. TFC.
"I'm so honored for this opportunity. I love TFC. Their shows are hilarious and it really is an immense honor to be Bb. TFC," said Bb. TFC Alexandra Dreschler.
The ladies underwent some pre-pageant festivities throughout the weeks leading to the coronation, including a week of training with 2010 Miss Universe 4th runner up Venus Raj, who hosted the pageant with Adobo Nation's Lee Robin Salazar.
"Siguro, sa mga gusto pumunta sa Pilipinas and join Bb. Pilipinas in the Philippines, maybe just like what they did here just be themselves and enjoy the entire pageant kasi ang bilis-bilis ng pace ng pageant," she said.
The ladies had to strut their stuff in front of a panel of celebrity judges, including Sony Vice President Fritz Friedman, Emmy-nominated TV Producer Marc Nicolas, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau's Gel Santos Relos.
Fresh off his stint as judge and mentor on The Voice Philippines, Apl.de.Ap not only judged and performed, but his Apl.de.Ap Foundation was also the recipient of the pageant's fundraising efforts.
"I'm glad I'm meeting so many people that have the same values in helping out the community and the children in the Philippines," the recording artist said.
The full pageant will air next month on TFC.

Daiana Menezes agrees to televise breast surgery
MANILA, Philippines -- Tired of being a "walking Photoshop," Brazilian model Daiana Menezes had her breast enhanced last month.
"No regrets, " said Menezes about the procedure which she claimed also enhanced her physical sensitivity.
The host-model showed off her new figure at a pictorial for cosmetic surgeon Dr. Vicki Belo.
She also agreed to videotape the breast operation where silicon implants where placed under her breast muscles. It will be one of the highlights of Belo's upcoming show for The Filipino Channel (TFC).
Amid health issues, Menezes said she is not actively promoting the procedure but maintained that this is a medical choice and part of fulfilling her rights as a woman.
At the pictorial, media also quizzed Menezes about her dazzling diamond engagement ring given by outgoing Cagayan de Oro Congressman Jose Benjamin Benaldo.
How many carats? "Four," she sheepishly responded.
The couple is expected to tie the knot this year.

Lea weighs in on Ricky Lo interview with Hathaway
MANILA, Philippines – Tony Award winner Lea Salonga weighed in on the much talked about interview of entertainment editor Ricky Lo with “Les Miserables” actress Anne Hathaway.
While saying she cannot speak for Hathaway, Salonga explained that based on her own experience during press junkets, she has been trained “to expect all kinds of questions, ranging from broadsheet to tabloid, so I try to keep my answers creative.”
“You get a lot of the same questions, and by the end of the day, the brain is so… for lack of a better word, ‘bangag,’” she told journalist Alexy Vergara which was published in his personal blog, In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning.
In Lo’s interview with Hathaway, the entertainment columnist asked the actress about her weight loss for the movie: "You lost 25 pounds for Fantine. How did you do it, and how did you gain it back?"
At first laughing, Hathaway said, "I'd rather not talk about the weight loss, please."
Lo also asked her, "For somebody who is perceived to live a life of luxury and privilege, how are you able to identify with Fantine? Have you ever experience to be hungry, be poor... just like the character?"
To which Hathaway answered, "That's a very personal question."
As an actress, Salonga said her job is “to remain professional and pleasant, as I need that reporter to write about and talk about my show, or TV stint, or movie, or whatever.”
“Everyone sees things from his or her own unique perspective. But I can think of a bazillion ways to answer the question, ‘How did you lose 25 pounds in 5 weeks,’ if only for the benefit of entertaining myself,” Salonga added.
In Lo’s interview, Hathaway was all praises for Salonga, who played Fantine on Broadway, saying she adores the Filipina singer and she hopes to meet her one day.
Later in the interview, Lo asked Hathaway again on what she would want to tell Salonga. Hathaway pleasantly declined: "We've already talked about Lea."
This led some netizens to view that interview as "awkward" and "painful to watch."
But Salonga noted that interviews are also about how questions are asked.
Citing The Filipino Channel’s resident film critic Manny the Movie Guy’s interview with Hathaway, Salonga said his delivery “totally relaxed and lightened the atmosphere.”

TFC, OMB team up for global anti-piracy campaign
REDWOOD CITY, California – “Piracy is wrong.” No ifs and buts about it.
Philippine Optical Media Board (OMB) chairman Ronnie Ricketts explained it in simple terms: “Since we were students, we’ve been taught not to copy what is not ours – quiz and homework answers, ideas, projects and the like. That is essentially what piracy is – copying what is not yours. In school, we call that cheating. In life, we call it stealing. It is plainly and simply morally wrong. It also happens to be illegal.”
OMB recently partnered with ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel (TFC) for an awareness campaign on anti-piracy.
Aligning with Ricketts’ battlecry of “Bawal Kumopya” (literally translated as “Copying is prohibited”), TFC tapped the cast of its top-rating primetime teleserye, “Walang Hanggan,” who willingly gave their time and effort to the production of the “Bawal Kumopya” public service announcement.
Actors Coco Martin, Richard Gomez, Dawn Zulueta, Julia Montes, Paulo Avelino and Joem Bascon all joined hands (and crossed their arms) in a united front for the war against piracy.
The “Bawal Kumopya” PSA was launched at the One Kapamilya Go sa California’s Great America held last September 16. Before 10,000 people, the video was unveiled, with "Adobo Nation" co-host Lee Robin Salazar and WBC Latino flyweight and super flyweight champion Glenn Donaire with his family and management introducing the campaign and enjoining all to remember the campaign’s battlecry.
The campaign launch, the PSA and “Bawal Kumopya” t-shirts were huge hits at the event. The campaign has aired globally on TFC and will be rolled out in various TFC events around the world.
The OMB, which replaced the Videogram Regulatory Board, is responsible in regulating the manufacture of optical media in all its forms and has the power to slap stiffer fines and penalties to those who illegally reproduce those products.
Since Ricketts took office as the new head of OMB in 2009 under the Office of the President, he has achieved several key milestones in the battle against piracy. This includes what was previously described as impossible: seizing in 2011 all copies of pirated videos on sale on the streets of Quiapo and Sta. Cruz – the symbolic piracy hub of the Philippines.
In partnership with Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, they proved that fighting film and video piracy is a winnable war if national and local government officials have the political will to end it.
Another major achievement under Ricketts’ leadership is zero piracy of films showcased at the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), a Christmas season tradition that families had enjoyed and contributed financially to the benefit of the Filipino film industry.
Since 2009, he has accomplished a piracy-free film festival which resulted to robust theater attendance and ticket sales for the festival.
Ricketts was lauded by the film industry, receiving the FPJ Memorial Award from the Film Academy for Movie Arts & Sciences (FAMAS) in recognition for his efforts. He has also been assigned a star in the Walk of Fame in Eastwood City.
This strong leadership and resolute commitment to eradicate piracy and, in effect, help the economy and the film industry, inspired the ABS-CBN TFC management of to assist the efforts of Ricketts and bring his message to Filipinos overseas.
In a related development, on September 14, ABS-CBN Corp. and Star Cinema filed with the Philippine Department of Justice the complaints for copyright infringement against Ogie Villamil as owner and operator of www.nabimovie.com.
The National Bureau of Investigation’s Computer Crimes Unit raided Villamil’s internet shop and residence in San Fernando, La Union province last July for alleged copyright infringement, specifically copying illegally, recording and uploading online for public viewing mostly TV programs and films from media network ABS-CBN Corporation and its subsidiary, ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc.

TFC, CFO ink pact to benefit OFWs
MANILA, Philippines - A memorandum of agreement was signed between The Filipino Channel (TFC) and the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) which aims to solidify the ties of overseas Pinoy workers to the Philippines.
“As the largest communications network that pioneered in providing up-to-date information on the Philippines and its diaspora communities, our decision to link up with the Commission on Filipinos Overseas is a strategic move,” said Raffy Lopez, chief operating officer of ABS-CBN Global Ltd.
In his speech, Lopez said, “Together, we hope to equip them for a life far different from their lives in the Philippines, guide them in their journey and to continue to be their pillar of strength as they trudge the unsteady, early stages of life as an overseas Filipino. In all these, CFO and TFC have found specific ways to bring our efforts together”.
For her part, CFO Secretary Imelda Nicolas said the agreement with TFC is a result of both parties "collective desire to provide good governance to the Filipino people, where ever they may be".
“With TFC, the overseas Filipino community feels closer to home and is updated on what is happening in the Philippines and hopefully will be informed about the programs and activities the Philippine government is undertaking especially through our agency,” she said.
Nicolas added that TFC captured migrants' post arrival anxieties, job search experiences, bouts of loneliness and eventual adjustments in vignettes entitled, "Ako ang TFC". The video clips aim to show the reality that beset migrants, as well as how TFC can help ease their resettlement concerns.
"These will also make Pre-Departure Orientation Seminars more realistic since these are authentic accounts from Canada, Australia, the United States and other destinations under the TFC umbrella,” said the CFO Secretary.
The joint efforts will increase the promotion and protection of the welfare of overseas Filipinos.
“The information that will reach our constituencies shall get more people involved and inspired and will strengthen the “bayanihan spirit” among our more than nine million overseas Filipinos,” Nicolas said.
