Cliff Avril getting bad 'vibe' from Lions, report says

The Detroit Lions could be content to allow Monday's deadline to pass without signing defensive end Cliff Avril to a new contract.

Avril, the Lions' top defensive lineman last season, told the Detroit Free Press he's still waiting for more progress toward a deal.

“I’m hopeful, but I don’t know,” Avril told the Free Press. “I’m not getting a good vibe, let’s put it that way. But I’m hopeful.”

What happens of nothing changes before Monday?

“I haven’t talked to my agent past that point, honestly,” Avril told the newspaper. “If we don’t get a deal done I’ll fly out to New York and figure something out from that point on.”

Avril was designated as the Lions' franchise player after posting a team-high 11 sacks last season. While holding out during training camp is an option, Avril reportedly indicated he plans to play in 2012 for the $10.6-million tender.
