The most successful variety show on Philippine television now speaks Bahasa Indonesia.
The Indonesian franchise of “Eat Bulaga!” premiered on Monday on Jakarta’s Surya Citra Televisi network, carrying the name of the noontime program that has entertained Filipino households for almost 33 years.
Although the franchise airs daily at 4p.m., Indonesia’s “Eat Bulaga!” has a similar format with at least four familiar segments: “Indonesia Pintar” (“Pinoy Henyo”), “One For All, All For One,” “Bolagaan,” and “Karaoke Stud”.
The personality of the hosts is also patterned after the original. “Bossing” Vic Sotto, for instance, has a counterpart in Uya Kuya, who is called “Boss Uya”.
The other hosts who make up the “dabarkads”, translated as “bulagang”, are Aja Farid, Reza No, Ramzi, Narji, Ciripa, Rian Ibram, Rio Indrawan, Steven, Leo Consul, Selena Alexandria, Jenny Tan, Bianca Lizza, and Julie Christie.
The franchise is the result of a deal between SCTV and TAPE, Inc., the production company behind the Filipino show, which will celebrate its 33rd anniversary at the end of the month.
