Robbery and shooting at Pasay City mall disrupts train operations

A pawnshop robbery at a Pasay City mall that was accompanied by gunfire temporarily affected train operations in the area on Thursday afternoon.

Chief Superintendent Benito Estipona, Southern Police District director, said four members of the "Martilyo Gang" robbed a pawnshop inside the Metropoint Mall at the corner of Taft and EDSA, carting away a still undetermined amount of jewelry.

Atty. Hernan Cabrera, spokesman of the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), said a shooting incident inside the Metropoint Mall caused panic among civilians, causing them to run towards the train station.

Estipona said the gunshots were fired by the robbers, who fired in the air to cause panic and cover their escape.

This forced the station to temporarily prevent the entry and exit of people in the area at about 3:30 p.m.

Hoever, the LRT1 line resumed operations soon after.

The Metro Rail Transit also suspended operations at its Taft station, which intersects the LRT line at the Metropoint area, as passengers and civilians in the area sought shelter inside the station.

The MRT3 resumed operations from Taft at 4:16 p.m.

Estipona said police are still conducting clearing operations inside the mall.
