'Donut Gang' shoots guard in Robinsons mall

Suspected members of the “Donut Gang," a group that steals spare tires of parked vehicles, were involved in a shootout with a security guard of Robinsons Magnolia along Aurora Blvd. in Quezon City on Wednesday.

Initial reports said 2 suspects onboard a green Mitsubishi Adventure allegedly opened fire at the mall’s security guard when they tried to escape from the mall’s basement parking.

“Allegedly, sinita ng gwardiya tapos nagpaputok ‘yung sakay ng vehicle na involved, doon na gumanti ng putok ‘yung gwardiya,” PO2 Ronnie Erenio of Quezon City Police District Station 7 told dzMM.

A certain Albert Alvarez said he alerted police after he saw the 2 unidentified suspects dismantling the spare tire of his vehicle.

The suspects immediately escaped after engaging in a shootout, but had to abandon their vehicle due to a flat tire.

Their vehicle and Alvarez’s spare tire were recovered along N. Domingo and Valencia.

The suspects, however, remain at large.

Police also recovered 2 slugs of a 9mm firearm and 3 shotgun slugs from the guard’s service firearm at the scene.

The security guard was not injured in the incident.

Investigations were still ongoing as of posting.

The management of Robinsons Mall, meanwhile, said they are closely working with the PNP in the investigation.

“An incident involving a spare tire stolen from a vehicle parked in the mall's basement parking area, transpired at 2:15 pm today. We have turned this matter over to the PNP and we are working closely with them for the investigation.

"Management will continue to coordinate closely with the authorities to prevent such incidents from happening in the future,” the mall’s management said in a statement. -- Reports from Robert Mano, dzMM; Jenny Reyes, ABS-CBN News
