UP students top Google online advertising competition

 
MANILA -- A team from the University of the Philippines won the top prize in Google's Online Marketing Challenge (GOMC).

The global winning team, under Professor James Ryan Jonas, is composed of Jeanina Melissa K. Tee, Martin Joseph Alexandre R. Gonzaga, Wesley Paul S. Cortez, Francis Louie M. Karunungan, Nigel Willamson T. Lee and Erika Kathleen A. Uy.

The group bagged the top prize for its online marketing campaign with "Sun Cruises Philippines," a local company which specializes in providing ferry and tour services to Corregidor Island.

Meanwhile, another team from the Philippines, composed of students from the Asian Institute of Management, was declared Asia Pacific Winner in the GOMC for their work with the India-based company "Happily Unmarried," which specializes in selling lifestyle products.

The group, led by Professor David Gulliver Go, is composed of Kaushal Pilikuli, Madhu Konanur Venkataram, Sangamesh Desai, Matthew Chua and Pratik Piyush.

Over 12,000 students from 80 countries joined the GOMC, which is now in its sixth year.

For the contest, Google limited the participants to a budget of US $250 and a period of three weeks to create an online marketing campaign for a local business using Google AdWords and Google+.
