PETA, Tanghalang Pilipino lead Gawad Buhay citations

MANILA -- Stage offerings of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) and Tanghalang Pilipino led the first round of citations of the 2013 Gawad Buhay unveiled Friday.

Tanghalang Pilipino's "Ibalong," a dance-musical which reimagines the Bicolano epic, nabbed 15 citations in both the performance and technical categories.

These include nods in top categories such as outstanding original musical, outstanding ensemble performance for a musical, stage direction for Tuxqs Rutaquio, and adaptation or translation for Rody Vera.

Meanwhile, PETA's "D'Wonder Twins of Boac," an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" set in 1960s Philippines, got 14 citations.

Among others, "Boac" got nods in the following categories: female lead performance in a musical for Cris Villonco, female featured performance in a musical for Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino and Gail Billones, and and male featured performance in a musical for Lao Rodriguez.

Trailing "Ibalong" and "Boac" in number of citations are Ballet Philippines' "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with 11; and 9 Works Theatrical's "They're Playing Our Song" and Actor's Actors Inc.'s "Red" with eight each.

From the citations given quarterly, the jury of the Philstage Awards for the Performing Arts will select the nominees for this year's Gawad Buhay, whose awarding ceremony will be held in early 2014.
