Pinoy designers shine on Emmy red carpet

LOS ANGELES – Hollywood stars turned up for TV’s biggest night, the Primetime Emmy Awards, on Sunday (Monday in Manila) with some of them walking the red carpet in gowns created by Filipino designers.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won the best comedy actress Emmy for the second year in a row for her role as hapless U.S. Vice President Selina Meyer on HBO's "Veep," wore a gown by Monique Lhuillier, described by Reuters as a “strapless shimmering number.”

The Agence France-Presse, meanwhile, noted that the actress “glittered” in the pale textured column gown.

Also wearing a Lhuillier creation was actress Anna Faris from the CBS sitcom "Mom," who was a presenter at the awards.

Another Filipino designer, Oliver Tolentino, also triumped on the Emmy red carpet because, for the first time, two nominees wore his creations to the annual awards gathering.

Mayim Bialik, a best comedy supporting actress nominee for “The Big Bang Theory,” wore a green gown by Tolentino.

"He's amazing. His attention to detail; he's got an incredible flexible personality. It's been wonderful," Bialik said of the Filipino.

Filipino-American dancer Allison Holker, who was nominated for best choreographer for her work on “Dancing with the Stars,” also wore a Tolentino couture gown.

“I'm wearing Oliver Tolentino, which I absolutely love. His stuff is so beautiful. I think he makes women look so feminine," she said.

Tolentino said he was pleased that the two celebrities liked his creations.

“Masarap ang pakiramdam. Kasi alam mo ang process ng paggawa ng damit, hindi ganun kadali. It took us almost like three to four months' preparation for the Emmys," he said.
