Heavy beating leads to Dos Santos suspension after UFC 166
MANILA – Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos of Brazil has been handed an indefinite medical suspension after sustaining a heavy beating at the hands of Cain Velasquez in the main event of UFC 166 last week.
MMA Junkie reported that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversaw the fight card, has suspended Dos Santos indefinitely, “pending clearance from an ear, nose and throat doctor.”
Dos Santos, challenging Velasquez for the heavyweight belt, was thoroughly overwhelmed by the heavyweight champion and lost via a fifth round technical knockout. He left the Octagon with his left eye nearly closed.
Fox Sports reported that Dos Santos received 11 stitches following the fight – seven above his eye, three in his ear and one in his lip.
He has since returned to Brazil.
Shawn Jordan, who was knocked out by Gabriel Gonzaga in the first round of their heavyweight fight, was also given an indefinite medical suspension and will need clearance from an ear, nose and throat doctor as well.
Tim Boetsch, who fought in the undercard, was also suspended pending clearance from an ophthalmologist.
Velasquez, despite his triumph in the main event, was not spared. He has been suspended until April 18 due to a possible broken jaw.
Lightweight fighters Gilbert Melendez and Diego Sanchez also received medical suspensions after a grueling three-round showdown that is considered the front-runner for Fight of the Year honors.
Melendez, who won via unanimous decision, is suspended until November 19. Sanchez, meanwhile, has been suspended until January 18.
All the other fighters in the card received, at least, a seven-day suspension.
