Fil-Norwegian skater sneaks into medal round


MANILA, Philippines – Filipina-Norwegian figure skater Anne Line Gjersem sneaked into the medal round of the women’s figure skating competition in the 2014 Winter Olympics, placing 24th out of 30 contestants in the short program.

The 20-year-old Gjersem, whose mother hails from Isabela, garnered a score of 48.56 to become the last competitor to qualify to the free skate program.

She received a score of 26.13 on technical elements and 22.43 on program components to edge Jenna McCorkell of Great Britain (48.34) for the final spot.

Defending champion Kim Yuna of South Korea topped the short program event with a total segment score of 74.92, followed by Russia’s Adelina Sotnikova with 74.64.

The free skate program will take place Thursday night at 11 p.m., with Gjersem skating fifth.
