It was his dissatisfaction with the blogging tools back in 2003 that he decided to create the free and open-source software that would become WordPress.
WordPress, now the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world,
currently powers 22 percent of websites around the world, and continues to grow.
While interest in blogging may have dipped for a while with the rise of Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook, Mullenweg happily notes that blogging is back on the rise.
"It's coming back... People always like things that are new and shiny, but ultimately they return to substance, Blogging is really about substance. It's the most rewarding thing," he told ABS-CBNnews.com.
Mullenweg, who is also CEO of Automattic the company behind WordPress.com among others, has been blogging for 12 years now. His blog is http://ma.tt/.
"When I look back, the blog posts are very meaningful, they can help transport me to my state of mind and what I was feeling at that time... It's a very sacred act, you open yourself up when you write. Some of my best friends in the world, I met through blogging," he said.
Mullenweg, who was in Manila for a WordPress community meet-up on Monday, offered some tips for WordPress bloggers on how they can increase traffic to their blogs.
1. Install the JetPack plugin.
"That's the plugin we have that is connected to social networks, gives you better stats, allows people to subscribe via email. It allows more people to be connected to the site."
2. Update frequently.
"This is super important. I think that's probably the number one tip."
3. Keep your site clean.
"Especially when you're growing your audience, try to keep your site very clean. Not too many ads. Focus on growing your audience rather than just making a few dollars on ads that take half the screen. It kind of cheapens the experience. Maybe you can do that down the line, but when you're growing, try to keep it clean."
