Bamboo's new recruit hopes to prove bullies wrong

MANILA – A 13-year-old girl is hoping to prove bullies wrong after she managed to turn the chair of rocker Bamboo Mañalac during the Blind Auditions of "The Voice Kids" on Sunday.

Before her performance, Edray Leona Teodoro couldn't contain her tears as she recalled some of her schoolmates calling her names.

Asked what her schoolmates call her, she said: "Mataba po."

But after performing an upbeat rendition of the song "Killing Me Softly," all singer Sarah Geronimo could say was, "Ang ganda naman ng boses mo."

"The reason kaya lang di ako umikot ay dahil meron lang akong ibang hinahanap," she added.

Lea Salonga, meanwhile, thinks Mañalac will be the perfect coach for Teodoro.

"May mga songs na di masyadong kailangan dagdagan pa ng kahit anong eklat-eklat, walang sobrang anything, and the man to my left (Mañalac) will teach you a lot about that," she said.

Bamboo, who was impressed with Teodoro's voice, agreed with Salonga's comments, saying he will teach the 13-year-old how to "keep it simple" for the people to hear the "nice voice" she has.

Teodoro, whose dream is to become a professional singer-performer, said she joined "The Voice Kids" to gain confidence and to show her school bullies that there's more to her than meets the eye.

"Kaya po ako sumali sa 'The Voice' ay para mabigyan ko pa po ng more confidence ang sarili ko at para po masabi rin nila na 'hindi lang pala ganyan 'yan,'" she said.
