Pinoy dancer hopes to elevate image of pole dancing

NEW YORK – Filipino-American Rommel O'Choa is hoping to change the way people look at pole dancers.

O'Choa is an accomplished aerialist and an award-winning competitive pole dancer. He got into pole dancing on a dare, and now it has brought him to many places.

"On a dare, why don’t you just try it out? So I went into class and then the teacher saw that I was like bendy and strong so, he threw me on the pole and I thought it was a lot of fun," he added.

At the Broadway Barkada’s Annual "Lumipad" show, he debuted what would become his video entry for the 2016 US Aerial Championships in New York.

"I like that it’s getting recognized and seen in different light so when I tell people I’m a pole dancer they’re not like 'Oh', hopefully it will change the mindset," he set.

His dancing skills have also landed him a role in the 2015 revival of the King and I.

Now, he's living the dream.

"Follow your dreams. I came from the Philippines. I grew up there, went to college there. New York City, not even knowing anything and then I’m on Broadway and performing and it can happen so it’s really wonderful," he said.
