Pinoys in Canada create new tradition to cope with holiday blues

VANCOUVER – For locals, the annual Candytown Festival in Vancouver marks the official start of holiday events across the city.

But while many are excited, some Filipinos are reminded of Christmas in the Philippines.

"It's different. We have a long Christmas back home. But over here is very short. So enjoy whatever they can give you," said Ina Celeste.

Shirley and Francisco Reynon are spending their first Christmas in Canada to spend time with their youngest grandson. They admit that aside from the cold weather, it's been quite an adjustment.

"Talagang bored na bored kami kasi syempre naalala namin yung naiwanan namin," said Shirley.

Francisco added, "Malungkot po dahil walang family dito, hindi kasama ang pamilya."

Old timers say the trick is to make the season as close to celebrations back home as possible. It could also be the perfect time to create new traditions with the family.

"We are looking forward to a Christmas in the Philippines. House to house mayroon tayong pinaghahandaang pagkain," said Linda Dizon.
