Huawei Nova 5T hands-on: Android flagship for less (Yes, Android)
MANILA -- For roughly a third of the cost of the Huawei P30 Pro, the Nova 5T packs the same flagship processor and 4 rear cameras, again making the case for power-packed smartphones minus eye-watering price tags.
And yes, it runs Android and comes pre-installed with Google services such as Gmail, Maps, Photos and the Play Store, the gateway to millions of Android apps.
The Kirin 980 on the Nova 5T is the same chip that gives the P30 and Mate 20 series their artificial intelligence capabilities for better camera, battery and overall performance.
At least until the Mate 30 phones are unveiled in Germany on Sept. 19 with the Kirin 990, the 980 is the Shenzhen-based tech giant’s top silicon. The Nova 5T breezed through tasks in our initial hands-on as expected for a 980-powered phone.
Camera performance on the Nova 5T, considering its price, is a pleasant surprise, especially considering its P18,990 price tag. Colors are rich and vivid, contrast is sharp and night mode works comparable with the P30 though the images appear a tad too soft.
It has a 48 MP main shooter, a 16 MP wide camera, a 2 MP portrait lens and a 2 MP macro sensor. The selfie camera, contained in a circular cutout on the top left corner, can shoot in 32 MP.
Performance is snappy out of the box. The Nova 5T runs Android 9 with Huawei’s EMUI 9.1 on top. The 3,750 mAh battery should be enough for a full day of use but we need to run it through more tests.
The 6.26-inch Full HD screen 2,340 x 1,080 doesn’t get as bright at the highest setting but colors were pleasant with deep blacks for an LCD panel.
The Nova 5T’s purple color variant is unlike anything on the market, the iridescent effect revealing the series’ new logo depending on the lighting. It's not for everybody. It also comes in blue and black.
