Sony's PlayStation recognized as world's best-selling game console

TOKYO - Sony Corp.'s PlayStation has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's best-selling home video game console, having sold 450.19 million units over 25 years, its game business unit said Tuesday.

The first PlayStation device was launched in December 1994, when Nintendo Co.'s Super Nintendo console was dominant in the home video game market, and quickly gained popularity due to its 3-D graphics and lineup of software titles.

Its producer Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC introduced the PlayStation 2 in March 2000 and sold more than 150 million units of the second-generation console worldwide, followed by the PlayStation 3 released in November 2006 which adopted the Blu-ray disc format.

With the latest PlayStation 4 console, the Japanese entertainment conglomerate established a subscription business model for video games, providing online games at a fixed charge for 36.9 million registered users.

The company plans to introduce the next-generation PlayStation 5 console in the year-end shopping season of 2020.

Ben Stiller sets world record for longest selfie stick

Ben Stiller has broken the world record for the longest selfie stick at the premiere of his film, “Zoolander 2,” in London.

The actor was joined by his co-stars as he held the 8.5 meter monopod over his head with a mobile device attached to it.

A judge from the Guinness World Records was on hand to confirm the record-breaking effort.

Stiller portrays model Derek Zoolander in the comedy whose plot revolves around the assassination of the world's biggest stars.

The art of the selfie also takes center stage in the film as each dead celebrity took their final selfies while imitating Zoolander's signature pose.

Stiller admitted a sequel was not originally in the cards. The original film only had moderate box office success 15 years ago but later built a cult following.

World's oldest man dies at 112 in Japan

TOKYO, Japan - The world's oldest man, Yasutaro Koide, died on Tuesday at the age of 112 in central Japan, a local official said.

Koide, born just months before the Wright brothers made their first successful flight, died in hospital in the central Japanese city of Nagoya, where he had lived for many years, said the city official.

The super-centenarian, recognised as the world's oldest male at 112 last year, died of heart failure and pneumonia, the official added.

Koide, a former tailor who was born on March 13, 1903 in Fukui prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, received a certificate from Guinness World Records confirming the achievement after another Japanese man who was just a month older died in July.

Asked about the key to longevity, Koide had reportedly said: "The best thing to do is avoid overwork and live with joy."

Japan is known for the longevity of its people and around a quarter of its population of 127 million is aged 65 or older.

It was not immediately clear who would succeed Koide as the world's oldest male.

Currently, the world's oldest person is American Susannah Mushatt Jones who is 116 and was born on July 6, 1899, according to the Guinness World Records website.

Charice clinches Guinness World Record

MANILA -- After being dubbed "The Most Talented Girl in the World," singing sensation Charice Pempengco has earned yet another international distinction, this time for her stint as a judge on "The X Factor Philippines."

The 21-year-old singer on Friday thanked Guinness World Records on Twitter, as she posted a photo showing details of her record-setting achievement as the world's "youngest winning judge."

The blurb seen in the photo, reportedly of a page from the 2014 edition of the Guinness World Records book, cites Pempengco's age when she became the winning mentor on the local version of "The X Factor."



"Charice (Philippines, b. Charmaine Pempengco, 10 May 1992) was 20 years 150 days old when she mentored KZ Tandignan (b. Kristine Tandingan) to victory in the first season of 'The X Factor Philippines' on 7 October 2012," it says.

Pempengco appeared as mentor-judge on the ABS-CBN-aired reality talent search, alongside veterans Gary Valenciano, Martin Nievera and Pilita Corrales.

The young singer rose to international fame in 2007, when she made her debut on American television via "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

At the time she made her second guesting on another popular talk program, "The Oprah Winfrey Show," Pempengco was dubbed by the host as "The Most Talented Girl in the World."

Pempengco went on to guest-star in the hit American TV musical "Glee" and release an album produced by renowned music veteran David Foster.

The openly gay singer's new Guinness record is the Philippines' second record-setting feat to be recognized by the organization this year.

In May, the country broke the record for the most number of sky lanterns flown simultaneously. The event held at the University of the Philippines Visayas saw 15,185 sky lanterns released, beating Romania's record of 12,740.

The Philippines also clinched nine world records in 2012, including the world's biggest fashion show with 2,000 models on the catwalk; the largest collection of Superman memorabilia; and the largest collection of jigsaw puzzles.

Guinness honors Paeng for 3rd time

MANILA, Philippines - The Guinness World Records has updated Filipino sports legend Paeng Nepomuceno’s third record, boosting his career titles to 124 from the previously published 118.

Among the titles that were added to Nepomucenio’s achievements are the 2008 South Pacific Classic in Melbourne, the 2010 Bowling World Cup National Finals and the 2011 Philippine International Open.

Nepomuceno, who beat current world champion two-handed bowler Jason Belmonte in the South Pacific Classic finals, is the only foreign athlete to win the prestigious event twice.Paeng also holds a unique record of being the youngest Philippine International Masters champion at 17 in 1974 and at 54 in 2011. He has been consistently winning titles since 1972. Paeng’s three Guinness World Records are also all unbroken.

“It’s truly a big honor for me and the country to be listed for the third time in the Guinness World Records,” said Nepomuceno.

His other two World Guinness Records are for being the youngest world bowling champion at 19 when he won the Bowling World Cup in Teheran, Iran in 1976 and the second for bagging the world titles in three different decades.

Paeng won the BWC in 1976, 1980 (in Indonesia) and 1992 (Le Mans, France) and a fourth BWC crown in 1996 in Northern Ireland. Todate, he has six world titles.

Nepomuceno was also named Bowling Athlete of the Millennium by FIQ, the world governing body, in 1999. He is the first male bowling athlete to be enshrined in the World Bowling Hall of Fame, with his life-sized image displayed at the entrance of the Hall of Fame and Museum in Arlington, Texas.

When not competing, Nepomuceno travels around the world as an international bowling ambassador. He holds a coaching course certification for the United States Bowling Congress.
