Boxing: Fury batters Wilder in TKO triumph in title rematch

LAS VEGAS -- Tyson Fury reigns again as a heavyweight world champion after battering Deontay Wilder on the way to a stunning seventh-round stoppage in their World Boxing Council title rematch.

Fourteen months after their dramatic split-decision draw, Britain's Fury dominated the American champion -- who had blood streaming from his left ear and leaking from his mouth when referee Kenny Bayless called a halt at the behest of Wilder's corner.

"The king has returned to the top of the throne," said Fury, who had dropped Wilder in the third and fifth rounds as he remained unbeaten -- and handed Wilder the first defeat of his career.

The self-styled "Gypsy King" from northern England -- who was borne to the ring on a golden throne -- had put on a boxing masterclass in their first fight, but he was clearly ready to brawl from the opening bell on Saturday.

A massive right from Fury knocked down Wilder in the third and Wilder struggled to regain his legs -- although when he went down again moments later it was ruled a slip.

A left to the body had Wilder down again in the fifth, and Fury was raining blows on Wilder when Bayless called a halt at 1:39 of the seventh round after Wilder's corner threw in the towel.

Wilder, 34, suffered his first defeat in 44 fights, falling to 42-1 with 1 drawn and 41 knockouts.

The "Bronze Bomber" was unable to surpass Muhammad Ali's record of 10 successful heavyweight title defenses.

"I just want to say a big shout out Deontay Wilder," said Fury, who improved his own unbeaten record to 30-0 with one drawn and 21 knockouts. "He manned up. he really did show heart of a champion.

"I hit him with a clean right hand and dropped him, and he got back up and battled on into round seven.

"He is a warrior, he will be back, he will be champion again."

As a pro-Fury crowd at the MGM Grand cheered, Wilder briefly protested the stoppage.

- 'A warrior' -

"I just wish that my corner would have let me went out on my shield," he said. "I'm a warrior."

Wilder had knocked Fury down twice in their first fight in Los Angeles -- the Briton miraculously climbing off the canvas in the 12th round to hang on for a share of the spoils.

With new trainer Javan "Sugarhill" Steward in his corner, and with more than 16 additional pounds on his 273-pound frame, Fury was on the attack early, backing Wilder up with his jab and landing several hard shots in the opening round.

He didn't produce the second-round knockout he'd predicted, but he was clearly in control.

The fight, the biggest heavyweight collision since Lennox Lewis bludgeoned Mike Tyson into submission on the banks of the Mississippi River in 2002, drew a star-studded crowd.

Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Patrick Mahomes was ringside, so were Mark Davis, owner of the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders and Raiders coach John Gruden.

Retired NBA greats Magic Johnson and Jerry West were on hand, as was current Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green.

With the rematch in the books, fight fans will be hoping to see Fury take on compatriot Anthony Joshua -- holder of the IBF, WBA and WBO belts -- in a heavyweight unification bout.

Boxing: Alvarez KOs Kovalev in 11th to win WBO title

LAS VEGAS -- Canelo Alvarez knocked out Sergey Kovalev with a vicious right hand to win the WBO light heavyweight title on Saturday, moving up two weight classes to become a four division champion.

The 29-year-old Mexican superstar caught Russia's Kovalev with a left hook-right hand combination that sent the former champion almost crashing through the ropes near the end of the 11th round at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Boxing: Duno falls to Ryan Garcia in just one round

Filipino boxer Romero Duno suffered a brutal stoppage defeat to young prospect Ryan Garcia in the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez-Sergey Kovalev bout, Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (Sunday in Manila).

The 21-year-old Garcia landed a right hand that sent Duno to the canvas, just 98 seconds into the bout.

The referee stopped the bout despite Duno's attempts to recover. The Filipino dropped to 12-2 in his boxing career, losing for the first time since May 2016.

Garcia, meanwhile, rose to 19-0.

"All respect to Duno," Garcia said after the bout. "He came in shape. He caught me with that overhand right… I took it. From there, I knew I could just keep taking 'em and keep coming at him."

"When I took his best shot, I felt good," he added.

Garcia won the WBC silver lightweight title with his victory.

The right man won, but questions arise over Pacquiao-Thurman split decision

Manny Pacquiao was the rightful winner over Keith Thurman in their world welterweight title fight in Las Vegas on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time), but the nature of Pacquiao's victory stoked some controversy.

In a fight Pacquiao clearly dominated, judges called it a split decision, which rankled those who saw the Filipino champion impose his will on Thurman from start to finish.

Even those on the TV crew in the American broadcast for the fight voiced their astonishment over the decision.

Judges Dave Moretti and Tim Cheatham each scored the bout 115-112, while judge Glenn Feldman had it 114-113.

‘Pacquiao a legendary champ’: After taunts, Thurman shows classy side in loss

Thurman hopes for rematch

Keith Thurman accepted his split decision loss to Manny Pacquiao, citing that Manny Pacquiao was the better fighter in their WBA welterweight title fight in Las Vegas, on Saturday (Sunday Manila time).

"Pacquiao is a truly great, great legendary champion. He got the victory over me. I wish I had a little bit more output to go toe to toe. I felt that I was giving him a little bit time, but he did have experience in the ring," Thurman said after absorbing a decision loss from the Filipinoc champion.

Thurman had bragged in the leadup to the fight that he would do all sorts of things to Pacquiao inside the ring to force him to retire.

But it was clear from the onset that Pacquiao wasn't ready to hang it up yet, blitzing Thurman on a number of occasions and attacking him from all angles.

Pacquiao even floored Thurman in the first round, which made it clear to the American champion that he underestimated the Filipino boxing legend.

But unlike Adrien Broner who went on a bizarre rant following his unanimous decision loss to Pacquiao in January, Thurman was gracious in defeat.

"My conditioning, my output is just behind Manny Pacquiao. I would love a rematch. You gave blessing and lessons tonight, thank you Manny Pacquiao."

Pacquiao outpoints Thurman for world welterweight title

MANILA, Philippines –  A first round knockdown set the tone for Manny Pacquiao as he outpointed American boxer Keith Thurman in their highly anticipated WBA welterweight showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night (Sunday in Manila).

At 40 years old, the "Pacman" still displayed tremendous speed, punching power, and a tough chin en route to claiming a split decision over Thurman, a man 10 years younger.

One judge scored the bout 114-113 for Thurman, but the two other judges saw it in Pacquiao's favor, 115-112, giving the Filipino the victory – and the WBA welterweight championship in what was his 28th world title fight.

"He did his best, and I did my best, so the people are happy," said Pacquiao, who had his name chanted by the partisan MGM crowd all night long.

"Thurman . . . he did his best, he's not an easy opponent. He's a good boxer, he's strong, and I'm just blessed tonight," he added.

Pacquiao improved his record to 62 wins, with 7 losses and 2 draws. Thurman, meanwhile, lost for the first time in his professional career to drop to 29-1.

ANALYSIS: Thurman a threat, ‘not a sacrificial lamb’ for Pacquiao

MANILA—Keith Thurman could "still be a threat" in the ring, and that's something Manny Pacquao and his corner should be wary about, a fight expert said Saturday.

Ed Tolentino, in an interview with radio DZMM, said Thurman's punches are still potent even if his upcoming fight is only his second in 2 years.

Tolentino added that he sees "a good exchange of punches" in the Pacquiao-Thurman bout, which happens at MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Sunday (Manila time).

"Itong Thurman malakas ang kanan at malakas ang left hook. So this is why he is not just a sacrificial lamb," the analyst said.

According to Tolentino, Thurman's youth, size and power punches give the American champion a bit of an edge against Pacquiao, 40.

"He (Thurman) has power, hindi ito tulad ni Adrien Broner na napakadaling i-predict kasi ang alam natin tatakbo pa 'yang si Broner," Tolentino said.

Broner, Pacquiao's last opponent, lost via unanimous decision in January. Before that, Pacquiao won via technical knockout in his July 2018 bout against Argentinian Lucas Mathysse.

Thurman's last fight was against Josesito Lopez in 2019; his last ring date before that came in 2017, a nearly 2-year gap in between bouts.

MANILA—Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman made the weight early Saturday (Manila time) in Las Vegas, Nevada before they square off for the WBA welterweight showdown.

Both fighters stared intimidatingly at each other for half a minute after hitting the scales.

The 40-year-old Filipino ring icon, a multi-division world champion, came in at 146.5 pounds.

"It's gonna be a good fight cause I want to prove something. I'm so focus for this fight. I'm ready for tomorrow," Pacquiao said to the cheers of Filipino fans.

"I'm so prepared for this fight. This is I think one of my best training camp we had and best condition."

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old American fighter, who has tallied a 29-0 record, 22 via knockout, tipped the scales at 146.5 pounds.

"It is my time. This is one time and still champion 'bout tomorrow night. Manny Pacquiao ain't doing nothing to me baby," said Thurman who was booed loudly by the crowd.

Hall-of-fame referee of key Pacquiao fights picks ‘Pacman’ to KO Thurman

Hall-of-fame referee Joe Cortez is going all in with his forecast, favoring Manny Pacquiao to win by knockout when Pacquiao takes on Keith Thurman for the world welterweight championship in Las Vegas on Sunday morning (Manila time).

"Pacquiao is up in age, but he looked outstanding defeating Adrien Broner in January," Cortez said.

"If he fights the same way against Thurman, I have to go with Manny by a TKO win."

His comments were part of a panel of experts offering their fight prediction on ESPN.com's American website.

Cortez was the referee when Pacquiao bludgeoned South African world champion Lehlo Ledwaba to win the world super-bantamweight title in June 2001.

That was Pacquiao's first fight in the United States.

Cortez also officiated the first Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez clash, and the initial Pacquiao-Erik Morales tussle.

That Pacquiao-Marquez fight in 2004 ended in a split draw, while Morales beat Pacquiao the first time they fought in 2005.

Problem with his logic? Broner believes he, er, beat Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines—It's safe to say that Adrien Broner had a problem with the decision of the judges in his fight against Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.

The Filipino star won their welterweight bout handily, with judges scoring the fight 117-111, 116-112, 116-112 to hand Pacquiao a unanimous decision. The "Pacman" retained his WBA welterweight strap with the result.

Broner, who was booed by the crowd at the MGM Grand in the 11th round, was in disbelief at the scores.

"I beat him," he immediately declared to Showtime's Jim Gray during their post-fight interview.

"Everybody out there know I beat him. I controlled the fight. He was missing, I hit him clean more times. I beat him," Broner said emphatically.

When informed by Gray that he had landed an average of eight punches per round, Broner only grew more irate.

"It already sounds like you're against me," he accused Gray.

Broner leapt up the turnbuckle once the final bell rung, and celebrated only to be booed by the crowd. Afterward, he said he "did this for the hood."

"Y'all know I beat that boy," Broner said. "They're trying to get that money again, with Pacquiao and Floyd."

Broner was referring to a possible rematch between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., who watched closely at ringside as the fight unfolded.

Gray then asked what was next for Broner, who is now 3-3-1 in his last seven fights.

"I'm 3-3-1 in my last seven, but I'll be 7-0 against you," Broner told Gray.

"Well, that wouldn't mean much," Gray responded, before wrapping up the profanity-laced interview.

According to statistics compiled by ShoStats, Broner landed a total of 50 punches in the 12-round affair, after throwing just 295 shots.

40 is the new 20: Pacquiao outpoints Adrien Broner to remain world champ

Filipino ring legend Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao added another chapter to his legendary professional boxing career.

The fighting senator from the Philippines retained his World Boxing Association world welterweight belt by outpointing American challenger Adrien Broner in their showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

Judges scored the bout 117-111, 116-112, and 116-112, giving the 40-year-old Pacquiao the victory via unanimous decision.

Broner, nicknamed "The Problem," provided little trouble for Pacquiao as the Filipino champion landed a steady stream of left hands that repeatedly rocked the American and pushed him against the ropes. The challenger, in contrast, barely landed punches and was loudly booed by the Las Vegas crowd in the 11th round as he danced away from the "Pacman."

"I feel so happy, because I did my best in the fight and also in training," said Pacquiao after the bout. "We did a lot in training camp, so thank God for this victory."

After a slow first round, Pacquiao found his rhythm in the second round and kept the pressure on Broner all throughout. The Filipino star landed a huge left hand that stunned Broner in the seventh, forcing the American to the ropes where he could only cover up as Pacquiao teed off. Broner was forced to clinch several times in that round, even as Pacquiao landed a flurry of shots.

Both fighters were fairly inactive in the eighth round before Pacquiao again got Broner in trouble in the ninth, landing a massive left straight that had the challenger staggering backwards. Forced once again to the ropes, Broner absorbed punishment from Pacquiao before managing to circle out of trouble.

Pacquiao, displaying tremendous savvy, kept pressing the action in the final three rounds but Broner only repeatedly danced out of danger, much to the dismay of the sold-out crowd at MGM Grand.

"I wanted to push more," Pacquiao said when asked if he was trying for a knockout. "But my trainer Buboy (Fernandez) said that do not be careless, just take your time."

This was Pacquiao's first defense of the regular WBA title that he won last July 2018 after stopping Argentina's Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

With the triumph, the Filipino ring legend improved his professional boxing record to 61 wins, 7 losses, and 2 draws.

Broner, 11 years younger than Pacquiao, dropped to 33-4-1, 1 NC.

Pacquiao has now won back-to-back bouts since a controversial loss to Australia's Jeff Horn in July 2017, and the only 8-division world champion in boxing history maintained that his career was far from over.

"I really don't believe that my career is over. I proved it in my last fight, and now I proved it again at the age of 40. Manny Pacquiao's journey still continues," he said.

Whether that journey includes another big-money showdown with American superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. remains to be seen, however. Mayweather was among the 13,000-strong crowd at the venue on fight night, and Pacquiao expressed his gratitude to Mayweather Promotions for helping in organizing the Broner match.

When asked about a Mayweather rematch, Pacquiao just said: "Tell him to come back to the ring, and we will fight."

Mayweather has not fought a sanctioned match since stopping Conor McGregor in August 2017; his bout against Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa on New Year's Eve was billed as an exhibition.

Broner, meanwhile, was irate at the result and insisted he was the rightful winner.

"I beat him. Everybody out there knows I beat him. I controlled the fight. He was missing. I hit him clean more times. I beat him," he declared in a profanity-laced interview.

According to CompuBox, Broner landed less than ten punches in each of the first 11 rounds of the fight.

Pacquiao lighter for Las Vegas return

LAS VEGAS, United States - Filipino star Manny Pacquiao tipped the scales half a pound lighter here Friday for his WBA welterweight title bout against Adrien Broner.

A trim-looking Pacquiao, who faces Broner at Las Vegas's MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday, weighed in at exactly 146 pounds.

Broner, who is determined to wreck what will be Pacquiao's first fight on US soil since 2016, came in at 146.5 pounds.

Pacquiao smiled broadly as he faced off with Broner for the cameras following the weigh-in.

The eight-division world champion later said he wants to prove that he still has the ability to be a force in the welterweight division despite turning 40 last month.

"I'm happy to be back here and happy to fight tomorrow night," Pacquiao said.

"Forty is just a number, it doesn't matter that I'm 40 years old -- I feel young," he added. "Tomorrow I have something to prove: that at 40 I can still be at my best ... I want to prove that Manny Pacquiao is still there."

Pacquiao (60-4-2, 39 knockouts) last fought in July last year, when he scored his first knockout in six years with a seventh-round stoppage of Argentina's Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur.

Pacquiao, who holds the lesser version of the WBA's two welterweight belts, is widely believed to be angling for a rematch with retired welterweight king Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather won their money-spinning first bout in 2015 in a contest that failed to live up to its "Fight of the Century" hype.

Broner, 29, said Friday he is determined to seize his opportunity.

"I feel good. It's a helluva opportunity," he said. "After I win tomorrow night I'll be a legend overnight."

Pacquiao on Mayweather rematch: Let's talk about that after Broner fight

MANILA - For now, Manny Pacquiao would rather focus on the task at hand instead of thinking about his possible rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The 8-division champion is set to slug it out with American fighter Adrien Broner in a bout seen as a "prelude" to a second encounter with Mayweather.

In an interview on DZMM's "Tandem: Lima at Logan," Pacquiao admitted that he has been hounded by the press about the rematch.

"Maraming nagtanong sa akin niyan (Many [reporters] asked me that), 99 percent of the media asked me that question. But I told them let's keep the question hanging until after the fight," he said.

"My plan is one fight at a time, tapusin muna natin 'yung bukas saka na natin pag-usapan 'yung susunod na laban (Let's finish the fight tomorrow first, and then talk about the next fight). 'Yung rematch nandiyan lang 'yan, marami namang fighters diyan (The rematch is just there, there are many other fighters), so it's no problem."

The two first fought in 2015 with Pacquiao losing by decision.

It netted Mayweather a reported $240 million and Pacquiao upwards of $100 million.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao said he was happy he was already done with the hardest part of training.

He made the 147-pound weight limit for the bout, tipping the scales at 146 pounds at the weigh-in Friday night (Saturday morning in Manila).

"Happy ako natapos na ang preparation namin, 'yun yung the hardest part ng training namin 'yung preparation. The weigh-in day, nung nakuha namin, happy kami," he said.

(I am happy we are done with the preparations, that was the hardest part of our training. The weigh-in day, when we made weight, we're happy.)

The 40-year-old added that he remains youthful despite his age. Age is just a number, he said.

"I can still move fast, ginagawa ko ngayon 'yung ginagawa ko noong bata pa ako (I still can do now what I was doing when I was younger). Kumpiyansa tayo sa laban na ito na mananalo tayo (I am confident that we will win this fight), God is good. We did our best in training camp," said the fighting senator.

Tepora loses title after failing to make weight for Pacquiao-Broner undercard bout

Bad news struck Filipino fight fans Saturday when Jhack Tepora lost his world interim featherweight crown after failing to make weight.

Tepora came in 5.5 pounds over the 126-pound limit.

His bout against Mexico's Hugo Ruiz was supposed to be on the pay-per-view undercard on Saturday's WBA World Championship match between Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and American boxer Adrien Broner in Las Vegas, Nevada.

He was given 2 hours to shed off the excess weight but ultimately failed.

Thus, the WBA had to strip him of his interim featherweight crown and cancel his fight.

Alberto Guevarra will take Tepora's place to fight Ruiz. -- With a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News

Passionate Pacquiao says age won't be a factor in Broner fight

Manny Pacquiao vows to continue defying his age when he takes on a younger challenger in former 4-division champion Adrien Broner this Saturday in Las Vegas (Sunday, Manila time).

The world's only 8-division champion, who will be defending his WBA welterweight strap, said he feels youthful thanks to his love for the sport.

"I'm so thankful to God at the age of 40 I'm still here, I keep fighting. That's the evidence of being passionate in this sport," said the fighting senator from the Philippines.

The bout, which will take place at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, is supposed to be a prelude to a lucrative rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Pacquiao wanted to get back at Mayweather after succumbing to a unanimous decision loss to the American back in 2015.

But Broner, who is widely regarded as a Mayweather copycat, wants none of that.

"You all keep on saying he's going to fight Floyd again... but it's cool. I don't duck no fight," he said.

Nicknamed "The Problem," Broner promised to give Pacquiao problems in the ring.

"I just want you all to know that I play a lot. But when that bell rings, I ain't going there to lose, I ain't going to lay down. I'm coming in to get this victory," said Broner.

His coach, Kevin Cunningham, agreed.

"AB (Broner) will put on a spectacular performance on Saturday night. And I guarantee that he will send Manny back beltless," he said.

Like most pundits, boxing analyst-promoter Sampson Lewkowicz believes Pacquiao will come out victorious against Broner.

But he does not think that the Filipino will be able to duplicate his knockout win on Lucas Matthysse when he takes on the granite-chinned American.

"I have no doubt that Manny flew all the way through and he'll win the fight by decision," he said. "I don't believe he will [win by knockout]. He will have a great warrior [in front of him] that will not give up and will go all the way."
