Amazon says cloud outage triggered by capacity upgrade

WASHINGTON - A giant outage of Amazon's cloud-computing network in the US, which impacted large users such as media companies, was triggered by an effort to upgrade capacity, the company said Saturday.

The e-commerce giant's Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a major glitch on Wednesday that even hit the publishing system of the Washington Post, which is owned by Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos.

"The trigger, though not root cause, for the event was a relatively small addition of capacity," Amazon said in the statement.

The outage impacted many companies, which use AWS services to store data without having to manage their own servers.

According to US media, the New York subway was among those affected, as well as Roku, a streaming television service.

The Wall Street Journal said it was hit too.

AWS, created in 2006, leads the market for remote computing services. Research firms say it has a 30-50 percent market share.

Trump wants Congress to fix 'lax' immigration after NY attack

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump said Monday that a bomb attack by a 27-year-old from Bangladesh on New York's subway system underscored the "urgent need" for Congress to enact immigration reform.

Three people were slightly injured after the attacker's pipe bomb exploded only partially, while the suspect was sent to a hospital with apparently severe burns and wounds on his torso and hands.

"First and foremost, as I have been saying since I first announced my candidacy for president, America must fix its lax immigration system, which allows far too many dangerous, inadequately vetted people to access our country," Trump said in a statement.

He added that the suspect, identified as Akayed Ullah, had entered the country through "extended-family chain migration," a system the president is seeking to end that allows families to sponsor relatives to come to the United States.

He also cited his controversial travel ban on the entry of nationals from eight countries -- 6 of which have Muslim majorities -- as "one step forward in securing our immigration system."

Other measures Trump said he hoped Congress would pass included "increasing the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, enhancing the arrest and detention authorities for immigration officers, and ending fraud and abuse in our immigration system."

Trump also reiterated his call for terror convicts to receive "the strongest penalty allowed by law, including the death penalty."

He had previously called for the death penalty for Sayfullo Saipov, an immigrant from Uzbekistan who killed 8 people and injured 12 in an October 31 truck attack in New York.

Pinoys strip down for 'No Pants Subway Ride'

NEW YORK – While most New Yorkers are all bundled up on a frigid afternoon these train riders are dropping their pants on the subway all in the name of comedy.

“It’s so weird but it’s very exciting because you have no pants inside the subway and people are looking at you but you have to pretend that you totally forgot to put on your pants that day,” said Golda De La Merced of New York.

Organized by comedy group Improv Everywhere, founder Charlie Todd says, the very first "No Pants Subway Ride" prank started in New York in 2002 with only seven pant-less riders.

Today, this subway strip-down happens in 60 cities in over 25 countries.

In New York alone, there are over 4,000 riders.

This Filipino-American came all the way from Philadelphia to show off his super-hero undies.

“If you ride the subway on a regular day you will see grim faces and the whole concept of the No Pants Subway Ride is to bring a little joy, bring a little humor and hilarity to the daily lives of people who ride the subway,” said Kevin Mitra.

But not everyone is amused.

"For kids like me, it’s like a euphemism,” said Tiffany of Jersey City, New Jersey. “It’s unethical. It’s not respectful but this is New York, America.”

Cos-player Glen Robert Corral dressed up as a pant-less Captain Jack Sparrow.

“I think it’s their way of showing their freedom, liberty, their freedom of speech and expression,” said Corral.

“With all the stuff that’s happening in the world and in the news lately, this is what it should be like, everybody having fun, and hanging out and laughing,” said Conan Jorge, an Ozone Park resident.

Riders converged at the Union Square Park to show off their skills, this time in dancing.

For 14 years, the New York subway strip-down has become a yearly tradition without fail, and there are no signs that we are going to see the end of it any time soon.
