MANILA—Thailand gave the Philippines' DoTA 2 team a scare, but the home side represented by Sibol pulled through with a 3-2 thriller to win the Southeast Asian Games gold medal on Monday.
Mc Nicholson ”Mc” Villanueva, John Anthony ”Natsumi” Vargas, Jun ”Bok” Kanehara, Marvin Salvador ”Boomy” Rushton, Bryle Jacob ”CML” Alvizo, Van Jerico ”Van” Manalaysay and James Erice ”Erice” Guerra teamed up to give the hosts the victory.
The Filipinos asserted their dominance in the first game, firing on all cylinders to quickly claim the first match at 1-0.
Thailand, however, countered with a dominant game of its own to level at 1-1, before the Philippines bounced back in Game 3.
The visitors leveled to force a decider but the Philippines showed tenacity with a resounding Game 5 win.
After falling behind big in terms of kills, a gritty Filipino squad caught fire midway in the deciding game on its way to giving the Philippines its second esports gold medal in these Games after winning Mobile Legends.

MANILA, Philippines —Filipino Olympian Carlos Edriel “Caloy" Yulo once again put on a show in the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Tuesday.
This time, it was in the individual apparatus, where Yulo won gold in the floor exercise at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The dynamo was untouchable in his pet event, tallying a score of 14.700.
The silver medalist from Thailand, Tikumporn Surintornta, had a score of 13.833. Malaysia’s Mat Asri Zul Bahrin took the bronze with a score of 13.767.
A gold medal sweep was not in the cards for the 19-year-old Yulo, however.
He settled for a silver medal in pommel horse, garnering a score of 13.233. Eclipsing Yulo was Malaysia’s Tan Fu Jie, who performed a more difficult routine and got a score of 13.967.
Vietnam’s Dinh Phuong Thanh got the bronze with a score of 12.867.
Another Filipino, Jan Timbang, only mustered a score of 10.700.
Yulo finished the day by winning a silver in the still rings. He scored 13.733 in the event, a mark that was later tied by Indonesia’s Arifin Dwi.
They were both eclipsed by Vietnam’s Dang Nam, however. The defending champion in the apparatus scored a 13.867 to retain his gold medal.

ANGELES CITY—The Philippines struck its first gold medal in Southeast Asian Games arnis on Sunday, thanks to Dexter Bolambao who defeated his Burmese opponent in the men’s full contact (live stick) under 55 kilogram division.
Bolambao swished his way against Paing Soc to win via unanimous decision at Angeles University Foundation.
“Sobrang saya ko at natupad ko ang pangarap ko,” said a beaming Bolambao, who screamed with glee after hearing the judges’ verdict.
He is one of the 4 male Filipino arnisadors who made it to the gold medal round on Sunday.
Also vying for gold on Sunday are Nino Talledo (men’s 55-60 kg), Villardo Cunamay (men’s above 60 kg) and Mike Banares (men’s above 65-kg.)
This was the first time in 14 years that the indigenous sport of arnis has been hosted in SEA Games.
The last time was in 2005 when the Philippines previously hosted the biennial games.
