'Ugly Betty' creator dies aged 45

LOS ANGELES -- "Ugly Betty" creator Silvio Horta has been found dead in Miami, the show's actresses said Tuesday.

Horta's agent said a statement from the family was expected shortly. Although no cause of death was given, a report in Variety said Horta, 45, had died by suicide.

Horta developed the hit ABC show "Ugly Betty" based on a Colombian telenovela.

The series charted the progress of a geeky secretary attempting to forge a career at a New York fashion magazine.

Both the show -- executive produced by Salma Hayek -- and its breakout star America Ferrera won Golden Globes.

"I'm stunned and heartbroken to hear the devastating news of 'Ugly Betty' creator, Silvio Horta's death," Ferrera wrote on Instagram Tuesday.

"His talent and creativity brought me and so many others such joy & light."

"Ugly Betty" co-star Vanessa Williams added: "Still in shock after hearing the tragic news... His creativity and passion will be missed by so many of us that worked with him. May he Rest In Peace."

The show ran for four seasons from 2006, with Horta serving as showrunner and head writer.

Cuban-American Horta moved to Los Angeles in 1996, and sold his screenplay for slasher movie "Urban Legend" which became a hit film starring Jared Leto two years later.

Horta struggled to build on the success of "Ugly Betty," with no major projects aired since his breakout hit ended in 2010.

Norwegian author and former spouse of princess dead at 47

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Norwegian author Ari Behn, who was previously married to the country's Princess Maertha Louise, died on Wednesday aged 47, his manager told AFP, saying he had committed suicide.

"It is with great sadness in our hearts that I on behalf of the very closest relatives of Ari Behn must announce that he took his own life today," Behn's manager Geir Hakonsund said in an email to AFP.

Behn published his first book in 1999, a collection of short stories whose English translation is "Sad as hell".

He rose to public prominence in 2002 after marrying the Norwegian royal Maertha Louise, and they wrote a book about their wedding with the title "From heart to heart".

The couple had three daughters together before announcing their divorce in August 2016.

Friends and public figures expressed their condolences on Wednesday, including Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg and the royal family.

"Ari was an important part of our family for many years, and we carry warm and good memories of him with us," the Royal House of Norway said in a statement.

Behn also wrote several novels and plays, and in 2018 published his last book, "Inferno," in which he detailed his struggle with mental health issues.

Mom kills 2 kids before self in California

SAN JOSE, California - An Asian woman and her 2 young sons were found dead inside their apartment in San Jose, California Wednesday in what police are calling a double murder-suicide.

Multiple reports say the father, also of Asian descent, discovered the incident and called for help from their neighbors. Authorities were called to the scene.

The family was initially reported to be from the Philippines, but the San Jose Police confirmed to ABS-CBN News a day after that they were Vietnamese.

The causes of death have yet to be released, but authorities say the boys, aged 4 and 7, had no signs of trauma. It is believed the mother poisoned her children before hanging herself.

Neighbors described the mother as happy and sweet, but they believed she may have suffered from depression after losing her job last year and being the only provider for her family.

SHINee star's suicide highlights dark side of the K-pop dream

SEOUL -- Known for its ultra-competitive, pressure-cooker society, South Korea has one of the world's highest suicide rates. And this week the even higher stresses in the country's lucrative showbiz industry took their toll on a K-pop superstar.

Kim Jong-Hyun, a 27-year-old lead singer of the hugely popular boy band SHINee, took his own life in a Seoul hotel room on Monday, with his death sending shockwaves through fans around the world.

Five-member SHINee were at the forefront of the "Korean Wave" that has seen South Korean pop culture sweep Asia by storm in the past decade and lap at shores even further afield.

The band has found fame and fortune with multiple chart-topping albums and sold-out concerts at home and abroad since their debut in 2008.

But a grittier reality lies beneath the glitz and glamour of the K-pop scene -- cutthroat competition, a lack of privacy, online bullying and relentless public pressure to maintain a wholesome image at all times and at any cost.

Many stars like Kim are picked up by agencies at a young age, usually in their early or mid teens, their lives then taken over by gruelling singing and dancing training, with the ever-present risk of falling foul of a cut-throat screening process.

Holidays are rare and privacy an unaffordable luxury as many live with other band mates in dorm-like apartments provided by their agents, who dictate everything from music styles and diet regimen to mobile phone use -- and normally impose dating bans.

Many struggle with a constant lack of sleep and privacy.

Kim Se-Jeong, a popular K-pop singer, confessed of once sleeping a total of one hour for four days. "I had to perform on stage, appear in TV shows and shoot ad commercials all at the same time," she told a television interviewer earlier this year.

Kang Daniel, of the popular boy band Wanna One, admitted that his biggest wish was "having just one day of rest."

"For months ahead of my debut, I usually woke up four or five in the morning... practised until two or three in the morning the following day," Kang said in a television interview aired in August.

He was "grateful" to get a chance at fame, he added, but the gruelling schedule eventually affected his health and the 21-year-old cancelled all public appearances earlier this month.

Smiley happy face
Many K-pop stars face tremendous pressure to look and behave perfectly in an industry powered by so-called "fandoms" -- groups of well-organized admirers who spend enormous amounts of time and money to help their favored stars climb up the charts and attack their perceived rivals.

In return, the stars are expected to tread carefully in an industry where today's most-fervent fans can be tomorrow's most vicious critics if their idols fail to meet their expectations -- or "betray" them.

Drug use or drunken driving are seen as career-breakers, while behavior that causes a "stir" -- anything from a social media gaffe to a failure to smile ceaselessly at public appearances -- could be criticized for years.

Many are constantly chased by paparazzi and camera-touting fans who share or sell every single detail and images of the stars' daily lives online for public scrutiny.

"These 'idols' virtually live in a fishbowl and are pressed to put on a smiley, happy face while behaving nicely 24/7," said cultural commentator Kim Seong-Soo, adding the strain could "cripple them emotionally."

Such challenges are common among celebrities around the world, he told AFP, but are amplified in the hyper-wired South Korea, which has some of the world's fastest internet speeds and highest smartphone usage, and a society where pressure to conform is high.

Taboos about mental illness dissuade many from seeking medical help, including public figures, he added.

Winner takes all

Kim's death is unusual for a K-pop musician at the height of his popularity, but is the latest in a long list of showbiz suicides.

In 2010, Park Yong-Ha, a top actor who had huge followings at home and in Japan and China, hanged himself, and former actor Kim Sung-Min, whose career was ruined by a jail term for drug abuse, did the same last year.

In the most shocking series of suicides, actress Choi Jin-Sil - a household name - hanged herself in 2008, her actions blamed on online bullying.

Her brother, also an actor, killed himself two years later, and her ex-husband, former baseball star Cho Sung-Min, followed suit in 2013.

Actress Park Jin-Hee interviewed hundreds of actors and actresses for her master's thesis in 2009 and said that 40 percent had considered suicide at least once due to a lack of privacy, online bullying or unstable incomes.

But celebrity suicides are only a microcosm of South Korea's wider social problems, including cutthroat competition in areas from education to workplaces and a lack of safety nets, said commentator Kim, calling depression an "inevitable outcome" of living under such strain.

"Our country has an extreme form of winner-take-all system where those who fail can hardly make a comeback, or even survive."

Suicide suspected in death of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has died unexpectedly at 52, his publicist said on Thursday, and police in Detroit said they are treating the death as a possible suicide.

Seattle-born Cornell was found dead in the bathroom of his hotel in Detroit on Wednesday night, hours after the grunge band played a concert in the city.

"His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing," Cornell's publicist Brian Bumbery said in a statement. He said the family would work closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause.

A Detroit police spokesman said officers were called to Cornell's hotel around midnight by a friend of the musician.

"When officers went to the room they found Chris Cornell laying in his bathroom, unresponsive and he had passed away. We are investigating it as a possible suicide but we are waiting on the medical examiner to determine the cause and manner of death," said Detroit Police Department spokesman Dan Donakowski.

He declined to give further details.

Cornell, the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, had tweeted earlier on Wednesday: "#Detroit finally back to Rock City !!!! @soundgarden."

“What I look forward to the most -- because I tour so much, especially the last couple of years, by myself -- is the camaraderie. It’s what we missed when we weren’t a band,” Cornell had posted on Facebook on Tuesday. The band had been in the middle of a U.S. tour.

Soundgarden was one of the leading bands in the grunge music movement in the 1980s and '90s, releasing albums such as "Badmotorfinger" and the Grammy-winning "Superunknown," which brought the band mainstream music scene success.

Cornell had spoken openly in interviews of his struggles with drugs as a teenager, and later with alcohol. But he said in 2007 that he had been sober since checking himself into rehab in 2002. He also spoke of periods of depression and agoraphobia.

Led Zeppelin singer Jimmy Page led tributes on Thursday to Cornell, calling him on Twitter "Incredibly Talented, Incredibly Young, Incredibly Missed."

Kiss singer Paul Stanley tweeted he was "Stunned to hear the death of Chris Cornell," while Aerosmith's Joe Perry called his passing "a sad loss of a great talent to the world."

Soundgarden broke up in 1997 and Cornell in 2001 joined members of Rage Against The Machine to form Audioslave, which earned acclaim with its self-titled album.

Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and embarked on the current U.S. tour in April.

Cornell also had an extensive solo career as a singer, guitarist, composer and lyricist and worked with various other musicians over three decades in the music business.

Vice chair of S. Korea's Lotte Group found dead in apparent suicide

The vice chairman of South Korea's troubled Lotte Group was found dead Friday, police said, in an apparent suicide amid a widening corruption probe into the country's fifth largest business conglomerate.

The body of Lee In-Won was found hanging from a tree near a hiking trail in the eastern town of Yangpyeong.

A four-page letter -- apparently a suicide note -- was found in his car, expressing loyalty to the group's chairman Shin Dong-Bin and denying allegations that the firm had avoided huge sums of tax and created slush funds.

Lee was a key suspect in an alleged tax evasion scam worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

An official probe into the retail and hotel giant widened in June when prosecutors raided the offices of 15 subsidiaries, before issuing summons to a number of executives.

In South Korea, it is not unusual for a high-profile suspect to commit suicide when he is the subject of an investigation.

In 2003, Chung Mong-Hun, then chairman of the country's No. 2 conglomerate Hyundai Group, jumped to his death from his office building after being interrogated over the group's secret transfer of $500 million to North Korea to secure business deals.

A year later, an executive of Daewoo business group Nam Sang-Guk jumped off a bridge into the Han River in Seoul after being questioned over corruption allegations.

Last year, businessman Sung Wan-Jong hanged himself, leaving a note suggesting he had offered bribes to powerful elite players including former Prime Minister Lee Wan-Woo.

Coffee-drinkers less likely to die from certain diseases

People who report drinking three to five cups of coffee per day are less likely to die prematurely from heart disease, suicide, diabetes or Parkinson's disease, US researchers said.

Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee were shown to have benefits, said the study by researchers at the Harvard University Chan School of Public Health published in the November 16 edition of the journal Circulation.

The study compared people who don't drink coffee, or drank less than two cups daily, to those who reported drinking "moderate" amounts of coffee, or up to five cups daily.

The study did not prove a cause-and-effect for coffee and the reduced likelihood of certain diseases, but uncovered an apparent link that aligns with previous research, and that scientists would like to probe further.

"Bioactive compounds in coffee reduce insulin resistance and systematic inflammation," said first author Ming Ding, a doctoral student in the Department of Nutrition.

"That could explain some of our findings. However, more studies are needed to investigate the biological mechanisms producing these effects."

No protective effect was found against cancer in this study. Some previous research has pointed to a link between coffee consumption and a lower risk of certain cancers.

The study was based on data gathered from three large, ongoing surveys including some 300,000 nurses and other health professionals who agree to answer questionnaires about their own medical conditions and habits at regular intervals over the course of 30 years.

"In the whole study population, moderate coffee consumption was associated with reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease, and suicide," said the findings.

Researchers also accounted for potential confounding factors such as smoking, body mass index, exercise, alcohol consumption, and diet. But the fact that the research relied on surveys, which use self-reported behavior, could raise questions about its reliability.

And experts warned that coffee -- a substance adored by many devotees -- may not be right for everyone.

"Regular consumption of coffee can be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet," said senior author Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard.

"However, certain populations such as pregnant women and children should be cautious about high caffeine intake from coffee or other beverages."

Jim Carrey's girlfriend found dead

The on-again, off-again girlfriend of US actor Jim Carrey has died at her California home of an apparent suicide, police said Tuesday.

"Cathriona White, 30, was pronounced dead by paramedics Monday evening," Fred Corral, a spokesman at the Los Angeles County coroner's office, told AFP.

He said White's death was being treated as a suicide.

Local news reports said the couple, who have been dating on and off since 2012, broke up last Thursday.

White sent a cryptic message on her Twitter account that day that read: "Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest."

Carrey said in a statement that he was "deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona."

"She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled," the 53-year-old actor added.

"My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt."

White was found at her home Monday evening by a friend who called emergency services. She had reportedly left behind a note.

Researchers measure average penis size

PARIS -- What is an "average" size for a penis?

The enduring question now has a scientific answer: 13.12 centimeters (5.16 inches) in length when erect, and 11.66 cm around, according to an analysis of more than 15,000 appendages around the world.

In a flaccid state, it found, the penis of the average Joe is all of 9.16 cm in length and has a girth of 9.31 cm.

The numbers should help "reassure the large majority of men that the size of their penis is in the normal range," said British researchers who had assembled data from studies where participants had their member measured by a professional.

The team then used the collated numbers to devise a graph that doctors can use in counselling men with "small penis anxiety."

In the worst cases, men may be diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder -- a debilitating psychological condition that can lead to obsessive and anti-social behavior, depression and even suicide.

In reality, only 2.28 percent of the male population have an abnormally small penis, said the study -- and the same percentage an unusually large one.

The study participants were men aged 17-91 who had their penises measured in 20 previously published studies conducted in Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States.

The team found no evidence for penis size differences linked to race, though most of the study participants were of European and Middle Eastern descent and a full comparison could thus not be made.

Nor did the researchers find any convincing correlation between a man's foot size and the length of his manhood.

They acknowledged their results may have been somewhat skewed by the possibility that men who volunteer to be examined may be more confident in their penis size than the general population.

The team said their work, published in the BJU International journal of urology, was the first to combine all existing data on penis length and girth into a definitive graph.

The information may be useful for reassuring men worried about their size. But it may also have the unintended effect of shriveling the egos of those who thought they were abnormally well-endowed.

Doctors may also use the graph to help men find well-fitting condoms, said the team.

Robin Williams widow, children tussle over actor's estate

The widow of comic legend Robin Williams and his three adult children are locked in a pitched battle over his estate months after his death, court records show.

The conflict centers on items the groundbreaking comedian left behind after committing suicide in August, from clothing and watches to collectibles such as bicycles and figurines, as well as some of his fortune.

His widow, Susan Schneider Williams, said in a petition filed in Superior Court in San Francisco on Dec. 19 that a trust Williams set up for her entitled her to their home in Tiburon, California, and most of its contents.

The petition said some property was removed from the house without her permission and that "Mrs. Williams became frightened of the co-trustees invading her home," prompting her to hire legal counsel.

"Susan Schneider Williams lost her husband through a shocking and emotionally charged event," the document said. "Since the incident, she was not given time to grieve her loss free from the frenetic efforts to interfere with her domestic tranquility."

The filing said that while another home Williams owned in Napa, California, and most of the items inside belonged to his children - Zachary, Zelda, and Cody - based on a separate trust, certain personal items did not.

Robin Williams' children responded in a filing on Jan. 21, alleging that Susan Schneider Williams was deliberately attempting to obscure the language of the documents to secure more of the estate for herself.

The children's filing said they were "heartbroken" and that Susan Schneider Williams, who became the actor's third wife in 2011, was acting against his wishes by challenging his plans for his estate.

"Robin's children want nothing more than to be left alone to grieve," their spokesman Allan Mayer said in a statement. "The fact that they are being forced into these legal proceedings adds insult to a terrible injury."

Mayer denied that the children may have taken anything from Susan Williams' home.

Susan Williams' attorney, James Wagstaffe, did not respond to a request for comment.

Oscar winner Williams, 63, hanged himself with a belt in his Tiburon home on Aug. 11, after seeking treatment for depression. He was last seen alive by his widow.

His death sent shockwaves across the country and stood in stark contrast to the characters he portrayed in films such as "Good Morning, Vietnam" and "Dead Poets Society" who encouraged people to tap into their own inner vitality.

Virginia Senator Creigh Deeds stabbed multiple times; son died from gunshot

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.—Police say early indications are that the son of a state senator in Virginia stabbed his father before shooting himself to death.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller said Tuesday afternoon at a news conference that authorities are still investigating the stabbing of Sen. Creigh Deeds, but it appears it was an attempted murder and suicide.

“Based on the evidence we have right now we are looking into this as an attempted murder and suicide,” Geller told a news conference. “That is not an absolute determination.”

The senator’s 24-year-old son, Gus, died at the home of a gunshot wound. Geller says Deeds and his son were the only people at the home Tuesday morning.

The Democratic senator, who ran unsuccessfully for governor four years ago, was at first listed in critical condition. A hospital spokeswoman said his condition has improved to fair.

Authorities received an emergency call Tuesday morning and responded to the senator’s home in rural Bath County in western Virginia, police said. They found the 55-year-old senator with multiple stab wounds. His son was also found at the home, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Geller said police had talked with the senator, but she wouldn’t reveal what he said. She also did not say who made the emergency call.

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell said in a statement the news was “utterly heartbreaking.”

“Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service,” McDonnell said in the statement.

Gus Deeds is one of the senator’s four adult children. He had been enrolled at the College of William and Mary off and on since 2007, and withdrew last month, school spokesman Brian Whitson said. The college did not say why he left.

During Deeds’ bid for governor, his son took off a semester to join his dad on the campaign trail.

“He needs me and I need him,” Deeds told a reporter in the fall of 2009, about campaigning with Gus.

“I’ve got to go through this campaign process, but that doesn’t mean I’ve got to be completely separated from my family the whole time,” he said.

Candle-lit vigil for gay rights after Italy youth suicide

ROME - Hundreds of gay rights activists held a candle-lit vigil at Rome's Colosseum Wednesday to call for a law against homophobia after a youth threw himself off the 11th story of a building in the Italian capital.

Some 500 activists and protesters holding candles, flowers and placards reading "I am gay" and "No Homophobia" demanded action after the latest in a series of suicide acts by gay students which have shocked the nation.

"This is a moment of pain for the homosexual community. These suicides are too much, they reveal a world of solitude and gay suffering," said LGBT activist Vanni Piccolo.

"We are calling for a real commitment from the institutions and not just words," he said.

The death this week of the 21-year-old known publicly as Simone D. followed two other youth gay suicides this year in Rome.

"We are here to launch a message against loneliness, we have to look after our young, gay or otherwise in this city and country," said Aurelio Mancuso, head of the Equality Italy association.

"We need a national plan to combat youth marginalisation," he said.

In his suicide note, Simone reportedly wrote that "Italy is a free country, but there are homophobes and those like that must search their consciences."

"Simone's tragic gesture, and leaving a note which was also a condemnation, reminds us of the country's inability to give people of diverse sexual orientations equal dignity," said Senate vice-president Valeria Fedeli, who attended the vigil.

Parliament must "approve a law against homophobia ... as quickly as possible, to restore equality, freedom and respect to Italy," she said.

In September, Amnesty International slammed Italy's lack of legislation against crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity as "unacceptable", saying it fell foul of international human rights laws.

Italy's lower house began in July to debate a bill which would outlaw homophobic hate crimes but it met opposition from Catholic figures within the centre-right who complained such a law risked curtailing freedom of speech.

Teen who posted video about cyberbullying commits suicide

A bullied teen girl told her story with flashcards in a YouTube video.

She couldn’t take it anymore.

A Canadian teenager  who was bullied and tormented online by classmates --- and who described her ordeal in a heartbreaking YouTube video --- killed herself a month after she posted it on the web.

Amanda Todd died Wednesday. She was just 15.

But Amanda's mom doesn’t want the video — which explains how a photo of her topless daughter sparked the cyberbullying — to go away.

“I think the video should be shared and used as anti-bullying tool,” Carol Todd told The Vancouver Sun.

“That is what my daughter would have wanted.”

She posted the video online Sept. 7.  It's not known how she killed herself on Wednesday.

The Vancouver-area teen tells her sad story in a slide show of short phrases printed on flashcards. It began when she was chatting online with someone who urged her to take her top off and expose her breasts. Amanda eventually gave into the stranger’s request.

A year later, the photo came back to haunt her, when it surfaced at school.

“Then nobody liked me,” one of the cards read. “I can never get that photo back.”

Amanda says she was mercilessly bullied, forced to change schools and eventually got into drugs and alcohol and began to cut herself. A peer made the photo of her breasts his Facebook profile photo. Another student punched her. Amanda tried to kill herself by drinking bleach, but was rushed to the hospital and survived.

Peers learned about that, too — and mocked the botched suicide attempt by posting pictures of bleach containers online, and tagging Amanda in the photos.

“She should try a different bleach,” one student wrote on Facebook, according to Amanda’s story. “I hope she dies this time and isn’t so stupid.”

Amanda was in the 10th grade at Coquitlam Alternate Basic Education in Coquitlam, near Vancouver.

The school was aware of the YouTube video before Amanda’s suicide and had “support in place,” according to Cheryl Quinton, a spokeswoman for the district.

Quinton described the alternative school as a “close-knit community” with only 200 students. Grief counseling is being provided.

“Bullying is a concern in every district,” Quinton said. “The element of social media, it adds a different element of danger. We’re [working to] continue the dialogue to heighten awareness of cyberbullying.”

Seau's death shocks, saddens hometown and NFL

Sadness socked San Diego on Wednesday as news spread of the county’s greatest sports icon having died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Junior Seau shot himself in the chest at his beachside home. He was 43 years old and not quite three years past playing in the last of his 20 NFL seasons.

Luisa Seau sobbed in front of reporters outside her son’s home and cried loudly, “Junior! Why didn’t you tell me you were going?”

A high-profile NFL free agent who is in San Diego covertly training to make a run at playing in 2012 was told the news during a workout.

“Noooo,” the man screamed.

That is how an entire region and many in the NFL felt.

San Diego prides itself on being a big small town. It is not New York, where icons grow on skyscrapers.

Seau, who played 13 seasons for the Chargers, was arguably the biggest star to ever play here. Only Tony Gwynn, who played 19 seasons for the Padres, and former Chargers quarterback Dan Fouts could even compare.
