Corona lawyers won't seek inhibition of senators

MANILA, Philippines -- Lawyers of Chief Justice Renato Corona will not seek the inhibition of four senator-judges the impeached magistrate alleged in a supplemental petition submitted to the Supreme Court were acting like prosecutors.

Defense spokesperson Tranquil Salvador III said they only wanted to point out instances that these senator-judges were not being fair.

In his supplemental position, Corona named Senators Franklin Drilon, Alan Peter Cayetano, Francis Pangilinan, Teofisto Guingona III and Sergio Osmena III.

The defense team had earlier filed for a motion to inhibit against Drilon but this was not acted on by the impeachment court.

Describing the Senate’s reaction to this motion, Salvador said:"Para kang nagtext ng pagkahaba-haba tapos ang sagot sayo ay (It’s like you texted a very long message and the answer you get is) 'ok'."

Another defense spokesperson, Rene Quicho, said senator-judges should only ask clarificatory questions or questions regarding points of law.
