Defense waives direct exam at Corona trial, prosecution scuttles cross

The defense dispensed with the direct examination of Chief Justice Renato Corona on the 42nd day of his impeachment trial, and the prosecution served notice it would not cross examine him.

This leaves only the senator-judges to throw clarificatory questions at him.

Earlier, defense lawyers of the Chief Justice said they might waive the direct examination of the magistrate given his physical condition.

Lawyer Ramon Esguerra said they want to spare Corona a "stressful situation."

"I don’t think so. I don’t want him to go through another stressful situation so we try to avoid as much as possible situation like that," Esguerra told reporters.
