Maybe life does begin at 40 after all. For Amy Perez, it is certainly the time of her life when blessings come in abundance.
Career-wise, things have never been better. While Amy is already a household name thanks to her memorable stints in such TV shows as “Palibhasa Lalake,” “Sang Linggo nAPO Sila” and “Magandang Tanghali Bayan,” it wasn’t until she landed the hosting gig for TV5’s “Face To Face” that she truly endeared herself to the masses who now refer to her as simply T’yang Amy.
It also did not hurt that she landed the well-loved character role of Ina Magenta on the huge “Enteng Kabisote” MMFF franchise of Vic Sotto and will be playing the role once again for the third time in a row.
On the personal front, her relationship with radio host Carlo Castillo continues to blossom even as she had to endure a temporary setback when the Supreme Court denied her petition for the annulment of her marriage with estranged husband Brix Ferraris.
Be that as it may, Amy and Carlo have already been blessed with a three-year old son and will soon be joined by another new member of their growing family. She is three months pregnant, she announced in a media conference on Thursday.
“I’ve come to a point that I feel so blessed because God has given me a great family and career. I just can’t thank Him more for another blessing. I pray that it’s a girl para hindi na ko outnumbered ng boys sa family,” Amy said in reference to Carlo, their son, Sean Kyle and Adi, her 15-year old son from her union with Brix.
Amy’s date with the stork, however, is not without its trade-offs and per advice of her doctors, she has to temporarily bid adieu to “Face To Face”, the top-rated morning reality show dubbed “Barangay Hall on Air”.
She will soon hand over her Barangay Kapitana duties to Gelli De Belen, at least for one year.
“I have to heed the advice of my doctor who said that at my age, delikado na ang magbuntis so kailangang magbawas ng konting trabaho. Kahit sa bahay nga, I cannot carry my three year old so hindi rin ako pwedeng mag-ganun,” she revealed.
Amy is quick to qualify that she informed TV5 of her personal plans way ahead of her pregnancy. But she admits that she is still saddened by her temporary departure from the show that has meant so much to her for the last two years of its well-received run.
“It’s never easy leaving something that has become a big part of your life, even if only temporarily,” she lamented. “But at the same time, I’m glad that the show is in good hands as I believe Gelli is more than up to the challenges.”
And by challenges, Amy may be referring to all the slapping, hair-pulling, chair-throwing, and exchanging of profanities between the disputing parties who can’t settle their differences on their respective barangays.
“Being a referee on the show is no easy task,” Amy admitted. “It requires patience, a deep understanding of everyday people and genuine care to resolve their conflict.”
Gelli agrees. “Actually, I thought a lot about that before I accepted this,” she confessed. “But in the end, I think it’s something I can handle. Carry na rin.”
Even as she is no slouch when it comes to hosting, Gelli still has big shoes to fill. Amy is such a steadying presence on “Face To Face” that in addition to keeping the peace between the protagonists, she also balances the so-called “sawsaweros” and “sawsaweras” (the partisan studio audience) even as she deftly solicits the opinions of the show’s Trio Tagapayos who provide the spiritual, psychological and legal advice on the show.
With regards to her own legal matters, Amy said that with the denial of her annulment, she is just waiting for the passing of the divorce bill in the country.
“Ang nangyari po kasi talaga, eh, na-technical kami sa lower court, hanggang sa na-appeal siya several times sa higher courts pero na-deny pa rin,” she revealed.
“So right now, ipinapahanap ko po talaga si Brix kasi I heard he’s abroad so if he’s there at nakapag-asawa na siya ng iba, most likely, citizen na rin siya. I just need the divorce papers because we’re now at a point na it’s either siya o ako ang magpalit ng citizenship para isa sa amin makapag-divorce sa kung sino.”
And if the divorce bill does become law here in the Philippines?
“Siguro ako ang unang taong magiging masayang-masaya. Baka ako magpapiyesta ng ilang barangay at lahat ng mahihirap na hindi ma-afford ang annulment sasagutin ko para maging masaya na rin sila sa buhay,” she declared.
