WASHINGTON D.C. – A Filipina filed a complaint before the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against a Maryland furniture store for allegedly failing to stop two co-workers from tormenting her.
Marissa Drury-Jenkins said they called her “Clarita” and later found out why.
“All Claritas are prostitutes in the Philippines. The only reason they come here in America they are all brought by GI services men from the military. You are a whore. You are a Filipino whore,” Jenkins said, quoting her co-workers.
Jenkins said she sold $60,000 worth of furniture in just one month but was singled out by co-workers because she's Filipino.
“I know where your husband pick you up, nakakahiya yun ang sabi niya I know where your husband met you sabi niya in the whorehouse in the Philippines sa harapan ng customer,” said Jenkins.
Jenkins claims that when she tried to take her grievance to management, she was ignored.
Lawyer Arnedo Valera of the Migrant Heritage Commission said the store's inaction bred a hostile work environment for Jenkins.
“Ang mahalaga dito hindi lang yung si Marissa ma-compensate financially kundi ma-rectify itong mga ganitong practices just like any other discrimination case na magkaroon ng reorientation ang employer and at the same time turuan yung mga employees nila dun na ano ba yung mga red flags of discrimination na dapat maiwasan,” said Valera.
After her tormentors heard about the complaint, Jenkins says they even threatened her. .
A Maryland Charles County District Court was convinced the danger was real and issued a protective order for Jenkins.
