Woman apologizes after racist rant against Pinay goes viral

A woman from Beaverton, Oregon has apologized after her racist rant against a Filipina in Portland was posted on Facebook and viewed millions of times.

Filipina Selina Cairel of Vancouver, Washington posted the video to her Facebook page on September 12, showing Sierra Measelle and her friend at a parking lot.

The September 11 incident began when Measelle insinuated that Cairel could not drive because she’s Asian, followed by more insults.

In her post, Cairel said, “I want to make sure she gets seen and her racist, ignorant behavior is exposed.”

The video was viewed more than 2.5 million times, and netizens soon identified her.

Measelle, who is reportedly of Native American descent, apologized in an Instagram post for her “ignorant and hateful comments,” and said she plans to turn “this negative situation into a positive learning experience.”

Cairel said she will eventually forgive Measelle.

Pinay nursing student shot in the spinal cord in Toronto shooting

TORONTO – A 31-year-old nursing student is one of the 15 victims of the mass shooting in Toronto last July 22.

Danielle Kane, or “Dani,” was dining out with her boyfriend Jerry Pinksen to celebrate a birthday at 7Numbers restaurant on Danforth Avenue, when they heard shots fired.

Pinksen, who is an ER nurse himself, rushed outside to help when they heard a woman had been injured.

Little did he know that Kane followed.

According to Pinksen, Kane was shot just as she was coming outside to help. The bullet hit her spinal cord and punctured her stomach and diaphragm.

Kane’s cousin, Byron Abalos, said she is stable but still in critical condition.

“She’s still at the ICU at St. Mike’s Hospital. On Friday, she had her fourth surgery. She’s heavily sedated right now, in a lot of pain and it’s been tough. But every day she’s getting stronger and they’re hoping that sometime in the coming week, she’ll be able to talk,” said Abalos.

The gunman, 29-year-old Faisal Hussain, opened fire into several restaurants and businesses on the busy Toronto street.

Hussain then exchanged gunfire with police officers before fatally shooting himself in the head, according to a police source.

Following his shooting rampage, Hussain’s family released a statement saying he suffered from mental health problems for much of his life.

Police are investigating where he might have obtained his weapon.

While investigation is underway, Toronto is mourning and many are still shocked by the incident.

The #DaniStrong GoFundMe page has been receiving an outpour of support.

The crowdfunding was launched to help cover the costs of her recovery, to find new housing to accommodate her condition, and months if not years of rehabilitation and specialized care.

“People donate $5, people are donating $1,000 and so many people are sharing her story and leaving messages of support and that means so much to us, our family, her partner. It’s really giving us the strength and a purpose to keep going and making sure that we can give Danielle the fullest life possible and that she returns to her old self,” said Abalos.

Reese Fallon, 18, of Toronto, and Julianna Kozis, 10, of Markham both died while 13 others were wounded in the mass shooting.

Pinay dies in collision after marking 10th year in US

A 21-year old Filipina was killed by a suspected drunk driver Sunday night, after celebrating her 10th anniversary of immigrating to America with her family.

Reports say Sonoma State University student Paulette Quiba was killed in a head-on collision while on her way home to Rohnert Park.

The crash happened 45 minutes after Quiba said goodbye to her family at a Concord restaurant where they were celebrating.

California Highway Patrol officers arrested 35-year old Santa Rosa man Logologoa Taumaloto Tevaseu on suspicion of murder and two drunk driving charges.

Tevasue had a previous drunk driving conviction in 2012.

Three other people were hurt in the collision that killed Quibo. They were taken to a nearby hospital with minor and moderate injuries.

Kirsten Dunst 'moved' by Jaclyn Jose's Cannes speech

MANILA - Jaclyn Jose, the first Filipina to win Best Actress at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for her role in "Ma 'Rosa," shared a conversation she had with Kirsten Dunst, saying the Hollwood star was moved by her acceptance speech.

Jose met Dunst, a member of the jury for this year's film festival, during the closing ceremony held last May 22. Jose beat out the likes of Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Isabelle Hupert and Marion Cotillard for the acting honor.

"Sabi ni Kirsten sa akin, she was touched because she thought it was a beautiful speech and that [I grabbed the hand of my daughter]," said Jose, who added that Dunst became teary-eyed during their talk.

Jose delivered her speech while accompanied by "Ma 'Rosa" director Brillante Mendoza and daughter Andi Eigenmann, who is also part of the cast of the drama film.

According to Jose, it was "instinct" that made her pull her 25-year-old daughter with the late Filipino actor Mark Gil onstage and introduce her to the audience.

"Ako naman, I go by my instinct, that's how I felt," Jose explained. "Iyon din naman ang mararamdaman nang tao, hindi naman natin puwedeng i-dictate iyan eh."

In her acceptance speech, Jose said: "I'm at a loss for words! I am so surprised and moved. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the jury members."

"I thank Brillante Mendoza, whose instructions I simply followed. He's a brilliant director. I am so happy you liked the film. I'd like to salute the Philippine people," she added.

Pinay makes it to 'The Voice US' blind auditions

MANILA – A Filipina singer has made it through the blind auditions of the ninth season of “The Voice” in the United States.

The audition of 26-year-old Amy Vachal, who is based in Brooklyn, New York, was aired on Monday (Tuesday in Manila). She performed the classic “Dream A Little Dream of Me.”

Although only three out of four coaches turned for her -- Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams -- even Adam Levine agreed that Vachal is an exceptional talent.

“My team is full. Otherwise, I would have turned around first because not only am I sad that I didn’t get to turn around for you but you could win this whole thing,” Levine said.

Shelton even compared Vachal to Norah Jones and Colbie Caillat. “Thank you for bringing what you do in our show. I’m so impressed,” he said.

As for Stefani, she vowed to help Vachal in her journey on “The Voice” should she choose to join her team.

Williams, for his part, said Vachal could pick any team but he “would be unbelievably appreciative to have the opportunity to aid you in this journey.”

Eventually, Vachal decided to join Team Pharrell. On Facebook, she shared how honored she feels now that Williams is now her coach.

According to reports from Cebu media, Vachall is the niece of Cebu Representative Gwendolyn Garcia.

Filipina hurt in Bangkok blast, says DFA

MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has confirmed that a Filipina was among those injured in the blast in Bangkok Monday.

The unnamed victim sustained injury to her hearing due to the blast.

She is reportedly working with a foreign family in Thailand. She will be returning to the Philippines. DFA said the victim has requested that her identity be not revealed.

DFA earlier condemned the blast, saying the explosion had the "intention to sow terror."

"The Philippines stands in solidarity with the government and people of Thailand at this trying moment," DFA earlier said in a statement.

On Monday night, a blast rocked The Erawan shrine, which sits at the foot of the five-star Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel. The site is surrounded by a string of other large hotels and malls that draw tens of thousands of visitors each day.

The death toll from a bomb blast in the Thai capital rose to 21 on Tuesday with 123 wounded, police said, with seven tourists from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore among those killed in the attack.

Of the wounded, Thais made up the largest number with 42 being treated, followed by 28 Chinese. Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Oman, the Philippines and Singapore all had one or more nationals wounded, according to the list.

Authorities had said earlier that the blast killed a Filipino citizen but there was no mention of that person on the revised list. DFA is still verifying such reports.

On Tuesday, a new explosion rocked another tourist destination in Bangkok, barely a day after the first blast claimed many lives.

Thai media reported that the blast happened at Thaksin pier. The area is being used by tourists who take river boats to various destinations along the Chao Phraya River.

There are so far no reports of casualties in the new explosion. Unlike the first blast on Monday, the second explosion did not cause much damage.

Daquis thrilled at 'positive feedback' to FHM cover

MANILA, Philippines – Filipina volleyball star Rachelle Anne Daquis was delighted to receive positive feedback and good reviews after she made her debut appearance on the cover of local men's magazine, FHM Philippines.

Daquis, a UAAP champion with Far Eastern University (FEU), finally agreed to appear on the cover of FHM, and made her debut on the magazine's October 2014 issue.

"Matagal na akong inaawitan ng FHM, nag-yes ako (ngayon) kasi maganda 'yung naging usapan namin," Daquis revealed. "They were very flexible sa kung ano 'yung gusto ko. Kumbaga, kung ano 'yung peg na gusto ko, nasunod, kaya pumayag ago."

Daquis reported that she has received positive reactions to her FHM cover, which sees her posing in a two-piece bikini while clutching a volleyball.

"Natutuwa ako kasi lahat ng feedback, positive," she said. "Walang malicious na nasasabi. Lahat positive, and good comments."

Daquis made it clear that she wanted to show off primarily her "sporty" side in the FHM cover – and not just her "sexy" side.

"Doon sa result ng shoot, hindi siya malicious, kumbaga sporty talaga siya," Daquis said. "Hindi din naman ako papayag na iba 'yung peg para sa akin, kasi hindi naman 'yun ang personality ko."

"Ang personality ko, siyempre sporty, siyempre conservative. Kumbaga, naging sexy-sporty lang," she added.

Daquis is also hopeful that she can inspire people to leave a healthier and more active lifestyle.

"Pinakita ko lang kung ano ang naa-achieve ng isang tao na naka-ano sa sports, kumbaga, nagiging fit," she said. "Gusto ko ring maka-inspire ng mga tao na pumasok sa sports para ma-achieve 'yung ganoon na katawaan, na healthy."

After her collegiate career, Daquis won championships in the Shakey's V-League and in the Philippine Super Liga. She was the Most Valuable Player in the recent V-League Season 11 Open Conference.

How Pinay found success making furniture

MANILA, Philippines – Starting from the ground up, furniture-maker Anita Taruc built on her success through a combination of hard work and prayers.

Taruc, the owner of St. Louis Furniture in Bulacan, grew up poor in Pampanga but took inspiration from her carpenter father.

She said despite not having enough money, her father was able to support her and her siblings.

“Mayroon siyang dalang isda, siya pa ang magluluto. Nakahiga kami sa isang kulambo para kaming mga biik. Pagkatapos ay gigisingin niya kami at papakainin niya kami,” she told “My Puhunan.”

However, there was one thing her father could not provide for them: education.

Taruc said she knew then that going to school will help her find success later in life, and she strove to support herself so she could finish college.

“Sinabihan ko ‘yung tatay ko na kahit wala akong baon, kahit maglakad lang ako papunta at pauwi. ‘Yung mga kapitbahay namin, pinag-iigib ko noon, P2, P5, masaya na ko doon kasi kahit papano may baon ako,” she said.

After graduating, Taruc helped her father in carpentry instead of looking for a job.

Time came when Taruc had to leave her home and start her own family, and eventually, her own business.

She opened up a furniture shop in Bulacan with her husband, but bad luck struck their business which forced them to shut it down.

“May tumawag sa amin na nasusunog ‘yung pwesto namin. Ngayon, parang katapusan na ng mundo ng mister ko kasi hindi siya sanay na ang naipundar mo ay biglang mawawala,” she said.

While Taruc struggled to recover from the losses, her husband worked in Italy.

Through a loan of P5,000, Taruc re-opened the furniture shop and found success making hand-crafted furniture.

Taruc’s husband returned to the Philippines and focused on St. Louis Furniture, which now supplies furniture to a number of mansions, restaurants, and hotels in the country.

Taruc’s creations are also being used in the newly-built Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

“Sinasabi nga nila, nasa tao ang gawa, nasa Diyos ang awa. Kailangan kumilos ka, huwag ka dumepende. Dumiskarte ka, kayanin mo kahit hindi mo kaya kailangan katabi mo si Lord,” she said.

Mutya Datul: Reigning supreme

From simple probinsyana...

Mutya has a very classic take on the Filipina: conservative, simple, family-oriented. Her weekdays were spent shuttling between home and school in her hometown of Sta. Maria, Isabela. Weekends were reserved for relaxing at home, playing in the fields, or spending time with her friends.

The third of six siblings, she has high regard for her family and looks out for their well-being. She took on several modeling stints which enabled her to augment her family’s meager income.

This 20-year old is no stranger to beauty pageants. In fact, Mutya has joined quite a number of them even before winning her current title as Miss Supranational 2013.

However, not all of them resulted in a win.

“It was always my ambition to become a beauty queen, to become an inspiration to others. The first time I set foot in the pageant, I was nervous because I felt that the others were better than I was. I was shy and would hesitate to express myself. Since I grew up in the province, I spoke a different dialect which had an effect on my communication skills.”

It may not have been easy, but Mutya stayed focused on her goal. With renewed determination, she kept trying and fighting. Instead of giving up on her dream, she went hard at work, rigorously training to be the best she could be. She honed her communication skills and became more confident about herself.

“I always strive to maintain a positive outlook in life. I believe I can succeed and I don’t give up on anything. Though I experienced losses, I did not let those setbacks stop me from reaching for my dream. With determination and persistence, I worked hard to achieve my goals.”

To world-class role model

Being a beauty queen is no walk in the park.

“Yes, it is fun,” she admits, “but there is also a lot of hard work and sacrifice involved. In a way, it is like a normal job. It comes with its own set of problems and responsibilities. For instance, I always have to keep in mind that others look up to me. I have to be very conscious of my words and actions, mindful that I have to set a good example for them.”

A beyond beautiful Filipina, she believes, is beautiful inside and out. “Inner beauty is what matters most. However, it does not mean that you should not take care of how you dress and look. I also have to work at maintaining myself. Being presentable boosts your self-esteem.”

Having always taken care of how she looks, especially her long, shiny hair, Mutya’s beauty has definitely taken her to places she had only dreamed of. “Winning the crown gave me a lot
of opportunities. It allowed me to meet many interesting people. I am able to represent our country. I am also able to engage in charity work and other worthwhile causes.”

The crown and sash is not the be-all and end-all for this lady. She sees it as one of her major stepping stones towards higher dreams. “Filipinas are not afraid to tackle life’s challenges. After my reign, maybe I’ll try my hand at show business.”

Things can only get better for Mutya, and she will definitely dazzle everyone as she continues to rise above the rest.

The first Asian and Filipina to bag the Miss Supranational title, Mutya believes that there are no limits to what one can achieve.

“Life is wonderful if you know how to live it. Believe in yourself and don’t let others pull you down. Kung ako na simpleng probinsyana, nakayanan ko itong gawin, kaya rin ito ng iba.”

Miss International bet eyes pageant grand slam for PH

MANILA -- Bea Rose Santiago, the Philippines' candidate to Miss International, is eyeing to close the country's succesful year in pageants with a grand slam.

The Masbate-born beauty will leave for Tokyo, Japan on Friday in time for the kick-off of the 53rd Miss International pageant, which will hold its coronation night on December 17.

"I want to represent our country very well," Santiago said during a send-off event held Wednesday noon by Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc., the local licensee of the international competition.

"I want to give a merry Christmas to the Philippines. I want to close the pageant this year with a slam," said Santiago, who was earlier accompanied on stage by her fellow candidates in the Binibining Pilipinas 2013 pageant.

Dubbed the "Gold" batch of beauty queens -- the national competition celebrated its 50th anniversary this year -- the group has produced back-to-back successes for the Philippines in pageants.

Mutya Datul won Miss Supranational in Belarus in September, Cindy Miranda finished in the Top 10 of Miss Tourism Queen International in China in October, and Ariella Arida placed 3rd runner-up in Miss Universe last month.

Megan Young, who is not part of this Binibining Pilipinas batch, was also recently crowned Miss World in Indonesia.

Santiago, with the Miss International finals night set only a week before Christmas, will represent the Philippines in the last major international pageant this year.

Asked if she thinks the country has "saved the best for last," a confident Santiago said, "I hope so."

"I'm going to give my best. I want to give honor to us, and especially to my girls," she added, referring to her fellow beauty queens. "They've inspired me."

"I'm very, very happy to represent our country for Miss International. I leave it all to God. I pray every night," she said. "Kung kaya ko, I will give my best. I'm going there not as Bea Santiago, 20, from Masbate. I'm going there as Bea Santiago, Philippines!"

As with Arida's Miss Universe bid in November, Santiago said she will dedicate her stint in Tokyo to the Filipinos who were badly affected by super typhoon "Yolanda," one of the deadliest natural disasters to hit the Philippines.

"For me, what they need the most now is probably happiness," she said. "And if I win, if I make it, that will bring happiness to them, to make them more proud and happy this Christmas."

"Iyon ang gusto kong ipakita sa mga tao -- na the Philippines, no matter what happens to us, kahit na bagyo man tayo... I'm going to bring the storm in Japan, that's what I'm going to do," she said.

Meet the other Pinay in Miss Universe

MANILA -- Ariella Arida, the Philippines' representative to Miss Universe, is competing with another full-blooded Pinay in her bid to bring home the country's third crown from the international pageant.

Riza Santos, who is representing Canada in the 62nd Miss Universe, may be familiar to some Filipino TV viewers, as she finished second place in the top-rating reality TV show "Pinoy Big Brother" in 2007.

Following her stint on the ABS-CBN program, the 27-year-old model went full-time in showbiz, with appearances on several Kapamilya programs, including the concert variety show "ASAP," and TV series like "Palos" and "I Love Betty La Fea."

Her time as an actress in the Philippines is even mentioned in her profile on the official Miss Universe website: "Riza has acted in four major Filipino films, including the box office hit 'Dobol Trobol,' where she played the leading lady and was trained in knife throwing."

Although born and raised in Canada, Santos is pure Filipino. Her father, Ruel Santos, is from Bulacan; while her mother, Dina Buenaventura, hails from Bataan.

Connecting with Pinoys

Before the Miss Universe kick-off late last month, Santos, along with her mom, even organized a charity event for an ailing Filipino girl's operation.

Held in Calgary, Santos' hometown in Canada, the event aimed to raise funds for 15-year-old Maria Fe, who is suffering from a life-threatening scoliosis.

Santos learned of the girl's condition through her aunt, Delia Tumak, who is based in Vancounver.

Among the attendees of the event was Philippine Ambassador to Canada, Leslie Gatan, who referred to the gathering as a "bayanihan among all Filipinos."

"Believe in yourself and to become the best that you can be," Santos said at the time, referring to the theme of the fund-raising activity.

"Once you do that, you really have the ability to become the best that you are and it gives you more opportunity, affords you more resources that you can help other people, people like Maria Fe who really does need our support," she said.

Meeting Ariella

Along with the 85 other candidates of Miss Universe, Santos is currently in Moscow, Russia, where the coronation night will be held on November 10 (Manila time).

On her page on image-sharing service Instagram, Santos posted a photo of her with Arida, who she said is her roommate.

In an earlier post by Arida also on Instagram, the Alaminos-born beauty shared a photo of her with Santos and Guam's Alixes Scott, captioned: "Mabuhay ang Pinay!"

It is unclear whether Scott also has Filipino roots.

Another candidate, Gabon's Jennifer Mouchita, was earlier reported to be half-Filipina. While Mouchita has said she has "origins" in the Philippines, she clarified in a Twitter post that her parents are both Gabonese.

Arida is hoping to surpass the successes of her last three predecessors in Miss Universe – Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup and Janine Tugonon – who all finished in the international pageant's Top 5.

Should Arida be named Miss Universe 2013, she will be third Filipino to win the crown after Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973.

How Pinay ex-house helper became a millionaire

MANILA, Philippines – A former house helper in London who used to get a monthly salary of P7,000 is now earning millions from her cosmetics and soap laboratory in San Pablo, Laguna.

On ABS-CBN’s “My Puhunan”, Dina Dela Paz-Stalder said she started out with almost no capital at all, only relying on her doctor friends to supply her with beauty and cosmetic products to produce and sell.

From there, Stalder saw potential in the venture, highlighting that she immediately found passion in selling make up, soaps, and other beauty products.

“Siguro ito ‘yung trabaho na minahal ko at isina-puso ko. This is the kind of business or job that I really want,” she said.

Working overseas

Stalder, who was born and raised in Laguna, recalled how she struggled to finish school because of financial issues.

“Walang baon, minsan walang shoes. Pero maganda din ang kinalabasan kasi out of that, doon ako naging inspirado na magtapos,” she said.

She earned a degree on medical technology, but will not practice it until years later.

While employed as a domestic helper in London, she also studied facial skin care procedures.

She decided to return to the Philippines in 1986, but did not have any money to put up her own business.

But what she lacked in finance, she made up for in passion.

“’Yun ang dapat gawing inspirasyon ng mga kasambahay na kagaya ko before kasi hindi habang panahon kasambahay ka,” she said.

Stalder Laboratories

From mixing a small pot to make beauty products, Stalder is now running Stalder Laboratories in her hometown of San Pedro.

The name came from her husband, Christopher Stalder, a Swiss foreigner she met through her brother. Unlike other overseas Filipina workers, however, Stalder said she did not meet her partner abroad.

“Ang kaibahan lang, dito siya ipinanganak, dito siya nag-aral. Nag-meet lang kami because of my brother, hindi siya ‘yung talagang ‘rich, Swiss guy,’” she said.

The lab, which opened in 1999, is currently earning P20 million to P30 million a month and is one of the biggest skin care manufacturing companies in the country.

Aside from producing 25,000 papaya soaps daily, the lab also manufactures shampoo, hand sanitizer, lotion and other beauty products.

Stalder shared that a 30-milliliter bottle of hand sanitizer that cost P15 to make can sell for P40 to P45.

She attributed her success to the passion she put in the work, saying she herself gives importance to beauty and health.

“Dati kasi overweight ako ng 25 pounds, with my height parang nakaka-insecure when you see people around na healthy and sexy,” she said.

“Dapat magkaroon ng kaunting kaalaman sa gusto nilang buksan na negosyo, hindi ‘yung basta basta ka magbubukas,” she added.

Stalder also opened the facial and skincare clinic Diana Stalder, with branches in Metro Manila, Luzon provinces and Visayas.

Paying it forward

For all her successes, Stalder has remained grounded and always eager to share her blessings.

Stalder helped a headband vendor, Cristeta Sarenio, increase her daily income by supplying her with hand sanitizers and soaps to sell.

She also taught Sarenio how to manufacture hand sanitizers using ingredients that can be purchased from a drugstore.

Sharon Stone sues Filipina nanny over unpaid loan

LOS ANGELES - Sharon Stone has counter-sued her Filipina former nanny, who is pursuing the US actress for wrongful dismissal and harassment including racist abuse, new court documents show.

In a breach-of-loan-agreement action filed in Los Angeles Superior Court this week, the "Basic Instinct" star says Erlinda Elemen owes $9,500 of a $12,500 loan she made to her in 2010.

Elemen, who worked as a live-in nanny for Stone until she was sacked in 2011, repaid $3,000 between August 2010 and January 2011, but then stopped repayments to the 55-year-old actress.

Her lawyers announced last year that she was suing the actress. A judge has ruled that the former nanny had provided enough evidence to support her charges of harassment, failure to prevent harassment, retaliation and wrongful dismissal.

Stone's lawyers sought to have the case -- which has a tentative trial date of July 30 -- dismissed, arguing that comments by the actress did not amount to harassment.

"All we have is that Ms Stone made comments about Filipino food, Filipino accents," said lawyer Daniel Gutenplan.

When the lawsuit was announced in May, the actress's publicist slammed the legal action as "absurd," claiming the ex-nanny was simply trying to "cash in" on Stone.

The lawsuit claimed the star equated being Filipino with being stupid, and ordered her not to speak in front of her children so they would not "talk like you."

Stone also banned Elemen from reading the Bible in the actress's home, even though the live-in nanny looked after the actress's three children and frequently traveled with them.

Elemen, who was hired in October 2006 and was promoted to head live-in nanny two years later, was dismissed in February 2011, after Stone learned she was paid overtime when traveling with the children and on holidays.

In 2011, the actress was ordered to pay $232,000 in compensation to a worker who injured his knee after slipping and falling in her backyard in 2006.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -  Filipina nurse Menchu Sanchez will get a rare vantage view of President Obama’s State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday evening (Wednesday morning, Manila time).

Sanchez, a nurse at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, will sit at the balcony as one of the special guests of First Lady Michelle Obama.

She is being hailed as one of the heroes of the Hurricane Sandy disaster that devastated large parts of New York and New Jersey last year.

She devised a plan to transport 20 at-risk infants at the Langone Medical Center to intensive care units around the city.  She organized the nurses and doctors to carefully carry the babies down eight flights of stairs with only cell phones to light the way.

Even as Menchu’s own home was flooding, she thought only of protecting the babies in her care, the White House said.

Menchu was born, raised, and educated in the Philippines and she immigrated to the United States in the 1980s.

She has worked as a nurse in New York for more than 25 years, and has been at NYU since 2010.

Menchu currently lives in New Jersey with her husband and two children, both of whom are in college.

The other guests of the First Lady include Alan Aleman, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico City.

In high school, Alan watched his friends come of age – driving around town with their new licenses and earning some extra cash from their summer jobs at the mall, knowing that his status prevented him from those activities.

But when he heard about news that the Obama Administration was going to provide Deferred Action for undocumented youth like him to emerge from the shadows, he was one of the first to sign up, the White House said.

Alan is in his second year at the College of Southern Nevada.  He’s studying to become a doctor and he hopes to join the Air Force.  Alan is currently working at Hermandad Mexicana, where he is in charge of final review for DACA applications.

Also with the First Lady are Cleopatra and Nathaniel Pendleton, whose daughter Hadiya was murdered on January 29, 2013, when she was shot and killed in Harsh Park on Chicago’s South Side.

Hadiya had participated in President Obama’s public inaugural celebration on January 21, 2013.  The honor student and band majorette at King College Prep High School has become another symbol of the victims of gun violence in the country.

Mrs. Obama attended Hadiya’s memorial service last Saturday.

Meet Megaupload founder's pretty Filipina wife

MANILA, Philippines - Kim Dotcom, the controversial founder of file-sharing website Megaupload, over the weekend launched a new cyberlocker called Mega.co.nz with much publicity.

Dotcom, who is fighting extradition to the US on charges of internet piracy, says the new site allows users to control who can access uploaded files. This would mean that Mega would not have access to the files, which could strip them of any possible liability for enabling users to distribute pirated content.

Despite his legal problems, the multimillionaire has continued to be supported by his Filipina wife Mona. A Reuters photo showed Mona, wearing a red jacket and skirt, at the Mega launch at their mansion in Auckland, New Zealand on January 20.

The pretty Filipina is an ex-model who has been married to Dotcom for several years now.

On her Twitter account (@MonaDotcom), she tweeted about the Mega launch and her husband's birthday. "Happy Birthday to the BEST, most loving and sweet husband in the world!!! @KimDotcom So proud of you! I will always be your no.1 fan," she said.

Mona is also active on Instagram, where she posts photos of her family. One photo shows the Filipina with a white Birkin bag.

According to various news reports, Kim met Mona Verga in the Philippines in November 2007. They married in July 2009, a day after her 21st birthday They now have five children, including twin baby girls.

The Dotcom family lives in an estate just outside of Auckland, which was where Kim was arrested last year. New Zealand's elite special tactics forces arrived by helicopter on the mansion's grounds to arrest him on copyright charges.

During the raid, the police seized numerous items. The New Zealand Herald reported last May 2012 that Mona applied with the court for the return of her personal belongings, including a G55 Mercedes, Christian Colin sculptures, a Chanel diamond wristwatch and a Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch. She said these were gifts from her husband.

In a recent interview with Reuters, Kim admitted he and his wife still panic when they hear loud noises.

"Every time you hear a helicopter, you automatically think, 'Oh, another raid', so it's something that stays with you for a long time," he said.

Pinay DH nabbed, accused of rape in Dubai

MANILA, Philippines – A Filipina household service worker was arrested after her sponsor accused her of sexually abusing her children in Dubai.

The Gulf News reported that the OFW had been accused of having sex with the 8-year-old son of her sponsor. She was also accused of forcing the boy to have sex with his 12-year-old sister.

"There is such a report and it also appeared sa diario dito sa Dubai at yun nga, yung kababayan natin na isang kasambahay dito ay inakusahan ng kanyang sponsor ng rape doon sa mga anak niya na alaga ng kasambahay na ito," confirmed Philippine Consul General Frank Cimafranca.

Cimafranca told DZMM on Friday that an Assistant To Nationals (ATN) officer was able to visit the OFW who is currently in a detention center.

“Of course, itinatanggi niya yung akusasyon dahil kung isipin mo naman ay napakamurang edad yung mga bata---8 years old at yung isa 12 years old--parang di kapani-paniwala yung akusasyon,” Cimafranca said.

However, he added that the consulate could not do anything at this point as the case is still being investigated.

"Wala pa tayong masyadong magawa dahil the case is still under investigation at pag ang kaso ay under investigation ang patakaran dito sa bansang ito, sa UAE, ay hindi pwedeng makialam yung mga abugado at yung konsulado kasi iniimbistigahan pa ng pulis at ng prosecutorial office," he said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila had been informed of the case and is ready to provide legal assistance once the case against the Pinay is filed in court.

Based on their records, the Pinay was deployed to Dubai in May 2011. She ranaway from her sponsor four months later.

“May previous case itong katulong na ito na ikinomplain niya yung kanyang sponsor. Nag runaway last year, inayos ng agency at saka yung sponsor at voluntary din naman daw na bumalik doon sa sponsor itong kasambahay na ito,” he said.

The OFW's recruitment agency in Dubai has been suspended and is also a subject of their investigation.
