Daniel Padilla declines D-League spot
MANILA – Teenage heartthrob Daniel Padilla has given up the spot in the AMA Titans after the team drafted him to play in the PBA D-League.
The Titans selected the actor in the 15th and last round of the 2014 PBA D-League draft last Monday. Padilla initially denied being drafted to the D-League.
The 19-year-old later said he has pulled out of the AMA Titans, adding he cannot attend practices due to his hectic showbiz schedule.
“Hindi na talaga kakayanin ng schedule ko. Kaya naglalaro ako, hobby na lang. Pero 'yung talagang ensayo … wala, hindi ko na kakayanin,” he said in a report by Spin.ph’s Snow Badua.
He also feels the spot should go to more deserving players.
“Hindi naman ako para sa basketball. Mas marami talagang players na dapat maglaro. Hindi naman tulad ko na pinasok lang,” said Padilla.
Although he loves the sport, Padilla said it would be better if he earns his place in the PBA D-League.
“Hindi ko naramdaman na kaya ako napasok dahil magaling ako. Ayaw ko...hindi ko pinag-trabahuhan eh,” Padilla said. “Parang pinasok lang ako sa team dahil artista ako.”
PBA D-League tournament director Eric Castro earlier told reporters that Padilla is eligible to play for the AMA Titans since he is enrolled in the school.
Castro, however, admitted that Padilla was not part of the 153 players who applied for the draft.
" AMA invoked its right as a school-based team to sign a player who is enrolled in its school even though he didn't apply for the draft," Castro said.
