LOS ANGELES — A US man is facing bigamy charges after Facebook suggested to his estranged wife that she should “friend” her husband’s new spouse, a report said Saturday.
Alan O’Neil — original name Alan Fulk — is due in court in Pierce County, Washington state on March 22 because his ex-partner discovered via the social network that the accused had changed his name and was living a double life.
Fulk married his first wife in 2001 but moved out eight years later, though neither filed for divorce.
In December he changed his name to O’Neill and later that month married his second wife, according to charging documents cited by the News Tribune newspaper in Tacoma, in the northwestern US state.
Pierce County prosecutor Mark Lindquist said his first wife discovered the new woman in her husband’s life when Facebook — thinking the pair might want to get to know each other — recommended her as a “friend.”
Clicking on the picture, the estranged wife saw her husband with his new partner, dressed in smart clothes, next to a wedding cake. She then called her husband’s mother.
“An hour later the defendant (O’Neil) arrived at (Wife No. 1′s) apartment, and she asked him several times if they were divorced,” court records state. “The defendant said, ‘No, we are still married’,” said the documents.
O’Neill asked her to keep quiet about his new wife, but she alerted the authorities.
“It’s not the crime of the century, but it is a crime,” Lindquist told the newspaper. Requests for details were not immediately answered by the prosecutor’s office.
